It can display up to 720p. That is HD enough for me.Segaholic2 wrote:The Wii can't output HD.

Ghost Squad.Esrever wrote:I've got to say, despite my cautious enthusiasm for the games it "supports", I can't for the life of me figure out what the point of the Zapper shell is. I mean, it doesn't seem to add any additional buttons or functionality whatsoever. How is it any different than just using the remote and nunchuk on their own, aside from forcing you to hold them in a particular postion? Couldn't you just play Umbrella Chronicles just as effectively (and probably more comfortably) without the shell?

I found out that some PS2 games (namely Gran Turismo 4, Tourist Trophy and God of War II) can output 720p and 1080i signals, as well as a wide selection of the original XBOX games.Shadow Hog wrote:480p, not 720.
Since the Wii is, at the very least, an "overclocked GameCube", and it has the same high quality analog connections as the PS2 and XBOX, maybe some future games could output in those formats too (even though they may look like crap or have a low framerate)?

Do you know if it's of the LCD or Plasma type?Opa-Opa wrote:I recently got a nice HD tv and hooked some fancy cables to my PS2. The image is crispier, but it shows how much the PS2 lacks in resolution, specially in Shadow of the Colossus. Soulcalibur 3 looks just as it was meant to be though.
I'll guess you're using these (or these, they work the same). If you can, try pressing L1+L2+L3+square+circle while booting up God of War II, and see what happens. Also try Ace Combat Zero, it may look great in that TV...
Oh, and did you try actually watching normal TV on it? Because many people say these TV sets don't display old signals properly, it would be a waste.

The only thing that bugs me about HD graphics is that so much of the system's resources are effectively being wasted making the game run at a resolution that only a minority of console owners (apparently) can even see, instead of being directed towards improvements that EVERYONE can see, like higher-poly models, more complex lighting and bump mapping, and smoother framerates.
But still, there's no arguing with the fact that HD looks much better than standard def. It's just an improvement that most people are not actually in a position to appreciate outside of looking at screenshots on their computers. As a PC gamer who has effectively been playing 'hi def' games for years, I have to admit I was kind of astonished that resolution of all things became the next penis contest in console graphics. "HD" is the new "32 bit".

Uhm, did you try to use it in a well-lit place and at least one and a half meters away from the screen? (that's what Annie-May say).
You mean, like, in the way that actual 3D were used for the first time in 32-bit systems? Yeah, it seems so... though, with games like those rendered using the Unreal Engine 3.0, it looks like we'll get games with better quality lighting and irregular surfaces soon enough, particularly with the PS3 and whatever it is that comes after the 360 (but I'm sure the latter hasn't showed it's full potential yet either).Esrever wrote:"HD" is the new "32 bit".

I meant it more in the way that HD is a label, like "32 bit" once was, that inaccurately gets tossed around like it is synonymous with amazing graphics. I think a lot of people don't even understand what it actually technically is. They just know it's good, like "16 megs" was good or "blast processing" was good.
As for the zapper, this article from wired basically sums up exactly what my concern was:
