It's just you.
Well, it's hard to believe, but the summer is already almost over. I move out on the 19th, so I have less than a week left before My College Experience: Year One begins. I'm not nearly as stoked as I thought I was going to be.
I've deduced that there are primarily three reasons why I'm shuffling my feet as I head out the door.
Reason the First: No more on-air hours at the radio station. At least, not for awhile. This is depressing because this was, like, half of how I spent my summer; any free time being with my girlfriend. Aside from the fact that I really love this job, it was also a great excuse to not have to hang around my group of friends. I mean, I enjoy their company, at least I think I do, but I definitely feel like I've outgrown them, you know?
Reason the Second: The University itself kind of intimidates me, I'll admit. It's not that it's too big (it is big, at least compared to what I'm used to, but I'm not worried about that). And it's a great place, I've heard, for what I'm going into (which is why I chose it). However, it also has a reputation for being one of the biggest party schools in the state and I've never been into getting drunk. I guess I'm not sure why this bothers me. Obviously, there was plenty of that going on at my high school and it was never a big deal for me. And, you know, I've never had a problem with getting friends or anything like that.. but seriously, just about the entire time during the two-day Orientation and Registration, all anyone was talking about was how they couldn't wait to get wasted. It felt difficult to connect with that.
Incidentally, the other thing that Bowling Green is well known for is that it's the STD capital of the world.
Great.
Reason the Third: A lot less sex and good lovin'. While I shuffle off to BG, my girlfriend will be a senior in high school this year. And although it's only an hour or so drive from one to the other, it's still a lot farther away than before, which means we won't see each other nearly as much. Plus, when she comes and visits, I'm not sure how much privacy we'll get. I guess I'll have to work out something with my roomate.
But still.
Well, anyway, that's enough needless worrying. I'm sure it'll turn out great and I'll love it. Besides, I'll be getting free (and much faster; stupid dial-up at home..) internet. That's always good.
I know there's a few others on the board that are entering their first year of college this year. Anyone have similar concerns or is it just me?

Well, i guess my future in college will be horrible...great...*sigh*Green Gibbon! wrote:College is everything you fear and worse. Most people who start don't finish, and the ones who do become angry, cynical, and deeply frustrated, like me. By the time you turn 20, your soul will be dead.

Im entering for my first year too. Right now my too biggest worries are who my roommate is going to be. I don't like the idea of moving in with a complete stranger, luckily my friends will be close by, I opted not to live with them because I knew I'd grow to hate them real fast if I did. Second is did I take classes that are too damn hard. I know I passed all those AP classes, but that doesn't mean I knew the shit, to get a 4 on an AP test you need like a 50% or something. I seriously doubt I should be taking Calc II. Also I heard I wasn't supposed to take 3000 classes until junior year, in the program I'm currently in I'm supposed to take Physics 3210 in the Spring. That is going to be a bitch I imagine.

I really enjoyed my time at University, but as Gibbon will tell you, that's because I'm one of those fucking four-year graudates. ;)
It's also because the University of Victoria is a great school, and because I didn't have to take many courses I wasn't interested in. I minored in writing and publishing, and since I've gradded I've landed a job as graphic designer for a kids' science mag, so I guess my education even led to post-grad employment. Needless to say, I'm not really very bitter about my University years. I still live a few blocks away from campus, and actually, I find myself spending a lot of time up there. I think I kind of miss it.
I never really got used to everyone's burning desire to get wasted either. Not drinking won't make you a social outcast, though... it'll just make you bored at a lot of parties.

I move out on Sunday. They didn't build my dorm yet, so I'm living in a hotel for a couple months. Which should be OK, but no fast internet and I've got a roommate who I may or may not want to kill by Wednesday.
Otherwise I'm looking forward to it.

Mmh... actually, I already started my first year in University, and it hasn't been the hell I though it would be. Sure, the homeworks are long and tedious, but, hey...
Of course, right now I'm 17, and since I already have "job safety", it couldn't get any better.
Then again... it's "school"... so it SUCKS!!!

Time will tell if I grow to hate him. I'll let you know.

Thanks for the offer GG!, but I'm stuck in the computer field. I'd really like to expand on what little drawing skill that I have, and sadly, it's going to waste; and I think I've got some potential.
Thanks anyway though, I really appreciate it.

college
I'm starting my first year of college as well. I'll be going to Michigan State University this saturday. I'm not really nervous about it at all. I've been pretty well prepared for college all my life. During my senior year of high school I actually had the same hours of class that I will in college. Due to holes in my schedule (thanks to taking advanced math in middle school, and by "not failing") I was frequently riding the bus home, often making several trips back and forth to school in a single day.
Though our house was big by Japanese standards, it was small by American. In fact, it wasn't even a house. It was quadex, if such a term exists: Four familes each with a two floor, three bedroom "house." My room was actually smaller then my dorm is. Though I will be sharing that room with another dude, I've often had friends over that have been confined to my room due to my parents making use of one of the TVs.
Moving around every two, three, and four years has pretty much conditioned me to be flexible enough to accept anything college can throw at me. I don't think there will be any problem when I move in.
Finally money is not an issue. That was really my only concern. I didn't want to leave college with debt. My parents apparently had the same idea when they worked their way through school so their paying for 90% of the bills. My scholarships and "life savings" are more then enough to make up for the rest.
I've been waiting for college my whole life. School up until this point has been an asinine excercise of being able to survive the system. College is different: I don't have taking a single fucking English or History class, period.

Re: college
Um... you will have to take English and History classes in college. It's all part of getting a "well rounded" education.chriscaffee wrote:I've been waiting for college my whole life.
