April:
Sega holds an internal contest to come up with a unique character that will demonstrate the power of their 16-bit Mega Drive console and potentially
be the company's future mascot. The submissions range from rabbits to bulldogs to spiky-haired men in overalls, but are ultimately narrowed down to
an armadillo and a hedgehog. Sega decides on the hedgehog due to its "spiky" nature, and a 15-man team in Sega Consumer Department #3 (AM8) begins
development on Sonic the Hedgehog. The group dub themselves the "Sonic Team."
November 7 - February 15:
Dreams Come True, a popular Japanese band, begins their Sega-sponsored Wonder 3 concert tour. Sonic is painted on the side of the tour trailer, and
pamphlets advertising the game are handed out (even before media coverage). The text on the flyer reads: "Kawaii yatsu ni wa, toge ga aru," which is
a bit of a pun. The literal translation is: "for a cute guy, he has spines," but the Japanese word for spine, toge, can also mean "harsh
words." Masato Nakamura of Dreams Come True would be composing the music for Sonic, hence the tie-in.
