OH MY GOD GUYS, LOOK WHAT THEY DID TO KID ICARUS! THEY'VE TRIED TO MAKE HIM ALL X-TREME AND HARDCORE WITH THIS EXTREMELY MODERATE ARTWORK!

Image
LOOK AT HIM! HE'S COMPLETELY COVERED IN TATTOOS AND LOADED UP WITH BADASS WEAPONS! KID ICARUS? MORE LIKE GRAND THEFT GREECE, AM I RIGHT?

Image
IF THE NEW KID ICARUS IS AS DARK AND EDGY AS THIS ART THEN I DON'T WANT TO PLAY IT! NINTENDO HAS SOLD OUT! MY CHILDHOOD IS BEING RAPED! I'D BETTER POST ABOUT THIS ON THE GHZ RIGHT AWAY!

Bad news, guys! It looks like they've ruined Link too!

That's not the Link I remember from the NES!

I'm not trying to be mean, guys, I just think you're all being a little bit silly! Factor 5 is considering reinterpreting an obscure old franchise in what looks to be a slightly more "serious fantasy" direction and you're acting like it's the second coming of Shadow. Pit is a character with very little history to be faithful to in the first place, and these early new renditions of him are about as dark and x-treme as my grandmother.

As far as I can see, all they've done is push him in a more realistic direction, much like they did with the post-8-bit versions of Zelda and Metroid. Heck, most of this art just looks like a non-anime version of the Smash Bros stuff. Sure, some of it is kind of rough or generic looking -- a given with concept art -- but it's hardly offensive on a conceptual level and implies none of the edgy, hardcore badassery that we all fear so thoroughly. I think maaaaybe you guys are just getting a bit paranoid.

Some of those do look a tad ridiculous, though. I mean, Link has always maintained some sort of consistency in his design over the years (mainly the green hat and tunic, lack of pants, sword and shield, etc.) but some of those don't even resemble Pit or anything that can be considered "Kid Icarus" at all.

This is honestly what bothers me (Angsty Pit concept art aside):
Factor 5 had imagined a plot starring a grown-up, adult Pit, who is "cursed for thousands of years for a crime and becomes a 'fallen angel.'" The pitch adds that "a tattoo on Pit's arm bears the inscription of Pit's crime."
And it's less to do with Kid Icarus and more to do with general trends. Can we no longer tell a story that doesn't begin with the main character getting out of jail for crimes he may or may not have committed for the right or wrong reasons? Are we incapable of identifying with a protagonist who isn't hardened by "thousands of years" of imprisonment? Does he have to be an "adult?" And then there's this insipid detail about the tattoo. Tats are almost as cool as jail, kiddos!

Maybe these are great ideas, and maybe it's not exactly what it sounds, and maybe the final product (if there even is one) won't have anything to do with it. But I remember when a close friend of mine told me he couldn't get into Grandia because the main character was too young. Maybe Man Icarus is the only way. Why all these particular tropes? All that's missing is the "Evil Pit" mode and all the "Dark Powers" he'll gain as he progresses through the game (don't forget those "RPG Elements!").

Also, why are you nearly 3 weeks late to the thread?

Didn't realize it was that old! I must have missed it the first time around, and only saw it when someone else bumped it yesterday.

Anyhow dude, I just think you are reading way too much into that two sentence, second hand description -- which makes absolutely zero mention of imprisonment, jail, or a tougher, hardened personality for Pit. It just says he's accused of a crime and has a branded curse put on him. So what's the big deal? I'm pretty sure I've seen an episode of Ducktales that went like that. I don't think it's a guarantee of any of the things you are worried about.

Fool me once, shame on you. Buy Jak III, shame on, well, you and your entire family. Forever and always. Or something like that.

And to be fair, Esrever, Wind Waker Link was pretty damn cartoony. Only people got in a huff over him not being grown up enough. So basically, whatever.

In fairness, the main character from Grandia is quite young, and acts sort of like the annoying little brother you never had, only on a quest to save the world. I mean, come on. Like the first thing you do in the game is go find a "sword" and "armor" that turns out to be like a stick and a cooking pot or something. :P Not that the game is terrible or anything, but I can at least see where your friend is coming from. ;)

On the actual game: Eh. I'm not really against the idea of a more mature Kid Icarus (though, yeah, they may have to change the name :P). I would be against a God of War clone with Pit in it, though, and that sure is an impression I got from the Kombo article. I'm not gonna get too concerned until there's some kind of official word, though.

...every time I read this thread I end up with the Kid Icarus music they did for Brawl in my head....
