The titles of the new episodes, I just noticed, look remarkably more damaging than the first season.

My two main thoughts on this.
1. It was completely and utterly unprofessional and disrespectful how Sega didn't even tell Ryan Drummond that he had been replaced until he himself asked and they were already well into the voice recording process.
2. It's a bad indication of how Sega of America views Sonic - letting a dubbed version of a cartoon based upon their video game series dictate what they do with the actual video game series. The tail shouldn't wag the dog, the dog should wag the tail.

Why would it? Their response to conflicting continuity is to say magic aliens used time travel to cause past events to not happen. I would think they'd just cram in the Sonic X crap with all the other shit they've come up with over the years.Plus, it's really just another reason to hate Sonic X, which has, I think, done more damage to the integrity of the series than any other single thing over the past few years. First point valid... I think that’s what most people are angry about.Crazy Penguin wrote:My two main thoughts on this.

As for the second; it’s not like they've gone out of their way to place elements of Sonic X in the games. It's always been known that Sonic X was a spin off of the games set in a slightly different universe. We've yet to see any of the characters or storylines created especially for Sonic X in the games. All they've apparently done is sign up the same voice actors... one of which needed a new actor for anyway.
The games are independent to the cartoon, it's just that the cartoon is popular and people are confusing the two as one word in the same

They signed up those new voice actors solely to be more consistent with the cartoon. It may only seem like a small thing, it always starts as just a small thing, but the fact remains that Sega of America are letting merchandise dictate what they do with the original video game series itself. It wasn't a good idea in 1993 and it isn't a good idea now.

Well for one thing, Sega of America removed Bonanza Brothers and refused to put the three Bare Knuckle(Streets of Rage) games in Sonic Gems Collection since they seemed to want to avoid a "T" rating for the game and yet, they have no qualms about Shadow the Hedgehog. What was really awful about this move was that many people found out about the news of Bare Knuckles being in the collection via game sites before Sega's official annoucement that they won't be appearing in the US version. Also, they seemed to lie about the reason why the Japanese Sonic CD soundtrack isn't on the American version of SGC(there was conflicting reports saying that there wasn't enough space to add the Japanese OST or that they didn't have the rights to use the Japanese soundtrack in the US version).
I think suddenly removing games and lying to their fanbase is more damaging to a companies' reputation than changing an awful voice cast with another awful voice cast.

That's the thing though. The original voice cast was our awful voice cast. And this voice cast, well, it's just 4Kids voice cast. And I'm sure at least a few people here feel 4Kids has damaged many anime they enjoy, and now it's, to say, they're damaging our games too?Ngangbius wrote:I think suddenly removing games and lying to their fanbase is more damaging to a companies' reputation than changing an awful voice cast with another awful voice cast.
At least, that's how I imagine most of the whiners see it.

I was looking at that and noticed that some of the titles reffered to a "Metallix," you think it's talking about Metal Sonic since that was his name in the UK Sonic Comics? Seems like a strange idea...The titles of the new episodes, I just noticed, look remarkably more damaging than the first season

I never really even gave the voice actors much thought until Heroes, because I had always played with the Japanese voices. But if they aren't going to give us that option, it would be nice if they could at least assemble a decent sounding English cast. I don't want to unfairly generalize, but with only a few exceptions, the voice actors working in anime dubbing circles are usually among the worst in the business. It's like the ghetto of voiceovers, and it's certainly not where Sega should be casting their hottest properties.
But Sonic is no worse off than the rest of the videogame world in that regard. You play a game like Psychonauts -- where the majority of actors are vets from the animation world -- and you realize how terrible most other game voiceovers sound. Even the supposedly "good" ones don't get much further than high-school-play level delivery.

One of the problems with dubbing, especially with something like animation and especially with a language so vastly different from English as Japanese, is that the actors have to work within really strict confines. In general, it takes alot more words to make the same sentence in English than it does in Japanese, so there's the constant issue of timing (and one of the reasons why older anime dubs always sound hyperactively fast). There's also the fact that dubs tend to be very low budget, so the writing is usually piss poor and there will be virtually no direction at all. And the actors, too, are not usually of the higher tier.
By the same respect, though, typical "anime" actors specialize in just that, and while they handle the schtick well enough within the confines of the genre, they are not, as a rule, Shakespearian actors. In all honesty, I think even the Japanese Sonic cast is a bit of a mixed bag. (In particular, I've never cared for Sonic's Japanese voice.)

Some other guy on the Sonicanime.net also contacted Lani Minelli(The former game voice of Rouge), and she confirmed that it was Naka himself who requested the change!
Here's a link to a recording of the voice mail she left him(Though its kind of hard to make out what she's saying):
