No, it's just painful to see certain things. I take my Sonic seriously, I'll have you know.

The most hilarious part being that there was no explanation given for the other characters.
I could believe that a giant crazy energy space beam would mutate Sonic, giving him longer spines and green eyes. I just couldn't get a handle on why it would give him shoe buckles.

I mean, couldn't they have just said that the beam burned Sonic's shoes, forcing him to get a new pair? They don't even have the common sense to just ignore the shoe issue... no, they call attention to it! "Gee whiz, Sonic, that energy beam gave you longer spines, green eyes and buckles on your shoes!" Gah!

That is pure gold. And had nobody ever drawn buckles on Sonic's shoes in the comic before then? Not even Spaz?

It gets even better then that. At the time, Archie had started this major explanation for how Sonic travels in "zones" (which are actually different dimensions in the comics as opposed to just different places around the world). A couple fans wrote in believing that the green-eyed Sonic was not the real Sonic, but an alternate reality Sonic that had taken his place, and that would be the big issue 75 surprise.

Consequently they never explained how Evil Sonic (yes that is an actual character) got green eyes and longer spines.

The buckles were an official thing I believe but so few pictures have them. I hate the new designs of Espios gear, I prefer the old boots, not the new recoloured Sonic sneakers.

When they're responsible for the inadvertent development of a splintered gene pool that thinks Sonic is about guns, yeah. Heck, in Sonic 1 even ROBOTNIK wasn't about guns.

I didn't go into town today. I might check TOMORROW if I'm still arsed. Strnagely, I only feel slightly arsed when I'm sitting here staring at the screen. Soon as I get up, wham, couldn't be arsed.

But we'll see.

Man that was the wierdest mini-rant I've ever made.

The only good thing I've heard of Archie is the Super Sonic vs Hyper Knuckles fight. I haven't seen any other references to Knuckles transformations since S3/K. It takes the piss.

I think it's pretty obivous. They wanted each character to have their own unique "super form" rather then everyone being Super (character name). But if you think that's bad, let's not forget about Ultra Sonic, Hyper Tails, Solar Sonic, Eco Sonic, and Polar Sonic.

Archie is so wacky. They were worried that people would think the different coloured Chaos Emeralds were too similar to kryptonite, so to correct this they made them ALL green. Smooth!

Ironically the average kid wouldn't even know that there's been kryponite that wasn't green.

They're entitled to make mistakes in the art. Once Knuckles had no tail. But that's fine. It was just one panel.

In Sonic's multiple consecutive runs around the globe that led to his fantastic buckle-transformation, the Super Emerald strapped to his back transformed him into Solar Sonic while he was running through arid regions, Polar Sonic while he was running through cold regions, and Eco Sonic while he was running through jungles. I stopped reading the comic around #79 and stopped reading Dan Drazen's issue reviews somewhere around #125, so I don't know if those forms ever showed up again. Although, considering how desperate they get for material these days--like the dramatic return of a character who appeared in one issue eight years ago and no one really wanted to see come back anyway--it wouldn't surprise me.

And for the record, Evil Sonic was always one of my favorite characters. The concept of an evil version of Sonic that is identical to him except for some boots, sunglasses, and a leather jacket just appeals to me in a really dumb way. It's too bad they probably don't write him in anymore now that the rival position has been officially filled by Shadow. Unlike Shadow, who has all this existential emotional oh-god-MARIA baggage to get through, Evil Sonic's only motivation was to ride his motorcycle across the Cosmic Interstate, pop into Sonic's universe, and beat the crap out of him every once in a while. And unlike Metal Sonic, it wasn't out of some weird fascination with being the "true Sonic"; he was just a dick.

God, that backwards issue was terrible. I stopped buying them for good after #109, myself. Dan's reviews are more than enough to get me depressed each month, along with browsing them in newsagents and retching. It doesn't really need to be said, but Archie makes a mockery of all Sonic universes, SatAM most of all. There's only been a handful of interesting and dare I say GOOD ideas during its run - mostly from the Knuckles comic line - but almost every one was badly utilized or just plain screwed up. Writing, consistant art, characterizations, plot, editing... The comic fails on every level. "Professionals" my ass.

Evil Sonic, though... yeah, he was born in a time when not even the management took the comic seriously. There's something about Sonic being a juvenile delinquent that's oddly compelling. But that's probably from the fanfic "When A Bunnie Meet A Bunnie" which took the idea up a few notches.

I have all but four of the Knuckles comics, and I have to say that they are actually pretty decent. The art is consistent, the storyline makes sense, has continuity, purpose and direction. The main cast of characters is all SEGASonic (though the supporting characters and universe still isn't.). And to be honest Enerjak and the Dark Legion are pretty awesome villians in comparison to the SatAM style Robotnik.

Yeah, it was much more dramatic than the Sonic comics, and in a good way. Especially good was that arc that focuses on the Chaotix--particularly Charmy--as they try to bust the guys behind the reopening of the Newtrogic High Zone amusement park and the sale of candy laced with Lemon Sundrop Dandelion, which is how you say LSD in a comic book for all ages. The villain (Downtown Ebony Hare, the pimp gangsta rabbit) was pretty dumb, but everything else was great.

If anybody's actually interested, I've got scans of 0-102, all the mini series, all the specials, all the super specials, the crossovers, and Knuckles 1-16. I would've had more, but the torrent site hosting them has been down for weeks. AIM me one day at Frieza2000XTC if you want them.

I've never actually read any of them, BTW. And this topic hasn't exactly encouraged me to start. Someday, though.
