My main beef with the newer Final Fantasy games is that the replay value is getting worse for each installment. Played the old ones a dozen times, but with an intro sequence that lasts over two hours, I just can't be buggered to replay FFX anytime ever. Sure, the sequel has exceptional replay value since it's basically a game made entirely up of sidequests, but since it's such a very very shitty game, I barely had the stomach to play it once.
Basically agree. I have yet to completely play any of the older ones (sans FFVI) just yet, but the only newer one I really did give a crap about was FFIX.

I think there are a lot of people here who have had the patience to interpret my bastardization of the language.

But I'll concede, as there's no point in posting at all if they're just going to be deleted.

So in other words, they should quit making games? They're pretty much useless with other genres.

Before the FF IX/Spirits Within debacle??? Which "sortta" caused the merger with Enix???

Yeah, most people tend to think that way. And so do I.

The only games I've ever genuinely liked that Square has had a part in are Final Fantasy VI and Super Mario RPG.

No, I don't care for Chrono Trigger (average), Chrono Cross (sucked), Xenogears (bad), or Final Fantasy VII-IX & X-2 (all of which were varying levels of mediocrity). Kingdom Hearts was pretty bad too. I think that's all the Square games I've played... I played a bit of the original Final Fantasy but quit at the town being ransacked by pirates.

I thought Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy X were better than the games I mentioned above, but they're still missing a... something. I'd like to say a heart and a soul, but, I'm not sure how to define what heart and soul are, so I'll just say poorly written or average storywriting. FFX had a pretty good cast of well-defined and developed characters, a good battle system, and having a story that's actually comprehensible and not convoluted compared to it's predecessors, but the story still sucked because of problems with the timing and pacing of story events.

I think I've been burned by Square too many times. The part that's tragic is that there are definitely talented artists and programmers in Square, but that talent is being used in conjuction with bad settings and poorly written scenarios.

Say, speaking of Square, have you people seen the program that allows you to view FFX/X-2 and Kingdom Hearts models? It's an awesome program for looking at if you like 3-D modelling. Here's a pic:

Well, as crazy as it may sound, I think it's possible that we have different tastes. Of course, I've never played Chrono Cross or Xenogears, since they never got released on this continent, so I can't say anything there. Maybe I've just been lucky enough to come across exactly the Square RPGs that appeal to me.

If a good RPG game is one I thoroughly enjoy playing, then I stand by what I typed up there. And if it isn't, then I've obviously got no idea what the hell I'm talking about.

EDIT: That is one damn ugly texture up close.

Another Square RPG I personally liked (and far underrated) was Parasite Eve. Granted, the battle system was too cramped, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Can't say much for Tactics because I only played it for an hour before I gave it back to my friend due to general busy stuff (mainly schoolwork at the time) and for making me a complete idiot in stragedy RPGs.
That said, I think one of the reasons why I never truly appreciated FFX was the fact that it was so damn linear and the characters hardly appeal to me 'cept Auron. Tidus alone just lost it for me.

Agrees, and I'd like to add I'd have far more respect for them if they stop whoring FF7.

I heard the second one was. The first was more action/RPG then anything else. I'm referring to the first one, never tried the second.

You know, if you run your dick through a pencil sharpener a couple of times, it might make it look bigger. DQVIII is awesome, you pussywillow. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone - it is basically a (very, very good) 1991 RPG in 3D - but it isn't convoluted and utterly dysfunctional like every other Square RPG since someone decided that teenage fucking girls should be allowed to play RPG's.

Plus, Trode says funny stuff like "pootling".
I admit that I was exaggerating, but it's not my thing. However, it is better than a lot of the stuff that Square puts out.

Sorry for disagreeing. I dare not question the taste of Gibbon.

Well, actually, the game IS classified as a Survival Horror, thanks to it's "lack" of ammo (*snicker*), "scary" situations and... really, rip-off gameplay from RE. Sure, it had some bonus here and there, but it was still RE in escence.

We know what it was supposed to be and what it actually was, I don't think anyone wants reminding on either points.
