Something's Fishy... (Final SADX Strategy Guide Scans)

Post by big_smile »

The official Sonic Team Sonic Adventure DX strategy guide is the newest addition to my modest collection of Japanese Sonic books. As with the Heroes book, the guide is simply too large to scan every page, so I have just captured the interesting parts. Even then, there is still too much to upload in one go, so today we’ll just be looking at the animal related information.

I was really excited when I first saw the animal pages, as it seemed they all had names just like in the Mega Drive games. Unfortunately, after checking them with a Kana language table, it seems that they are only given descriptions. The fishes in Big’s game however, do appear to have names. With each scan, I have posted the translations I made. Preceding the equal sign is a brief description to aid identification on the actual pages. After the symbol is the Romanced form together with the English equivalent in brackets.

Animal scans:

Buy your own
It took multiple emails containing ISBN, publisher and other details, but Yes Asia finally have begun stocking a range of Sonic strategy guides (Sadly, they wont be able to sell the Sonic Jam guide as it is out of print). You can find the information in the news board.

That's is some pretty awesome stuff, but some of your Romanji looks a bit off.

Penquin = pengin
Seal = Azarashi (No such letter as "si")
Otter = Rakko (Little "tsu" doubles the consanont of the second character, as in "sonikku" = so ni small-tsu ku)

Flicky = Tsubame (No such letter as "tu")
Peacock = Kujyaku (ten ten on the "shi")

Deer = Shika (again, no "si" sound)
Wallaby = Warabii (You skipped this one)

Koala = Koara
Mole = Mogura (as in Harimogura = Echidna)
Skunk = Sukanku

Fish 1

Black Bass = Burakkubasu
Pirhana = Pirania
Mecha Fish = Mekafisshyu

Fish 2

Hammerhead = Hanmaa

Fish 3

Sea Bass = Shiibasu
Utsubo
Ishidai
Swordfish = Kajiki

Fish 4

Antenna = Ankoa
Red Worm thing = Ryuuguunotsukai
"Secret" = Shiirakansu

If I goofed up, let me know.

Okay, I looked through the texture files for the PC version of SADX, and I found the textures for the various fish, and found most of the filenames match your translations;

Fish Scan page 1
Green fish = Buratubasu/Burakkubasu-Couldn’t find this one
Purple fish = Dorania/ Pirania- PIRANIA.PVM; so Pirania would seem to be the correct name.
Metal green (secret) = Mekahuitusiko/Mekafisshyu- MECHA.PVM

Fish Scan page 2
Green fish = Buratubasu- Couldn’t find this one
Blue thin fish = Unagi- UNAGI.PVM; so Unagi would seem to be the correct name.
Metal green = Mekahuitusiko- MECHA.PVM
Blue Shark = Same- SAME.PVM; so Same would seem to be the correct name.
Red Hammerhead Shark = Wasoma/Hanmaa- Couldn’t find this one
Pearl coloured fish (Secret) = Sake- SAKE.PVM, so Sake would seem to be the correct name.

Fish Scan page 3
Yellow-greenish fish = Si-basu/Shiibasu- SEA_BASS.PVM
Yellow tiger thin fish = Utubo/Utsubo- UTSUBO.PVM, so Utsubo would seem to be the correct name.
Big Grey fish with green fins = Isidai/Ishidai- ISHIDAI.PVM, so Ishidai would seem to be the correct name.
Big Pink fish = Tai- TAI.PVM, so Tai would seem to be the correct name.
Metal green = Mekahuitusiko- MECHA.PVM
Blue Shark = Same- SAME.PVM, so Same would seem to be the correct name.
Grey Shark = Wasoma- Couldn’t find this one.
Swordfish (secret) = Kaziki/Kashiki- KAJIKI.PVM, so it seems it’s name is “Kajikiâ€￾

Fish Scan page 4
Ugly brown fish with antenna = Asokou/Ankoa- ANKO, so it seems it’s name is “Ankoâ€￾
Yellow tiger thin fish = Utubo/Utsubo- UTSUBO.PVM, so Utsubo would seem to be the correct name.
Blue Shark = Same (shark)- SAME.PVM, so Same would seem to be the correct name.
Grey Shark = Wasoma- Couldn’t find this one.
Pearl fish with orange legs = Riyuuguunotukai/Ryuuguunotsukai- RYUGU.PVM, so it seems it’s name is “Ryuguâ€￾
Ugly dark green fish (secret) = Si-rakasosu/Shiirakansu- Couldn’t find this one

I can also double-check on the animal names if you want ^^

Thank-you very much for checking the fish. Could you please post the texture file names of the two Sonic robots, the Chaos Emeralds (both the ones from the past and the present and the gold ones in Casinopolis) and, if possible, the town's people.

