No more 60GB PS3?

Post by Senbei »

I know general consensus here is that the PS3 is too expensive to give a damn over, but if anyone was actually excited about the $100 price drop in America, you might want to reconsider allowing Sony the benefit of the doubt.

According to SCEE president David Reeves, SCEA is trying to phase out the 60GB version of the PS3, meaning that we Americans will only have the $600 80GB + Motorstorm bundle to choose. If Reeve's comments in the interview posted above are accurate, it certainly sounds like we're getting screwed over.

Well, they're not really are they, because what the US are offering from the 1st of August is a USD 599 version with one game. All they're doing is taking their stock in trade that they've got at the moment of the 60GB model, marking the price down and it will all be gone by the end of July.

So once the 60GB is gone, that will be the end of the 60GB then?
In America, yes.

Truth be told, despite how much fun it is to ridicule Sony's business decisions, if someone saved up $500 for a PS3, I'd personally say the extra hundred would be worth it. You buy a console, it's a commitment. It's not like $500 is an incredibly reasonable price in the first place, might as well go for broke.

You know, literally.

I actually thought they couldn't really cut the price given the fact that they're already losing way too much money with the ridiculous current tag.

But I think they could at least cut the 20 GB SKU some 50 bucks, just to get into "almost 360" price window.

I agree, Dack. But I don't appreciate having a $500 price tag dangled in front of my nose and then whipped away. If I'm going to have to pay another $100, I'd rather spend $60 of it on a game I want, certainly not Motorstorm. And then, hey! I've still got $40 to spend on another game I want.

That's really too bad. I know a lot of people were hoping to use that extra 100 bucks to buy their ps3 controllers over again when they put the rumble back in.
