Ultra Seven is by far the most revered iteration of Ultraman. A lot of Japan's big creative minds have attested to having been inspired by it. Here's something from Hideo Kojima's blog, for example.
At the bookstore I bought Ultra-Seven 1967, which came with a DVD. Ultra-Seven heavily influenced my generation's notions of heroism. The television show had a strong social message, giving the show more meaning than one that was merely sensationalist.
I was four years old then, ready for my first feelings of love. I developed a huge crush on Yuriko Hishimi, the actress who played the Ultra-Seven character Anne.

I remember watching Urutoraman when I was in Japan back in '93. I also watched Anpanman, which I see has been unfairly left off the list. Is that because it's an anime and not live-action?
Anpanman is the bomb. It's a receipe for greatness -- I mean, the main character is revitalized during battle by having a fresh loaf of bean paste bread replace his head. Then, of course, there's Baikinman with his crazy cavity-inducing contraptions and his classic catchphrase -- "ha hi fu he ho!!" Truly a gem among children's programming.

I liked Baikinman's headquarters and how he shot boxing gloves from his UFO. But in every respect he was outdone by Dokinchan. Her spaceship was the bomb.

And she had a voice like a banshee. But she wasn't nearly as villainous as Baikinman, so he wins. I mean, she was practically friends with the good guys in every episode I've seen, and wasn't she in love with the white-bread headed guy? Baikinman, on the other hand, is ruthless to a fault.

I'd totally wear a turban 'cept I'm half Palestinian and I live in Utah. Might not be the best choice of wardrobe.

It's too recent to explain Utah. If it had happened, oh, 160 years ago...
