Viewtiful Dante

Post by Zeta »

I finally gave in today and bought a copy of Viewtiful Joe today at my local (read: 2 Hours away) Gamestop. I considered getting Mister Mosquito instead - but sucking the blood out of a strange Japanese family didn't seem that appealing. If only you could customize the family, ala' the Sims - and then suck away.

Anyways, back to Joe. Awesome graphics. Very funny. Cool system. Difficult as Hell. I'm having trouble in Kids mode. I feel embaressed. It's mostly the different modes that are giving me trouble. Sometimes it seems like you should speed up instead of slow down, and slow down instead of speed up. My brain is a little fried from the intense action, and the fact that I met someone who's apparently romatically interested in me today.

It's definately an interesting concept. And I gotta say - kudos to Capcom for not taking the easy way out when it comes to settings. Most videogames with a "movie" theme have the different genres as levels - Western, Sci-Fi, Horror, Jungle Adventure, Film Noir. Viewtiful Joe doens't do that. Though I guess VJ2 might.

Anyways, using special effects as gameplay features is a very cool idea. But as I said - it's a mixed bad. Fast-forward mode, for instance - is practically useless because Joe controls so wildly when you use it that I kept on getting killed.

It's basically the most unforgiving game I've ever played in my entire life. I shudder to think of how it will play on Adults mode, but I want to unlock Viewtiful Sylvia.

I suck at hardcore action games anyways. I was barely able to finish Devil May Cry on easy mode a few weeks ago. Mostly thanks to those Nobody monsters near the climax. Also, I was creeped out by the incredible oedepial overtomes in that game's storyline. Thank goodness they apparently got rid of Trish in DmC2 and DmC3. It was getting disturbing.

I like to think Trish left Devil Never Cry's employment after Dante started calling her Mom.

On a similar note - is anyone annoyed by how many appearences Dante is making outside his own games? He's a hidden character in VJ for the PS2. He's going to be in the next Shin Megami Tensen (Persona) game as a party member. I hope he doesn't pop up in Mario Party 7 or something. But I wouldn't be suprised to see him in the next Resident Evil.

Back to the original point of this post - anyone have any advice on VJ combat techniques?

Oddly enough, I remember reading a preview where you could be Dante in VJ2. Which is what I thought your topic was about, but it's not.

Which was the only GOOD thing about that damn game. Stupid ruination thing.

Yeah, I remember that too, Delph. There was some sort of confusion because they released the first screens/art of both VJ2 and VJ1ps2 at the same time. I think they just got mixed up about which game the drawing of Dante belonged to. IGN had the pick of Dante in it's VJ2 media section, and then a few hours later, it was gone.

Nah, I'm sure you can play as Dante in VJ on PS2.

It sucks. I got the Gamecube version all like "All right, I'm getting a badass game that's exlusive to my system", and then they bring it out on PS2 with better stuff. I bet it'll have the missing "Viewtiful World" video too. It's just like RE:Code Veronica all over again, dammit.

Still getting pwn3d on The Magnificent 5 on Adults. Arse.

Zoom In moves are your friend, specifically the Red Hot One-Hundred. (Zoom In and then hold down the punch button.) That's pretty much your most powerful move in the entire game, to the point where it can be considered OVERpowered. It chews through enemy health like tissue paper.

Mach Speed is only a necessary ability in certain situations, and typically I wouldn't use it against an enemy unless I was absolutely sure I could get in a few hits without taking one myself.

Oh yeah, buy just about everything you can from the shop, specifically stuff like the VFX Turbo Charger, Red-Hot Kick, and Viewtiful Forever.

And to j-man, last time I checked, the "Viewtiful World" video was in the Gamecube version.

Same here, and I think it works better when in SLOoooow.

I thought it was cut out of the European release.

Why do so many people start on kid's mode? They need to start doing that thing where you don't get the full ending unless you beat it on normal.

I think he means the "Music Video Version," the one that's in color. The one you see after the credits is the "Wherehouse Version."

I usually start a game on easy, lately I've been sticking with Normal however. I started VJ on Adult and gave up at the five bosses, Kids was a joke when I tried it.

Tips for not sucking, first of all use the little hazard signs and dodge appropriately. It screws up the enemy then you can beat them in style. You won't get Zoom in for a little while, but once you do you can slow zoom and punch to do incredible amounts of damage or slow zoom and kick for decent damge that hits all sides of you. Definately utilize the dodging though.

All moves do more damage with Slow on.

And yes, I forgot, as someone else said, use the skull markers to dodge enemy attacks and set them up for powerful counterattacks. (Be sure to Slow when they're dizzy.) Nothing makes blasting through an onslought of enemies easier than being able to launch one of them into all the others.

Thanks for the tips, guys.

Well, I made it past Gran Bruce on Kids Mode. Those damn guard electricity thingers took me a half an hour to get past. Eventually I had to restart the level with a bunch of Vroomerangs - cause I just wasn't able to land consistant hits. The electricity kept on blowing me away.

I like the villains, 'cause they're obviously done in the style of Sentai/masked men Japanese villains. Only actually intimidating. I just can't figure out what the fuck any of them are saying. They all sound like drunken midgets who've inhaled helium and swallowed gravel. I don't suppose anyone has a script of the game so I can find out what the hell is going on.

Oh, and naming sharks "Bruce" stopped being clever after Finding Nemo. Yes, it was the nickname of Jaws. Let it go.

I had the same problem, just hit them rapidly in Mach Speed when they're down. Makes it a whole lot easier.

Considering the game has parodies of every big movie of the past it is no doubt they named the shark Bruce.

Probably just being a prick, but Shin Megami Tensei =! Persona. Persona's an offshoot series. But at this point, it probably doesn't matter anymore.

Snuh. All sharks are from Australia. Of course they're going to be called Bruce.
Sentai
liek omfg I've been trying to remember that word for fucking ages. Thanks for reminding me.

Current news: Still stuck on The Magnificent 5. I got to Another Joe but he owned me, my Take 2 and all my L.I.V.s. Dickhead.

The trick to beating Another Joe is simply to apply the pressure. That is, stay on top of him, and NEVER give him the chance to use his special attacks. Always go into Slow mode whenever he moves somewhere else so you can see which direction he's gone in, and always make sure to hit him with a good RHOH whenever he starts saying either "Henshin-a-Go-Go," "Henshin-a-bye-bye," or "C'mon Six Machine!" IF he manages to call out the Six Machine, destroy it quickly to get a hamburger for some extra health.

And if you think Another Joe is hard, just wait until you face Fire Leo. . .

There was a subtitle option in the GC version.
And you're gonna thank fucking God for fast mode when you fight the final boss.

Thanks for the tips on Another Joe, Timestones. I'm not worrying about Fire Leo, though. Fire Leo is my bitch.
