Fun, Profit, and Burning

Ever so often, on any gaming forum, you'll see a random person bragging about how they've burned oh so many games and are playing them without having to pay a single dime (particularly when the Dreamcast is concerned). A number of follow-ups will be quick to argue that they should buy legal copies of their games, as opposed to getting bootlegged copies...

To which the person replies that it's not much different than picking up a used copy in a game store. Sure, you're getting the real CD, case, and CD, but the money isn't going to the company. Same with ganking a burned copy of a game.

Is that train of thought really very correct? Seems logical enough, but there's something about holding a real copy of a game in your hands, regardless if it's used or not...

The person still had to pay for a used copy. The other guy is outright stealing the game.

What was it with Dreamcast pirating? DC ISOs were more popular than a bag of potato chips in a room full of stoners.

Maybe I'm just using that analogy because at the moment I'm stoned and eating potato chips. 'Tis a mystery.

I can't help but think that played a part in the quick death of the Dreamcast. It was absolutely nauseating how many people we got in the store asking about Dreamcast games only to wryly comment that they didn't need to buy them, because they got them for free from the internet. As though that made them superior. And there's no telling how many more there were who at least had the decency to not discuss their activities out loud in a retail store.

People used to buy a lot of Playstation pirates games, but it had'nt sunk like the Dreamcast. That's one of the reasons I hate them so much. The other one is that thanks to them, I couldn't play the Megaman x series directly anymore. Filhos da Puta.

But, at least at the MMX department, things are getting better. GCN players (like me) will have MMX:Command Mission, and I red in other site that this version is far better than the PS2 one! TAKE THAT, JERKS!!!
But we own something to Sony.
Thanks to them (and Bill Motherf**ker Gates), Every single publisher is motiveded to make better games, and those are cheaper than they could be with only one console on the market. So, an hurray to the concorrence (or whatever you Yankees call it). Hurray.

Yeah, it's pretty stupid. Why would you be proud of having something that you ripped? I would be proud of actually owning the game.

Is the GBA selling at all? There are so many emulation sites and an emulator that's actually really good, so I figured nobody would be buying the real thing when they have those things at their disposal.

I emulate plus - I bought one.

I needed my Pokemon fix. Even though I already had the ROM. I also had a bunch of old Gameboy Games (21) that I felt like playing again. I'd also like to get Mario & Luigi, and FFTA - even though I already have the ROMs.

Although it is true I would have bought more GBA games had I not played them on the emulator in the first place - mostly because emulation allowed me to find out which games royally sucked without having to buy them.

A friend of mine used to burn DC games all the time. It takes him about 10 times longer to load legitamit games. And I admit that I have a burned copy of Dead or Alive 2 Japanese edition. It's slown down my DC slightly, or atleast it seems that way. It's hard to tell if it's because of the DoA or because I don't have as much time for DC nowdays, leaving it to collect dust most of the time.

Burned DC games have longer loading times, but it has no effect on normal games. I've tried this on two systems on several occassions, and I think it's safe to say that burned DC games have no lasting effect on your console.

I know because I bought games from... somewhere (can't remember the name of the place, otherwise I'd get more), and instead of giving you the actual cd, they would give you a burned copy. Some needed a disc so that you could run the game properly (in the case of ChuChu Rocket, at least). Still, it was better to have the real thing, as my copy of Soul Calibur didn't work until I bought the actual cd.

The second-hand game world doesn't do the games industry as a whole any damage. The freedom to sell a game on if you don't like it, or once you're finished with it, acts as a sort of insurance for a lot of people buying a new game.

The retail world absolutely thrives on that. There isn't much profit at all in new games or systems. At GameStop in particular, there's less than a $5 profit on each new PS2 system sold, and when you sell a game with an employee discount, the company actually loses money. On the other hand, if you sell a copy of, say, used Xenosaga, it's a as much as a $20 profit or more. If there wasn't a used market, retail chains that specialize in software basically wouldn't even exist.

I still hate used games. The only instance where I'd ever purchase a game that's been soiled in a stranger's system is if A) it's a game I've been wanting and missed when it was new, and B) it's in immaculate condition. I'm not big on dealing with other people's filth.

The only used game I've ever bought was Turok evolution, and the case wasn't damaged at all. It's kind of hard to find any new, 'unsoiled' games, because there's only one coloumn in GAME for the GC and about 5 for XBOX, PS2, and PC games. Unless I travel farther to another GAME store, that's all I'm going to get. Goddamnit. I need a new gaming system.

Used games just seem soiled or something to me. I like mine to be virgins. The only games I've ever sought out to buy used were Burning Rangers and Sonic Jam on eBay a couple of years back. I got a used one of Burning Rangers, but the Sonic Jam I found was still in its original shrink wrap so that was kind of cool.
