A simple question from a simple mind:

I bought some headphones. They were $80 bucks, so it's a halfway decent set. The idea was to have them replace my dinky speakers. But they sound way too low. Even at max volume, they're quiet like a kitten with laryngitis. I've tried with other headphones and the results are all the same. I even bought a separate headphone volume dial, but even going through those, they're still too quiet. I also plugged them in through my dinky speakers with its own volume dial, but same thing: still too low, even at max volume (and max volume is plenty loud when I play through the speakers directly).

Some games have in-game volume control, and when I adjust those settings, I can get good loudness. However, for games that don't have such settings (and even for a couple that do), it doesn't seem as though there's any way to get any reasonable volume.

So, like, what the hell?

What headphones did you get? For some higher-end ones it's recommended to "break in" your new set by blasting the loudest music you have at the loudest volume possible for about 24 hours.

I run everything through an entertainment center receiver. Basically a hub; takes input from the TV, the CD player, VDP (whatever that stands for, this thing was made in the 80's. I just have a jack for MP3 players/my laptop going in there), radio (built-in), etc. Switches for headphones and up to three pairs of speakers. It also works as an amplifier, and I've only ever needed to push the volume up to about 30% capacity. I've never set it to the maximum, but I assume I could make my neighbors deaf for life with it.

However, I've never had problems with headphones being too soft, so I'm just assuming you're hard of hearing now, you geezer you.

Since it's possible to get decent volume out of it, it's probably not a hardware problem...

From the "have you turned it off an back on" department: I suppose you've checked the Windows Control Panel's various volume settings? Some are often hidden. On Windows XP, double-click the volume icon to open up the Volume Control window. Click on the Options menu and select Properties. Make sure everything is checked in the "Show the following volume controls" box. Adjust them until you find the one that gives you reasonable loudness.

They're not plugged into my computer - going through my desktop or laptop the volume is fine, I have no problems - it's only too low when I try to play console games. I have the headphones plugged directly into the A/V jacks via a tiny adapter I think I stole from my dad about 10 years ago. I would blame the adapter, except I had the same problem even when I ran it directly through my existing speakers.

I thought maybe the console control panels would have some sort of volume control, but nay. I should also note that it sounds absolutely horrible with the Wii. It's still too quiet, but it also crackles like Rice Krispies every time there's a smidgen of bass. (I blame that on the Wii hardware, which is made for poor people - it sounds great with the 360 and PS3 when I can hear anything).

Also, it seems that the L and R are mislabelled...

Well you should have mentioned that, idiot. What size jack does the headphone use? 1/4" or 1/8"? And are you plugging it into an a/v receiver?

Nope, no receiver. It's just plugged straight into the red and white audio cables with that tiny adapter. I don't know what the adapter's called, but it's got the red and white audio inputs on one side then the 1/8" headphone input on the other.

Most TVs output at an incredibly low volume for the audio out jacks and expect the receiving speakers to amplify them as necessary, completley ignoring the volume control for anything but the internal speakers. Some fancier tvs will let you adjust the external volume but generally have enabling it buried somewhere in the menus so you could try digging in there / checking the TV manual. But considering you plugged them into external speakers and their volume control still didn't work I'm not so sure it's the cause, unless the speakers ignore amplifying the output to the headphone jack as well.

Get an audio receiver. You may as well get a good set of surround speakers too while you're at it. Then you won't even need the headphones.

Well, the whole reason I got them is because I'm about to move overseas and I need to pack light ("light" naturally still includes my PS3 and Wii and the 360 as well if I can fit it in my luggage). Also, with headphones I can still get good sound without upsetting all the strange people who inhabit the dwellings adjacent to mine. I guess I'll have to eventually invest in a receiver. Are they very large and/or expensive?

I was having a similar problem while on vacation last week with my PSP. I was trying to play FF Tactics and get decent sound. I bought two sets of headphones before I reluctantly plunk down for a $150 set of Bose headphones that I found at a Target. It made all the difference in the world. Now the volume was so loud, I couldn't even stand it at full volume.

Short of investing ia new headset, you might also want to try changing your Audio output on your consoles to "Mono" rather than Stereo and see if that makes them louder. It could be that you are really only getting mono sound through the adapter and so you are loosing sound due to being in Stereo channel mode.

I think the 360 also has a separate set of headset/mic options in your profile settings (on the side dash bar).

Have you tried running the sound to your TV and then using the Audio out with your Y adapter? If your TV is less than around 10 years old it should have some type of "audio out" and this would essentially enable you to use your TV as the ampilfier. You can turn the TV speakers off in the options, Then you should be able to adjust the headset volume with the TV volume settings.
