Re: Sonic Unleashed?
Really? I always thought her stage BGMs (all 4 of them) had kind of a "70's-spy-movie" feel, a la James Bond - which character-wise, makes sense.
And I have yet to hear any of Sonic 2006's music. Just out of curiosity, are there any versions of "This World" without vocals?

On a not-so-related note, I've just discovered that my favourite tunes from the Genesis' version of Sonic 3D and most if not all of the recent titles weren't actually composed by Senoue (the ones I liked from 3D were composed by Tetsuyuki Maeda). As far as I'm concerned he can more or less go screw himself.
Cara, you can find some Sonic games' BGMs at Shadow of a Hedgehog.

The version composed for E3 2006 is on one of the discs, but it's short.Brazillian Cara wrote:And I have yet to hear any of Sonic 2006's music. Just out of curiosity, are there any versions of "This World" without vocals?

Cara, I don't know if it's the exact track that you want (or if you can rip it for that matter) but Super Smash Brothers Brawl has an instrumental version of His World. It does loop though, so that's something you'll want to keep in mind.

I'd still like a throwback to the Spring Yard Zone theme.

It's not caught-in-your-head-for-weeks catchy like Emerald Coast or Star Light Zone, but that's kind of what I was talking about how divergent it was from the usual Sonic soundtrack. Less about short bursts of powerpop, more about the mainstream process of texturing and creating sound beds that fit the profile of the level. And the Abandoned Mine tune comes through in spades in the way of doing that originally.

Re: Sonic Unleashed?
Just as an aside, I was listening to the Egg Dragoon fight this morning and was really reminded of what a great boss fight that was. Both on wii and 360. man. It's so frustrating because when sonic team does it right, sometimes they really do it right. The egg dragoon, mazuri, and the opening cutscene just to name a few. I might as well ask, was there any part of Unleashed that regardless of how you might feel about the game overall, really struck a chord within your soul?

Re: Sonic Unleashed?
I liked the Egg Dragoon a lot and the opening too. It annoyes me that the Dark Gaia stuff was over half the game; I would have liked all the Robotnik stuff like that. There was really only one other boss with him too; the other two were just rehashes of the first one (and progressively worse).
While the African boss was alright, I did not like the cutscenes they used; really shitty and reminded me too much of Pixar/Sonic X. That little robot he had was just stupid, but at least the bigger ones were better. They seemed more like the robots from the OVA and are much better than Egg Pawns.
In concept, I would have liked the Sky Chase Zones a lot, but the dialogue was really poor and the QTE ruined it. Why does the plane need to turn into that faggy jet-like thing? I like it as a normal plane, as it was in Sonic Adventure (besides the boss part). Sky Chase should have been better a decade later... but at least the music was really good.
I also liked how the African stage music was a Sonic 1 song, and how they named the robots after Sonic debutes (would have preferred they be named after SEGA consoles; did not need one named after 360/Sonic 06).
The ending was good too once the Chip part passed. It was just like the older games.

Re: Sonic Unleashed?
Hmmm... Well, I suppose I really like the daytime Spagonia stage on the Wii version. The whole stage is ususally a lot of fun, has great flow, and with the bright visuals and perky music, it's really one of those Sonic stages that you just can't help but feel good whie playing. I also like the first half of daytime Eggmanland, at least visually. The grandoise theme park interlaced with relentless factories is somehow... very, very sad, and the whole environment really conveys Eggman's childish yet demented personality.
I'm not really a fan of the Werehog stages, but the Dark Gaia Phoenix battle was great, along with the Egg Dragoon. Along with Perfect Dark Gaia, those are the only boss battles that I remember enjoying.

Re: Sonic Unleashed?
Absolutely. I think this is one instance where the wii level actually outshines its HD counterpart for all the reasons you mentioned. The 360 version, while an amazing technical feat, is too busy and jumbled to be enjoyed at a comfortable pace. It also wasn't a great idea to break up a lot of the 360 levels with the same rehashed 'running away from the three flying robots with laser beam' segments.Wombatwarlord777 wrote:Hmmm... Is it a bad thing to be reminded of pixar while playing a sonic game? You're right about the repeated bosses though. Lame stuff.Kogen wrote: While the African boss was alright, I did not like the cutscenes they used; really shitty and reminded me too much of Pixar/Sonic X.

Yes, if they go too heavy on the slapstick.Radrappy wrote:Is it a bad thing to be reminded of pixar while playing a sonic game?
Eggmanland is both one of the stupidest massive chunks of Sonic level design ever and yet a pretty amazing thing. You must give them props for having the nuts to prove exactly how far the Hedgehog Engine can be pushed. The whole thing is like an RPG dungeon slog translated to Sonic mechanics; by the end it feels like you've plunged a long way down into a humongous lair. And it's a sight. Like Twinkle Park, Final Egg (especially Final Egg), and a bit of Casino Night all crashed into each other on an elevator and exploded.
Still. Get a load of this result. I died roughly 25 times on the way through, mostly due to brutally annoying Werehog level design. What a delightful pain in the ass.

Re: Sonic Unleashed?
I finally got to looking at the X-Box 360 / PS3 version of Eggmanland (from looking at YouTube, keep in mind). The Sonic portions of the stage look fun and exciting, and the Werehog portions of the stage... Well, they look like your typical Werehog fare. What I can't believe is that they stuck both together in the same gargantuan level! I mean, that has to be one of longest levels in the history of the franchise! While I can't be sure if I would have fun playing this version of Eggmanland*, I'm impressed how short the loading time is for a stage of this size (keeping in mind the dumbass loading times of Sonic '06). Clearly, at least from a technical standpoint, Sonic Team is improving their act.
*At least you don't have FIVE goddamned werehog stages...

Re: Sonic Unleashed?
I hate Pixar stuff, so yeah, it seems out of place to me. Plus I always pictured Sonic's world to have flickies and shite everywhere, not just happy people.
I really hate Eggmanland. The only worse levels are Adabat (day, due to lag) and the some of the secondary acts (they suck).
Like why not split that into a few acts to be normal about it? They could be continious, like the old games.

I liked how eggman land was the whole game in a nutshell. Pretty much just 2 mins of fun for every 20 mins of fucking lame and they repeat the process 3 times in the level.
I'm just glad I beat the games so now I can go back and only play the day stages.

I can understand where you're coming from Kogen, but I think the visual style of Sonic Unleashed was just right for the concept and the atmosphere in the game. Intuitively, its simply feels good for me. You know, it's similar to how the anime-esque look was just right for Sonic Adventure, and how the photorealistic look was entirely wrong for Sonic '06.Kogen

Yeah, you swamp donkey. Before it was an hour and eight minutes.
I do not hate the design they took, I just do not think it really fits a Sonic game too much. Sonic is supposed to be on islands and stuff, not just cities. Or how they describe the cities: "Empire City: Enter Village".

Although I am in agreement, it's still a hell of a lot better than the humans' depiction in games like SA2 and Shadow.Kogen wrote:Plus I always pictured Sonic's world to have flickies and shite everywhere, not just happy people.
