I made a Wing Fortress

Post by chriscaffee »

Last summer I started piecing together screen grabs from Sonic 2 and putting together an uncompressed pixel-perfect image of the Wing Fortress. Then I forgot about it for five months, and finished it up today. So here it is, weighing in at 11456 x 1408. I thought someone else might be interested. Could use it for the encyclopedia if a Wing Fortress entry gets made.

Couldn't you have just, like, dumped the level map using SonED or something? Stealth did.

Edit: Wow, that sucks. Looks like Stealth's Wing Fortress map was replaced by a full-size map similar to mine. Oh well, it was a fun puzzle to put together I suppose.

Well, that is one broken design. It's a wonder Eggman managed to make it fly.

Literally. Like, the ship's in two pieces. And even more bizarre, the front half has no propulsion components at all.

Maybe the crane elements are meant to be internal and they just "removed" the outer housing in those areas so you can see where you are going. Or it could just be the same sort of stuff that makes all those platforms float.

I'm just surprised the entire level is shaped vaguely like an aircraft of any kind.

The shape vaguely reminds me of a fish. ...a fish chopped into multiple pieces at least.

What was that project?

I'm suddenly taken by the idea of a desktop background that scrolls around (with multiple layers) according to mouse position on screen.

I once did a Green Hill Zone. It was a bitch to do it.

Necro-bump.

So I was going through old files today and saw the two Wing Fortress maps, the one I did and the one Ritz linked to. I just happened to check the image sizes and sure enough they both measured the same height, but the lengths were different. After a quick check I found that the runway at the front of the ship on mine was a bit longer. I booted up the ROM to verify that I hadn't added some extra framework by mistake, and indeed I didn't.

So, the unexciting conclusion of it all is, if that other map is a dump from a ROM, then that means that Wing Fortress is different for different versions of Sonic 2. I remember a glitch ages ago on my Genesis where sometimes (on a very rare occasion) Super Sonic when jumping from the Wing Fortress to the Tornado at the end of the level, would overshoot the jump and die. I wonder if this was related, or maybe the other map isn't a dump and someone just goofed up when putting together screens of the level.

Needs some Zonde, because I'm feeling a little TTF at the moment. :Z:
