What, you mean like they did in Sonic Heroes?
Because we all know how well that turned out.
So you're saying let the guns become generic to the point where they become a boring and unexciting element even MORE QUICKLY than before?
See, I can take things out of context, too.

I think this will sufficiently answer your question. Simply put, the game sucks in everything except in its audio qualities.

It's not really that bad, but it's just such a forgetable game. Superficially it's a Sonic game: you run fast and do stunts and spin around and shit. But it has no soul. It's the first major Sonic release that we have no idea where it takes place. Sonic Team couldn't even be bothered to think up the name for a new island or give us some generic "adventure fields." It had some good ideas, most notabley the casino levels, but horrible execution, most notabley the fact that you can't see the whole pinball board on the casino levels.

The problem with Sonic Heroes was it was created too soon. I don't mean they rushed it, but it was way too soon to try out the idea. Sonic Team had to perfect Sonic's 3D engine first, then it'd be safe to try out the idea. Of course, if Sonic Heroes was 2D, it'd probably be a helluva good game. Still I must confess, Sonic Heroes was a decent entry to my collection. I can only hope Sonic Team either polishes up Sonic in 3D or goes back to 2D.

The audio qualities sucked too. The music is the worst Senoue has ever written and the characters just won't shut up.

Although you bring up some good points chris and Machenstein, I think the main problem with Sonic Heroes was that the level designs were utterly atrocious. All of the levels are essentially elevated space tracks with the occasional on-rails sections like in Sonic Adventure 2, but made worse with the fact that the entirety of the levels were surrounded by the killer pits of doom. Given the small amount of running space and the linearity of said levels, the platforming was completely dragged to the ground. Honesty, rolling down a pathway trying to avoid fatal pitfalls whilst simultaneously fighting with dodgy movement physics is not what I would consider fun gaming. The switching characters gimmick was pretty ill conceived as well; it didn’t make the game more exciting to have to use specific characters to get past certain obstacles, or to collect power cores to destroy Eggman's robots more easily, all it did was slowed the game down.

I still have no idea why this game is considered by some as a 3D version of "classic Sonic". Graphically maybe, but the gameplay of Heroes was so completely against the design mythologies of the original games that in reality, there should be no comparison between the two whatsoever.

I'll agree with the charracters being annoying to listen too, but I still think the music was quite good. Well, better than SA2 at least.

Yes, Bingo Highway raped me in the ass repeatedly. Rolling down a brigthly colored ramp only to fall into a cleverly placed pit of death is not my idea of fun.

And the Special Stages were awful.

Better a half-pipe than a whole-pipe, they say. Though the special stages would've been cooler if the camera rotated with you as you ran upside-down the pipe in an F-Zero manner. I'm with everyone here about the physics.

Question, why does everyone seem to hate Sonic Adventure 2's music? Sure, it wasn't diverse, but it was decent stuff. Unless you somehow hate rock or something.

The haunted levels and the last level were the only ones I saw as really cheap. The others were as you said, just boring. I like the concept of Bingo Highway though and a lot of it is fun. The pits on the actual highway part aren't to hard to avoid. The only problem I have with those levels is the nasty camera you get while trying to play pinball.

The first two levels are also pretty decent, but you get more space to move around in those then any other level. I agree that the level design on a whole was pretty horrid. SA had awesome level design and it had it's fair share of pits, but they also took advantage of the z-axis in that game.

I thought the Sonic Adventure rock music was waaaay cheesier than Sonic Adventure 2s. :)

I don't like the majority of the character themes from all of the 3D games. But I thought the level music in SA2 was great... for everyone other than Knuckles. The original's level music was better, but SA2's was still solid.

But Heroes'? It's completely forgettable, repetetive, incredibly cheesy generic videogame music. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single tune. It was a massive step backwards, in my opinion.

Hey! I liked Bug!

I never said such a thing. In fact, I still haven't forgiven Naka for ruining any chance I had to play it.
THANK YOU!! Finally somebody who sees things the way I do with this! I'm sorry I grouped you in with popular concensus.

Oh, and why does the name "Anon" sound like one I've heard on Sonic Vegemite before?

I intensly dislike Sonic Heroes because it was such a dissapointment. I wanted to like the game. I honestly tried to find something good about it. The only part of the game I actually enjoyed was Espio's invisibility technique, because you could just skip all the bad guys, and you didn't have your hangers-on while he was invisible. That was it.

After playing through Heroes long enough to get all emblems, I found that I couldn't remember a single level tune. They have no personality. After SA2, however, I could and still can remember at least half of the level tunes. And I liked them.

If nothing else, Sonic music should at least be memorable. Whether rock or techno or even those rap tunes, I believe that Sonic music must have definitive personality to be worthy of a Sonic game.

Ok, ok. I got it on the second post!

I agree with most of the bad points, but I think the greatest one is about the (lack of) level design. That includes the lack of different paths, the abundance of doom pits and grind rails.

I actually liked all that talking during the levels, except that they usually repeated themselves a lot. And Big. Big sounded like a 2 year old dumb kid with a crayon stucked on it's nose.

Not battling the real classic Metal Sonic sucked too, but when I played I was so glad that he actually appeared and transformed to his classic form in the endeing cutscene that I didn't even care about it. The cutscenes were really nice and very well made. And the T-1000 metal thingie was nice too.

Other thing I enjoyed were the Chaotix. Their story was kinda unique. I mean, of course it was obvious right from the start that they were talking to Eggman, but I enjoyed the whole idea. The characters were very nice too, and Charmy Bee had an annoying voice, but he was a nutcase, I liked his personality.
Something nobody mentioned though, is the come back of the "2 Acts and a Boss" stages.

I know the game has a lot of flaws, lacks a lot of stuff, has a stupidly too easy special stage, but I guess I really want to like this game, which makes me pay much more attention to the parts I enjoyed than the ones I didn't.

That's probably why I'll never play Rail Canyon again.

Okay. You guys can burn me now. I'll probably weight as much as a duck anyway...

It's a work of art to be aware of the flaws and at the same time remain optimistic. For that, my applause goes to you, Opa-Opa. Everyone, I consider you follow this multicolored space-ship with wings from a 1986 Master System game's example. Opa-Opa has displayed true reasoning, looking at both ways between the flaws and the credability.

The last level sounds very similar to the 24 theme song.