It would be really interesting to see how Sonic Team named these items.

Well, the textures for the two robot Sonic's in the tubes are both within the texture file for the Final Egg lab in the Mystic Ruins. Metal Sonic is referred to as msonic_blue, while the other one, who is presumably Mecha Sonic, is referred to as msonic_black. So that doesn't really make things any clearer =/

The emerald names;
M_EM_BLACK (what the emeralds look like after Perfect Chaos absorbs their energy)
M_EM_BLUE
M_EM_GREEN
M_EM_PURPLE
M_EM_RED
M_EM_SKY (sky blue)
M_EM_WHITE
M_EM_YELLOW

I'm not sure if the one seen in the past are seperate models or what. But I'll keep looking. I'll let you know as soon as I find what the gold emeralds in Casinopolis are called too, and the NPC's ^^

Whilst we're on the subject of Sonic Adventure names...what's Mr Know-It-All's Japanese name? Silv, anyone?

Chris Thorndyke?

What, he's an annoying little boy who keeps on sticking his nose where it doesn't belong.

It's like they were seperated at birth.

You could probably find that out by setting the text to Japanese, then talking to him.

Wouldn't it be cool if all the NPC's at Station Square had names?

If I remember right he says he is "mono shiri" (もの知り), which is more like "I'm awfully smart" than an actual name.

Hey Smile, does the guide have an enemy section as well? I'd just like to confirm some names.

Thanks for the file names. I’m surprised they named the robot M.Sonic – Black, as I thought his elongated spikes indicated he was the blue Mecha Sonic from Sonic & Knuckles. Could the term black be a reference to the darker Mecha Sonic from Sonic 2? Is it possible to post a jpeg of the textures, so we can know for sure (you can email them to big_smile@ntlworld.com if you don’t have the web space).

The graphic of him on the official SA Japanese in-game website is also named Monosiri.
Hey Smile, does the guide have an enemy section as well? I'd just like to confirm some names.
It does – I’ll try and scan them before the end of the week.

-----------------------------------------------

Here are the story related scans from the guide. (As two pages fit on the scan bed at a time, I have left in the unwanted parts that were scanned, so you can see more of the guide).

Timeline
This appears to be a time line of the six adventures (i.e. while Sonic & Tails tackle Ice Cap, Knuckles is in Red Mountain).

Maps
(It would be good if a Japanese reader could have a quick skim read of these just to see if there is any significant information or stuff that we don’t already know [particularly on the Mystic Ruin pages])
Station Square
Mystic Ruins
Egg Carrier
Mystic Ruins(Past Version – Includes sections on Tikal and Pachacamac)

Story sections
Epilogue - The text for this is actually on Sonic Dimension. When run through Akamai it reads: The supersonic power filled to reliance and consideration negated destructive action of chaos, the heart of chaos was relieved, and it went away with Tikal. Sonique also left in search of the new adventure.

Tails & Tikal
Amy & Tikal
Tails and Amy are the only characters who have there meetings with Tikal mentioned in the guide. I’m not sure what the significance (if any) of this is though.

Next time will be looking at the character profiles (make sure you save the above scans to your hard drive as they will probably be deleted to make room).

Nice stuff. My Japanese is just good enough to read Kana, so I can't really be that much help, but I did notice that the MR-Past map has a label marked "1" stating where Tails' Rythm Broach can be found. That may be why the Tails and Tikal section is printed because you can't progress without the broach and (for me at least) I found that part a bit difficult since I didn't know what the hell to do until I found the broach.

Yeah, if I remember correctly, Tails and Amy are the only two characters who have power-ups in the echidna village.

I'll also scan over those tonight or tomorrow.

I think both of Amy's level up items were found in the Hedgehog Hammer game. You got the Warrior Feather (spin attack) from the 2000 points and that was mandatory. Then you had to return to the EC after it crashed and get 3000+ points to get the Long Hammer.

