The Green Lantern movie - starring Jack fucking Black in a comedic role.

Someone needs to KILL whoever's in charge of comic book adapatations at WB.

The funny thing is, that the comic-book cartoons WB and DC have produced together always end up being pure, animated, gold.

The funny thing is, that they're totally ignoring everything Spiderman and X-men and all the recent superhero movies that were successful did right - they took themselves seriously and actually - ya know - paid attention to the material it was based on.

Of course, the other problem with this should be obvious.

Is this new, WB has been fucking up comicbook movies since Batman Forever... And at the same time they turned Kevin Smith version of a new Superman movie since Tim Burton didn't like it... But now it really doesn't matter comicbook movies are just the new pop-genre, like action movies were in the 80's... They will turn any comic into a movie now... Man-thing, you know the Marvel Swamp-thing is coming out in a few months... As for Jack Black, maybe they will go with old GL suit from the first one atleast that isn't skin tight...

Well, I'm stoked for Batman Begins, anyway.

I haven't heard too much about the Green Lantern flick other than Jack Black could be in the lead role. I'll wait to pass judgment until I hear more, because I honestly don't think the GL property on it's own is interesting enough for average Johnny Cockenmauf movie-goer and perhaps JB could make it more interesting.

Of course, nothing's going to compare with Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny. That's gonna be orgasmic.

EDIT: On a side note, has anyone else picked up Batman: The Animated Series Volume 1 Box Set? In my opinion, this was easily the greatest American dramatic cartoon ever (although, as I've discovered, some of the early ones were quite shitty).

With the GL/Jack Black thing, it sounds like they're basically trying to emulate The Mask... I'm no GL fan, but that doesn't sound like an especially good idea to me. And I love Jack Black, but it's not like he hasn't been in bad movies before. ;)

There are quite a few more subpar episodes than I remembered, and a few truly awful ones, such as "The Last Laugh", "Forgotten", "Christmas with the Joker", "I've Got Batman in My Basement" and maybe "Prophecy of Doom", "Be a Clown" and "the Cat and the Claw" two-parter. It wasn't until "The Joker's Favor" that they began to figure out how to use the character (it seemed like they couldn't yet figure out a balance between the cartoonish clown and mass murderer interpretations) and even then it still wasn't one of the best Joker episodes. Incidentally, the animation is a lot worse than I remember.

However, the early portion of the series also had some of the best episodes of the entire run. "Heart of Ice", "The Clock King", "Feat of Clay" parts 1&2, "Two-Face" parts 1&2 (especially part 2), "See No Evil", and "It's Never Too Late" were all great. Actually, I made it a point to pick up Mask of the Phantasm when I bought Volume One and I've been enjoying that a lot. It's better than I remembered.

I can't wait for Volume Two, though. Those episodes are less hit-or-miss and more consistently entertaining.

And I love Jack Black, but it's not like he hasn't been in bad movies before. ;)

I enjoyed Spiderman 1 alot because it had alot of Parker's past and the first half of the story was how Spidermna came to be.

Spiderman II wasn't so great. I guess it's just because I'm a huge Dafoe fan and he was in the second movie for like 2 seconds. Which isn't bad considering his character is dead though.

Spiderman II seemed too much like "Peter Parker's Bad Day" to me. Once he became Spiderman he was more confident and less clumsy, but in the movie he was still shown to be a bumbling dolt until he put on the speedos. Then he could swing from building to building without any trouble at all.


Kirstun Dunst is also only good for acting if you need her to hang from a ledge and scream. Other than that she's horrible.


Now that I've gotten that out of the way, riddle me this:

The new Batman movie is supposed to be very dark and more detective and not action oriented (HURRAY! Batman as he should be!) and the Catwoman movie was light and heavy action. How are they going to mix the two together without having a huge clash of interest?

Because that's what they were planning on if I recall correctly.

