A small contribution to the encyclopedia

I don't know if you think this is worth adding, but I thought it'd be nice to list the various colors the Chaos Emeralds have come in over the years. I made this list for myself a few months ago. If you think it's a good idea, I'll even go get some screenshots.

Sonic 1, genesis: Red, yellow, green, blue, magenta/pink, white/silver

Sonic 2, genesis: Red, yellow, green, blue, pink, purple, white/silver

Sonic 3&K: Red, orange, green, indigo, blue, violet, white/silver

Sonic 3d Blast: Red, orange, green, indigo, blue, violet, white/silver

Sonic CD: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, turquoise, magenta

Sonic Fighters: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, maroon/purple, magenta, violet

Sonic Gameworld: My Pico is neatly boxed away and bubble wrapped. If someone else can get this one, I guess I'd like my list to be complete.

Sonic 1, gamegear: All blue

Sonic 2, gamegear: All blue

Sonic Spinball (both): All blue

Chaotix(rings): Orange, green, indigo, blue, magenta/pink, purple

Drift 1: Green, Yellow, Red

Drift 2: Courses: Purple, White, Blue. Emeralds: Blue, yellow, orange, red, white/silver, indigo

Sonic Chaos: Blue, yellow, green, white/silver, magenta/pink, red

Labyrinth:
1: Post S&K shape, light blue
2: Orange/red
3: Yellow/orange
4: Diamond shaped(2 sharp points, top and bottom)Fading between blue and white
Red, yellow, green, blue, and indigo are shown in the manual.

Sonic triple trouble: Red, orange, yellow, blue, gray

G-Sonic: Red, yellow(orange in the opening), green, blue, white/silver

Sonic R: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, magenta, silver/white

Tails Adventure: Red, yellow, green, blue, purple, white

Sonic Pocket Adventure: Blue, green, red, yellow/amber, magenta, silver/gray

Sonic Adventure (and every game since, except Sonic Battle in which they're all green): Red, yellow, green, indigo, blue, purple, white/silver

I think my designation between violet and purple is that violet is deeper or darker.

You forgot the yellow emerald in S3K.

So the Super Emerald is a different color than the Chaos Emerald? Strange. I never noticed. Though that yellow has a tint of orange.

No. There is an eighth yellow emerald.

Y'know the Chaos Emerald display screen at the end of Special Stage mode in Sonic Jam? From what I recall the yellow/orange emerald would be yellow for some games and orange for others. Perplexing really.

I think the yellow/orange emerald also changed from Sonic 3 to Sonic & Knuckles, but I might have to check.
Sonic 2, gamegear: All blue
Are you sure? I seem to recall them having colour in the Master System version.

I think a friend of mine managed to find the Chaos Emerald texture files from SADX (PC), which had the colours in the file names. I'll ask him what they were when I get the chance.

And on the subject of the encyclopedia I must say I'm very impressed with the new format, particularly the character design evolution bits.

I think one or two ammendments could be made though:

Amy Rose

"Her nickname is "Rosy the Rascal", though it was only ever designated in the Sonic CD instruction manual, and has sort of faded from the continuity."

The nickname was also used in Sonic the Fighters (where with other characters it would say "the Hedgehog" etc).

Image

Metal Sonic

" Metal took on this appearance after absorbing power from the 7 Chaos Rings in Chaotix."

There were only six Chaos Rings to be found in the Special Stages in Chaotix. Metal Sonic seemed to be powered solely by the giant ring that Eggman uses (probably the "Special Ring" or whatever that was mentioned in the manual's prologue).

If memory serves me correctly, if you attain 1-5 Chaos Rings the giant ring kind of vaporises them. I don't have any save states to check just now though. But that's not particularly relevent until we get up to the Chaotix entries.

Also, in the Tornado entry it might be worth mentioning its appearances in Sonic Shuffle and Sonic Advance, which were released post-Sonic Adventure.

The Tornado was also in SPA for the NGPC.

And since the update is on the subject of scientific accuracy, Metal Sonic's maximum torque should be listed as either 7.54kpm, 7.54kg-w m or 73.89Nm. "kp" being Kiloponds or "kg-w" being Kilogram-weight, ie the force a kilogram mass exerts on the surface of Earth due to gravity. Or you can use Newtons which is more generally accepted anyway. To describe torque as a mass is just technically wrong.

That Bernoulli thing always bothered me. I could never be arsed to look it up, but I always thought Bernoulli was more of a fluids guy. And I remember reading that one of the fathers stole material from one of his sons or something. Anyway...

Anyway, with all these measurements about Metal Sonic, you think some physics genius like Light Speed should be able to calculate Metal Sonic's top speed or rate of acceleration. Hell it shouldn't be hard given that you have his mass, and maximum power output. You could at least come up with a theoretical value in a vacuum environment.

