useful information

Post by jenkins »

Does anyone have any advice for other newbies out there like myself? I find it remarkable that within my first two days here, everyone hated me, and I want to try and remey that. And, of course, prevent or reduce the recurrence of such trauma for other new members.

Okay, I'm done.

For starters, don't post topics asking for advice.

But if you, like, really wanna be cool, sharpen a pencil with your vagina.

Everybody here hates everybody else. It's nothing personal. New people just get more of it, because everybody else has heard it all before.

You didn't help your own case at all by being a complete moron regarding the Xbox.

Just don't take anything personally. That's a good lesson for any discussion forum.

People always hate newbies here unless they put forward some very valid points for their first posts. Just don't post too much too, I still have the scars on my arse.

Besides, you could be in a worse position

Two things. First, the number of posts you made upon arriving without saying anything worth reading. Second, you sounded like you were stating fact in those posts rather than your opinion.

Now that you've toned it down, I actually don't mind. But in the end, it doesn't matter too much, so don't worry about it.

Of course, this raises the question, who am I to talk?

The Guide to Internet Forums!
For n00bz, fags, lamers, and those who often misspell.

1. Don't acknowledge yourself as being new. Since there's a post counter, people can tell when you're new. It doesn't need to be pointed out. And introduction threads are pointless.

2. Look at yourself. Who are you? You're some nerdy dude posting on a video game message board. Who do you think posts here? Other nerds. There's nobody here you need to go out of your way to impress. You don't need tips or training. Just don't worry about it.

3. Have a sense of humor about things and about yourself, which you seem to have. Good on ya.

4. Optimism is the new cynicism.

5. Be tactful when starting a thread. If you start a thread and the first post is something stupid, it will be a stupid thread. And you will be rightfully blamed.

6. Also, most people are tired of "internet humor." Or at least I am. But jokes like "pirates and ninjas are cool"; "lolz teh funnay"; and "masturbatory vagina baby-jumper rape skillz" have grown incredibly weary. I don't know, just be aware there's a fine line between funny and annoying.

As you probably will have guessed, I haven't even looked at this until now, hence my next topic...

Reply time!

1. Okay...but I have a habit of restating the obvious.

2. I'll take your word on it.

3. That's been cleared up.

4. That too.

5. This is a little more relevant. Perhaps I should restate: What counts as a stupid topic?

6. I'm equally tired of Internet humor, I was *ahem* genuinely concerned about the pirates and ninjas issue, but I got carried away. I'm good at that. Also, I avoid acronyms like the plague.
