Knuckles Chaotix?

I?ve never gotten to play this game.
But it seems as though the story is very confusing
Knuckles is the guardian of Carnival Island but wait he's the guardian of Angel Island (Floating Island)
I read a Japanese manual story, which said the Master Emerald created the Island. What are Knuckles relations to the other characters, did he know them before the start of the game does he first meant them in the game?
Does this game agree with the Sonic 3 and Sonic Adventure story lines? Who made it? What happens in it?