The only other thing I can think of, is that Amy appears in the Temple area, but you actually have to go to the Shrine area to trigger a cutscene. Every other time travel journey puts the characters in the correct area to initiate a cinema.

How many pages are there for the whole thing? How many have you scanned? It might be a decent thing to add to SoST if it isn't too long..

And if you can, could you rescan that image of the page with Pachamac, so we can get his left hand in as well? I'll try to make a decent picture of him from that.

I like that pic as it proves he does have eyes :razz:
By the way, me and Lee were looking over that timeline yesterday, and have concluded that scene where Knuckles sees E-102 does make sense after all. When Knuckles sees E-102, he seems to be on his way to Station Square to find Kaeru-kun (in E-102's adventure, we don't see him making his way to Station Square, you're just warped straight there). And presumably, in the time it takes Knuckles to find E-102 going into the Mystic Ruins base, he's already found Kaeru-kun and is now on his way back to the Egg Carrier.
I hope that made sense to everyone ^^

Okay, I checked the animal names, again they mostly match your translations;

Swim
Penguin = Penguin/Penquin/Pengin- PEN.PVM
Seal = azarasi (seal)/Azarashi- Couldn’t find this one.
Otter = ratuko/Rakko- RAKO.PVM, so it seems it’s name is “Rakoâ€￾

Fly
Parrot = oumu (parrot)- OUM.PVM
Flicky-like bird = tubame (tsubame, meaning swallow).- TUBA.PVM
Peacock = kusiyaku/Kujyaku- KUJA.PVM, so Kujakyu would seem to be the correct name

Run
Rabbit = Usagi (Rabbit)- USA.PVM
Deer = sika (shika meaning deer)- Couldn’t find this one
Wallaby- Warabii- WARA.PVM

Power
Gorilla = gorira (gorillia)- GORI.PVM
Elephant = Zou- ZOU.PVM, so Zou would seem to be the correct name
Lion = raion (lion)- LION.PVM

All
Koala = /Komara (Koala)/Koara- KOAR.PVM
Skunk = Nukasoke/Sukankuu- SUKA.PVM, so Sukankuu would seem to be the correct name
Mole = Mogera (Mole)/Mogura- MOGU.PVM, so Mogura would seem to be the correct name.

Here’s the final part of the OSG scans

Character Profiles (Most include data files on the characters – It would be great if a Japanese reader could have a quick skim read to see if there is anything significant)
Sonic
Tails (Includes Sonic X feature)
Knuckles
Amy
Big
Zero
Tornado I
Tornado II
Super Sonic
Metal Sonic
Enemies
Pirates (picture)
Items(I scanned these just in case Green Gibbon ever wants to re-do the SA museum pages in the style of the Sonic 1 page).

Game Gear games
Page 1
Page 2
Page 3
Page 4

Super Sonic Story
I forgot to post this last time. It shows the scenes from Super Sonic’s story. It would be great if explained what caused Angel Island to fall, or why, when in the past, the Chaos Emeralds shrink in-size when Chaos removes them from the shrine.
How many pages are there for the whole thing? How many have you scanned? It might be a decent thing to add to SoST if it isn't too long..

It’s over 260 pages, so it’s a bit too big to scan in its entirety.
And if you can, could you rescan that image of the page with Pachamac, so we can get his left hand in as well? I'll try to make a decent picture of him from that.
Unfortunately, that is the best scan I can make (the spine is too thick).

Those are some awesome scans.

As for the Chaos Emeralds changing sizes, I don't think it's anything to worry about, the gems have four different sizes throughout the game ranging from being bigger then the Master Emerald (within stages) the size they are on the altar, to the size they are when characters hold them, to size they are when Knuckles finds six of them and leaves them by the ME. It's probably just inconsistency if anything.

Actually, there seems to be a consistent pattern to it. The body-sized form is used whenever the Emeralds are on an shrine (in S3&K, SA1 and SA2), while the hand-sized form is always used the Emeralds are away from the shrine. (The larger than body-sized form is usually reserved for when the Emeralds are an end-of-level goal and so probably doesn't have any story significance).

It's no big deal if they don't explain it (it adds to the mystery of the Emeralds and it would be tedious if they gave an explanation for everything), but the captioned picture of Chaos and the Emeralds just provoked my curiosity. ^_^
Those are some awesome scans.
Thanks ^_^