I was going to make a new thread about this, but I'll just post it here: Gibbs, that is perhaps the greatest write-up on Metal Sonic ever done. You really went all out on that.

I can confirm that the Chaos rings do disintigrate on the dark ring if you don't have them all. And you were right about Sonic 2 GG. I'm ashamed I didn't remember off hand. Their colors are:

Blue, yellow, (the third one's underwater, so it's hard to tell. It look pearl, but it might be the indigo one), silver/white, red, green.

For the record it actually lists the colors in the Japanese Sonic 1 manual: ieroh (yellow), pinku (pink), bruh (blue), gurihn (green), reddo (red), howaito (white). The "ho" that precedes "waito" has always been peculiar to me. If you say it sounds right, but I was curious why "waito" didn't sufficiently convey "white," unless there is a subtle difference between the Japanese "wa" and our "double-you" that makes the augmentation of an "eish" necessary.

I guess I'll get rid of all those "/silver"s then. It's called white in at least 2 other places and never called silver.

Fixed the Amy and Metal Sonic profiles with Penguin's corrections. It's been light years since I played Chaotix and I totally don't know what the giant ring is called or what its relation to the Chaos Rings are, so I just called it the "giant Ring". When I get to the Chaotix part of the museum, I'll sit down and try to figure it out definitively.

As for Metal's maximum torque measurement, I copied it exactly as it is in the manual, Kg-m. It's possible it was a typo there... I guess I should add a side note pointing that out.

Also, wasn't it the Tornado 2 in SPA and Shuffle? And where was the Tornado in Advance, I don't remember?

So speaking of the update, what is this Tashiro Masashi no Princess ga Ippai game? I found a rom but the controls were so terrible I that didn't play it long enough to find out just how full of princesses it was.

I dunno. I haven't played past the first few screens, either. I just picked a random, obscure old game for a screenshot.

I looked it up at Wikipedia, and apparently this Tashiro Masashi guy is an 80's/90's TV personality. Supposedly he's been in legal trouble as of late for peeping, including a male bath, which strikes me as the most redundant crime you could possibly commit. Why didn't he just go inside?

Incidentally, the game was made by Hal.

It's definitely the Tornado in SPA. The sprite is even done in the SA-style version of it rather then the classic-style from 2-3K.

The Metal Sonic's torque thing probably wasn't a typo. Often times people use mass and force-weight interchangeably. It's only technically incorrect.

He was also Time Magazine's person of the year (I think in 2001) for a little while, thanks to japanese 2ch users coming up with some sort of script.

The red Tornado was in Sonic Pocket Adventure's Sky Chase and ending. Big_smile posted some screencaps of Shuffle's ending some months ago, and it shows Tails working on the red Tornado in his workshop and then taking it for a fly. The red Tornado appears in Sonic Advance's ending, the whole overplayed Sonic 2 ending schtick again.

There's also the red Tornado skin for the Cyclone in SA2's 2 player mode, if that counts for anything.

Sonic Advance 3 and Sonic Heroes all feature purple Tornados, it's hard to tell whether they're supposed to be the Tornado 2 or Tornado III.

M_EM_PURPLE
M_EM_RED
M_EM_SKY
M_EM_WHITE
M_EM_YELLOW

M_EM_BLACK (when Chaos has drained their energy)

Sky, huh? I wonder if that's what they really call it.

I've confirmed the emerald colors in 3 and S3&K. It is indeed orange in both games.

Image

On the emerald display screen it looks more yellowish, but the game select screen shows it's clearly orange. The yellow emerald Chris was talking about is found in the extra special stages accessed from the level select. There are no sprites for either the yellow chaos or super outside of the special stage.

Just like to say that the encyclopedia is awesome in my books. I always preferred Mecha Sonic to Metal Sonic and it was cool to see his evolution stages.

Which made me wonder, did you ever think of posting the evolution shots of characters in-game(I'm thinking Sonic, mainly)? For example: The Sonic 3 concept design is pretty similar to the previous ones, but in the actual game he's completely different.

Just a suggestion.

All this talk of Super Emeralds makes me want to go play S3K again. Thank God I foresaw this eventuality and left my MegaDrive plugged in.

Just a thought: everyone's talking about the character evolution thing in the Encyclopaedia. Hasn't that been there since the "character profile" days, before GG! made the Encyclopaedia? If not, it's certainly been there a while because I remember it from ages ago. Do you guys just not read the site, or something?

There's something missing in Metal Sonic's bio...the fact that he just decided he was the "real" Sonic.

When I first found this site, the encyclopedia had been started (although very recently, it seemed).

Anything beforehand is news to me.
