It was freaking simple. There are only two possible options. Jumping, which obviously doesn't work and pressing up and down.
I beg to differ. I alternated jumping with Sonic and Tails for about a minute until I could get by the barrel. That was what I thought you were supposed to do until my friend passed it in about four seconds. I felt like such a dumb ass. It turns that the up/down shit is actually in the instructions under the Carnival Night Zone section, but who reads those?

Another way to get past that barrel is taking advantage of the form of Super Sonic. Make sure you have all seven chaos emeralds and 50 rings when you get to that barrel point (don't change to Super Sonic yet), and bounce up and down until you think it's bouncing up and down enough, and while the barrel is down enough, do a small jump and change to Super Sonic and he'll be stationary in place during the transformation sequence while the barrel zooms pass up him.

I used to do that all the time. I still don't know how to easily go pass that barrel without Super Sonic, although I've done it the non-Super Sonic ways a couple of times.

How did you alternate jumping with Sonic and Tails? Were you using two controllers?

You can press 'mode' to make Tails jump or fly and carry sonic around.

Sweet! I didn't think of that, either.

It's like the Select button for rapidfire MegaDrive controllers. I think. Some arse broke my Logic Pro RapidFire 6-Button pad when I was a kid so I haven't used it in about 7 years.

Oh, I only had the standard 3 button ABC controllers with Start. I would just have my friend control Tails. It made that one boss a lot easier. Marble Garden Zones' boss if I remember correctly. The 3rd boss of Sonic 3.

You can use the Mode button to control Tails?

That you can. I've done it before, because before I found out how to move the cylinders I just pushed every single button, and found out by accident.

EDIT: I just played the game again, and my mode button wasn't doing anything... What the hell? I swear to god that it did last time. Then again, there is no other button that CAN do it... maybe my mode button isn't working or something. Unless Tails moved exactly when I pressed Mode, which is very unlikely, or it was another button. Man, I screwed that up.

Can anybody check to see if I was right about that?

C can move both of them, but when I try to fly up Sonic keeps jumping out of Tails' hands, so it couldn't be C.

I still thik it's simpler to go up the barrel and press up & down timely.
Ponto final.

Say, who is cooler, Shadow or Tails?

I used to find a water bubble to save before I got to that point. When I got up to the barrels I'd use a turbo controller to help bring the barrel down. I remember screaming in pain as I accedently got hit and land into a checkpoint pole and lose my bubble having to start the level all over again.

I think that barrel is the reason I own a Game Genie... not that it ever helped me get around the stage.

Tails, obviously. He can fly, and he's more unique. Every single fucking heroic character you can name has an evil twin - but not many have a mechanically gifted, mutated, little boy for a sidekick.

That's like asking which is cooler: lukewarm water or warm water?

Lumewarms? Don't those burrow into sand holes on the fifth planet of the Tatooine system?

I figured the barrel thing out when I was 8, but only after running into the old 10:00 barrier twice...