Aannyywwaayy.. anybody read the early script to Batman Begins? I have it downloaded, just haven't read it yet. People say if the movie is executed correctly, it could very well be the best one yet. Warner Bros. hasn't even touched the movie. It's all been Nolan and his crew. Sounds really promising.

I noticed that too. But later on in the series, they found the perfect balance - a mass murderer who's so entertaining - that you almost want to applaud him WHILE he's shooting you.

Like Jack the Ripper mixed with Eddie Murphy.

I've Got Batman in my Basement was almost at a Superfriends level of bad. Still - it was nice to see roles reversed.

Instead of Batman keeping a little boy in a dank hole, a little boy kept Batman in a dank hole.

My favorite episode of the Animated Series was Legends of the Dark Knight. Mixed all three versions of Batman into one episode - campy, dark and gothic, and moderate.

Plus, they poked fun at Schumacher by having a flaming little boy named "Joel" prance around and fantasize about Batman wearing rubber costumes.

Fucking priceless.

The problem is that WB actually own DC Comics, or have a large stake in them, so even if the creatives plead not to screw up their characters, WB always have the final [stupid] say.

I'm really REALLY looking forward to the new Batman movie. I loved the Animated Series, and Burtons Batman wasn't too shabby, but they never went into WHY Batman is Batman, which is what Batman Begins will do. I loved Memento as well, so the Director will pull this one off really well.

I hear the GL movie is written a bit like 'The Mask', in that Jack Black, a silly guy, is given the Lanterns Magic Ring.

They already did that in 30 minutes when Daffy Duck became a Green Lantern. Anything else would just kinda be that stretched into an 120-minute movie. Of course - that episode was only funny because Daffy Duck was the only one who wasn't taking any of the events seriously - while the entire Green Lantern Corps. played the straight man.

That was a great episode of Duck Dodgers by the way.

I'm a rabid Carrey fan and have been even way back to when he was just doing stand-up. I don't love all of his movies, but those that I do, I love with a passion.

And did you ever see "Mona Lisa Smile?" That movie proved one thing to me when I saw it. Kirsten Dunst can't act. And neither can Julia Roberts.

And yet they seemed like they could...I don't...I don't understand.

Except that the movie sucked and the characters were shallow and it was just a weak attempt at a Dead Poets Society style movie.

But I stand by the fact that Dunst couldn't act to save her life. Exception being perhaps Eternal Sunshine. But if you do enough movies I guess you eventually get lucky.

I doubt we'll ever get a DC universe based movie as good as Batman: The Mask of the Phantasm. It's a crying shame that it didn't get as much attention at the box office as the other films simply because it was animated.

I think Jack Black as the Green Lantern would be fucking awesome, but I've never really seriously read the comic book so I wouldn't understand the blasphemy. Hey, I think the guy's funny, plus he has the best rock singing voice since Freddie Mercury. They could make a GL rock musical! It's be kickass!

Well we all know how sucktacular Catwoman will be. Considering they've already made a movie Catwoman, and she was the purest pinnacle of Catwoman delight possible, getting Halle Berry to run around in leather underwear for 90 minutes to give fanboys new wank material is just plain silly. Whether it's good or not (which it won't be) the main problem is just that it realy doesn't need to exist.

And rewinding ever so slightly, what the hell is Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny?

Man, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was great. It will always be the definitive Batman movie for me. I love the way that they came up with a plot that could work in aspects of Batman's origin without actually making an "origin" movie, and work in the Joker without actually making a "Joker" movie. So tight. Plus it was great to see a Batman cartoon free of the censors... where it was actually possible to DO a movie about a series of murders. And the Phantasm was awesome.

Many of the episodes Grant listed (the good ones, at least) are some of my all-time favs, so I guess I'll have to pick up the collection, too. The Clayface two-parter is good stuff. Was "Out of Sight" the episode with the guy who could turn invisible?

I still haven't seen the episode that was done in the three different styles. That was after Batman moved from Fox to the WB, which is only available on digital cable where I love.

Also, are there people who DON'T like the Truman Show?
