It can display up to 720p. That is HD enough for me.

I mean, it doesn't seem to add any additional buttons or functionality whatsoever. How is it any different than just using the remote and nunchuk on their own, aside from forcing you to hold them in a particular postion? Couldn't you just play Umbrella Chronicles just as effectively (and probably more comfortably) without the shell?
Ghost Squad.

I still don't understand what function the gun frame serves, even in Ghost Squad. I mean, does it do anything other than glue the remote and nunchuk together? Because otherwise it strikes me as about as useless as those attachments that make the remote look like a tennis racket or a golf club.

I've never played a Wii, but I imagine that the handle behind the trigger makes it feel more like you're holding a gun than a controller. The back piece looks annoying, but putting the nunchuk on it would be optional.

If you can't tell, Ghost Squad has the greatest light gun ever.

I found out that some PS2 games (namely Gran Turismo 4, Tourist Trophy and God of War II) can output 720p and 1080i signals, as well as a wide selection of the original XBOX games.
Since the Wii is, at the very least, an "overclocked GameCube", and it has the same high quality analog connections as the PS2 and XBOX, maybe some future games could output in those formats too (even though they may look like crap or have a low framerate)?

No, it is impossible for the Wii to output high-def. I'd provide a link or something but I forgot where I read it.

I'll take your word for it.
And I will admit I hate the wii but that wii gun looks really cool. Is it actually real?

What's so great about high-def, anyway? I just care about the games!

HD is like plastic surgery; you just know you look like shit without it. :P
No, seriously, it can be like comparing a NES to a Neo-Geo.

The difference is that HD is bigger.

Yeah. Ooo, wide screen and a higher number of pixels on-screen. How's that equate to more fun?

No one ever said that "having HD" makes a game more fun.
HD doesn't have anything to do with fun. Why do these two concepts have to be mixed, when they aren't related at all?

Lower your monitor resolution to 640x480 and have fun.

It was hard to tell the difference in resolution for me at first until I saw an old-fashioned TV and an HDTV at a Target playing the same ad side-to-side.
480p, not 720.
My bad. Could of sworn that the Wii menu had 720p as an option for screen resolution.

I recently got a nice HD tv and hooked some fancy cables to my PS2. The image is crispier, but it shows how much the PS2 lacks in resolution, specially in Shadow of the Colossus. Soulcalibur 3 looks just as it was meant to be though.

Because people are idiots and/or graphics whores.

Do you know if it's of the LCD or Plasma type?
I'll guess you're using these (or these, they work the same). If you can, try pressing L1+L2+L3+square+circle while booting up God of War II, and see what happens. Also try Ace Combat Zero, it may look great in that TV...
Oh, and did you try actually watching normal TV on it? Because many people say these TV sets don't display old signals properly, it would be a waste.

The only thing that bugs me about HD graphics is that so much of the system's resources are effectively being wasted making the game run at a resolution that only a minority of console owners (apparently) can even see, instead of being directed towards improvements that EVERYONE can see, like higher-poly models, more complex lighting and bump mapping, and smoother framerates.

But still, there's no arguing with the fact that HD looks much better than standard def. It's just an improvement that most people are not actually in a position to appreciate outside of looking at screenshots on their computers. As a PC gamer who has effectively been playing 'hi def' games for years, I have to admit I was kind of astonished that resolution of all things became the next penis contest in console graphics. "HD" is the new "32 bit".

I love how HD looks but it also hurts the hell out of my eyes. after about an hour of playing a video game I have to look away from the screen for a minute. Anybody else get that feeling?

Uhm, did you try to use it in a well-lit place and at least one and a half meters away from the screen? (that's what Annie-May say).
Esrever wrote:"HD" is the new "32 bit".
You mean, like, in the way that actual 3D were used for the first time in 32-bit systems? Yeah, it seems so... though, with games like those rendered using the Unreal Engine 3.0, it looks like we'll get games with better quality lighting and irregular surfaces soon enough, particularly with the PS3 and whatever it is that comes after the 360 (but I'm sure the latter hasn't showed it's full potential yet either).

I meant it more in the way that HD is a label, like "32 bit" once was, that inaccurately gets tossed around like it is synonymous with amazing graphics. I think a lot of people don't even understand what it actually technically is. They just know it's good, like "16 megs" was good or "blast processing" was good.

As for the zapper, this article from wired basically sums up exactly what my concern was:
