The blandness of the Bahamut scene could probably be attributed to the fact that every character sans Cloud and Tifa only got about 5 seconds of screen time throughout the entire movie, and seeing as how they were restricted to that one scene alone, the whole fight wound up scatterbrained and choppy. Not nearly as awesome as it could've been, but still one of my favorite scenes, for some reason.

Perhaps that's why I enjoyed it as much as I really did. Because I get to see some of the other faces other then staring at friggin' Cloud for the majority of the movie.
Of course you are going to be, "staring at friggin' Cloud for the majority of the movie." Not only is he the central character of the game, but he is arguably Square's most popular character. Personally, I thought throwing all of the characters in for a 5-second cameo was ridiculous and tacky, but the film pure fanservice and naturally it comes with the territory.

I must say that I did enjoy the film because I knew what to expect (mediocre story, bitchin' fight scenes, and impressive CGI). I am a huge fan of Pixar (I dig Pixar more than I dig Final Fantasy), but I have to agree with Light Speed and say that AC features the best CG I have seen as of yet.

It's not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but it's a fun popcorn flick regardless.

That doesn't mean I can't rant about. Square's been taking a hell of a lot of fanservice with it's FF7 crap and quite frankly, staring at Cloud everywhere I go doesn't make me any happier. I seriously HATE that guy. I mean, back then it was more of an "I don't care" to disliking, but now I seriously just hate him.

I'm damn tired of Cloud as well. About the only Final Fantasy hero I dislike more than him is Squall, mostly because he was an angsty bishonen, probably one of my least favorite archetypes in video gaming (bitchy, violent, man-hating female and token underage girl / annoying little boy are the only archetypes I hate more).

Well, like him or not, Cloud comes with the Final Fantasy VII territory. If you dislike Cloud so much that he is unbearable to you then maybe you should not play games/watch movies that have the words "Final Fantasy VII" in the title.

The CG in Advent Children is really bad, though! The models and texturing are very detailed in all that, but the animation is stilted and lifeless and the faces are downright creepy. The reason that Pixar and other companies don't animate their films this way is because it sucks.

Agree with creepy faces, the animation still seems fine to me.
Well, mostly the action scenes; there are moments when it's really hideous.

Maybe this has something to do with this thing I heard long ago about the movie being originally planned to last 30 minutes or so. Probably they heard the fan's angry roar and started to render all new scenes so fast it had to worsen the animation.

The scenes suffer from too main problems:
a) Too large: Scene sets like the Bahamut fight, bike scenes and the Sephiroth fight look way too expansive and even endless.
b) Too self-contained: Most of the scenes feel like theatre, you can only see what is in a set space. There is no feeling of a world, just places. This is caused by settings being too large and endless or too contained (like the church scenes).

They are my main gripes, apart from Vincent not having a phone...

If you say so. I still think that the faces worked out, by and large, very well. Especially with Yuffie, Zack, Tifa, and Jenova (well...for that five or six seconds that you see her actual face...).

The official Yuffie/ Zack/ Aerith/ Jenova/ Cid/ Red XIII/ Barret/ Cait Sith's screen time measurement unit is the millisecond.

I really didn't think the faces looked all that lifeless and creepy. Sure they didn't look 100% human, but I still think they were pretty damn good. However like I said before, I thought the texturing was just about the best I've ever seen, the animation was good, but nothing special.

The thing which impressed me the most was, honestly, Cloud's shirt. I thought the zipper and the texture of the fabric was very, very well done. I was pretty dissapointed by the hands, though...

I watched Advent Children with a few friends.

One of them, who had played FFVIII more than any of the other FF games, thought it was very pretty but didn't really know what was going on, beyond recognizing Cloud and a few other characters.

His girlfriend also thought it was pretty but was utterly lost in terms of storyline.

And their girlfriend also thought it was pretty, but was also, similarly, lost in storyline.

When I watched it with the knowledge of the game that I had, I pretty much agreed with the consensus: it's pretty and it's a good popcorn flick. The 'too little, too late' insertion of the other characters in the Bahamut scene was pretty lame, though. I was hoping to get more Cait Sith than a scene of him riding on Red XIII into battle (which itself was fairly fucked up).

Wow. Reviving a dead thread AND posting off-topic. That's a dandy way to make yourself comfortable here.

And the only game Zack is playable in is Ehrgeiz, which is a fucking terrible fighting game.

I did play the demo. It was pretty odd. Kind of like a MMO but offline thus ruining the appeal somewhat. I guess I'll have to see how the finished product turned out.

However, I am enjoying the manly RPG that said demo accompanied: Dragon Quest 8. I'm about 30 hours in and it has stayed consistanly good so far(though it's a bit of a cheat that you can't warp to all of the towns you've visited). It's a breath of fresh air when Final Fantasy is the only big RPG distributed these days. It actually gives me some Skies of Arcadia vibes(Though I can't say it's quite THAT good. Yet).

To spare myself an aneurysm, my mind has rearranged what J said into something slightly more palatable. As a result, I will respond to my twisted fantasy of what he said.

I'm playing through DQ8 right now as well. It's really amazes me that a game this good came from Square Enix... Though the only reason it's good is probably because it was published by Square, not developed by them.

Speaking of which, the dev of DQ8, Level 5, also developed the upcoming Rogue Galaxy, which has also been garnering a lot of Skies of Arcadia comparisons. This one even has pirates! Space pirates! It's also supposed to have the same kind of... uh, youthful exuberance that made SoA and DQ8 so entertaining. I really think Level 5 should be the official developer of that "Blue Sky in Games" movement that all the pretentious "new games journalism" websites keep promoting.

Also, Dirge of Cerberus comes out in a few weeks, but please, please, DO NOT BUY IT. I saw the ending and the "secret" bonus ending. It sucks. It also sets up more FF7-related sequels and spin-offs... And for that reason alone, you shouldn't support it.

Plus the gameplay sucks.

Space pirates... IN SPACE.

I'm actually really excited by Rogue Galaxy. Unfortunately, I reserve fanboyism until three consecutive good games.

Thus far in Rogue Galaxy I have seen:
A headstrong, eager-to-prove-himself youth
His female companion who I assume to be spunky
A seemingly older and very suave looking gunman
An old guy, possibly a captain (I think)
So yeah, I'm pretty excited. I can't help but wonder if they will have various inhabited planets that adhere to both elements and the major cultures of the world.

You know, Square makes a good game once in a while, Chronno trigger, FFIX, Legend of manna (PLAYSTATION) so I decided to just ignore the bad stuff. Is like we started to complain about every crappy game Nintendo does or hate a Rap star because he is a drug addict or killed someone, its all part of the process. If you find a game company that makes a more than good game every two years it would be a miracle...3D is still harder than 2D.

That's the spanish Playstation that requires castanets to be sounded each time you say its name aloud.
