No Midna or Dark Samus..... ah well, ALTTP dark world theme for the win.

And will someone tell me why exactly the friggin game comes out tomorrow in Japan and in march here? I lay my bets on voice chat being implemented for the un-thankful Americans.

God, I hope not.

I think someone mentioned this earlier, but it might be online related, like playing it at a smooth rate and such.

If this is truly Angel Island, I think I can forgive Sakurai for using the overused GHZ as Sonic's stage.

Here's a screenshot of the most complete non-fake roster that's been posted online so far. Only one character is missing:

Image

The assumption is that it is Wolf, because adding a character below Falco will push everyone move over one space and cause the characters to line up in columns by franchise. (Lucario will move one space to the right into a column with the other Pokemon characters; Bowser will move to the bottom left and thus be in a column with the other Mario characters, etc.)

However, I haven't seen any actual screenshots of Wolf in game anywhere yet... so I suppose it could possibly be a different Star Fox character, or maybe even an F-Zero character? I guess we'll see! If it is Wolf the choice is a little bizarre, just because he's so similar to Fox, but the rest of the roster are all good choices so it's not like I'm going to complain.

Yeah, in retrospect that comment was over the top. Sure, the inner Sonic fanboy would have perferred Chemical Plant, but it's probbably more "Sonicy" to me than most. GHZ fills that definition for those not familiar with the franchise. I was just speaking out of my initial hope of a break from the overused nostalgia. Maybe I should have considered that they remade SMB stage 1-1 in its entirety before spouting out my emotional opinion like that.

Wolf is a strange choice. Didn't they already give Fox a Wolf colour palette? A character having one "clone" is acceptable, but how are Fox, Falco and Wolf going to be differentiated?

In ways so subtle as to be all but nonexistent for people not playing without items on Final Destination.

Still, Sakurai has said before that there wouldn't be any clone characters this time, so I'm curious as to how much water that statement ends up holding- hopefully Falco's got a bit more to set him apart this time around.

There are pictures floating about of WW Link using his Bow, just like Link. And Ganondorf doesn't have a sword. And Fox/Falco's final smashes are the same.

Unfortunately, it seems like clones are back.

Casino Night would have been the best choice for a secondary Sonic stage, since it's recognizable and has obvious gameplay interest.
Unfortunately, it seems like clones are back.
Which makes me wonder why not all of them are back. The list of characters could have been bumped to 40 by retaining Young Link, Roy, Mewtwo, Dr Mario, and Pichu. It would have taken them three weeks to slip all five of them into the game. They don't even need their own FS. Just give them Link's, Marth's, Lucario's, Mario's, and Pikachu's. Really odd why those five were singled out.

There's still that whole snafu with Krystal's voice actor's page to consider. Will she be playable, an AT, or was the whole thing a mistake? It's a mystery down to the last!

Isn't it Bomberman? I thought I saw a roster picture at GoNintendo, and another one with "Bomber Kirby." Maybe they were fake.

Maybe it's just me, but WW Link (or "Toon Link", as he's being called now) appears to have a notable lack of cel-shading. This is not necessarily bad, but weird as heck it is. And I'm going to miss Mewtwo.

I think, but am not 100 percent sure, that the Bomberman thing was a hoax. I just don't see them keeping a 3rd party character a secret... they'd want to advertise it, like they have with Sonic and Snake.

As for the clone characters... I assume Falco was brought back simply because he was so widely used. As for Gannon, Jigglypuff and Toon Link (who serves as the new Young Link, I imagine), perhaps they have been be tweaked to play a bit less similarly to their base characters now. Or perhaps their base characters themselves have been tweaked in Brawl, and are now less similar to their old clones!

I'm not expecting totally distinct characters, but perhaps they're more distinct than they were before. And maybe the other clones were removed because they didn't have much potential to be any more distinct than they already were. I can certainly see how Pichu and Dr. Mario could be like that. And I also see how it could be hard to come up with a version of Roy that was less similar to Marth but that also didn't overlap with Ike.

Anyhow, maybe the new, smaller group of clones are more distinct. Or maybe they are exactly the same as they were before, and they just axed the clones that were the least popular! But either way I'm glad they're keeping the clones to a minimum... I mean, I wouldn't want to see the line-up cluttered with nearly ten of them, that's just getting ridiculous.

Mostly I'm glad there aren't any NEW clones. Thank goodness . . .

Now I want to know about the stages . . . I think it's cute the new F-Zero stage has ROB in it.

Well, she was obviously only included in the original game because her animations are based off Kirby, but her moves never overlapped at all.

Wouldn't really make sense. For all intents and purposes Toon Link is the new Young Link. OoT Young Link would feel out of place, and if they TP-ised him they'd essentially be creating a new version of Link, which goes against the spirit of the Smash Bros series. There's really no need for three versions of Link, they were wise to choose the two most recent and most radically different versions of the character. Although personally I'm partial to the design used in the Oracle of Ages/Seasons official artwork.
Zeta wrote:Mostly I'm glad there aren't any NEW clones.
Lucas and Ike kind of are, aren't they? The only difference is that their predecessors are unlockables.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Ganondorf's moveset is like this time around. The change in speed and power made him distinct enough from Captain Falcon the first time around, but I hope that they've given him some unique attacks for Brawl.

Anyway, the overall line-up is good and the number of noticable clones is small enough. Good riddance to Pichu and Dr Mario. But if they really have added Wolf then damn, there's no excuse for dropping Mewtwo.

I thought Jiggly flew like Kirby and maybe had some of his basic punches or something. I didn't realize there was no move overlap!

I'm sort of sad to see Dr. Mario completely out, it would have been cool to have him just as an alternate to Mario (not really a different character) just like Wario has two different models. Much cooler than alternate color schemes!

Meh, at least his music is in for the Pictochat stage. Yes, there was a Dojo update today that nobody cares about due to the sheer amounts of info we've received from early Japanese copies.
