God Really Hates the Dubbers

Post by NeoShogun_Zero »

I am really pissed off by all these American companies who take great anime and ruin them with awful "voice-actors" The true solution to this problem is to just have them subtitle it and keep the original talent in their proper places. Good talent can make even the gayest of anime minisculely better; and something about these Americans just doesn't click for me.

On a completely unrelated subject, who here wants That's My Bush! on DVD?

I'd argue something dealing with this, but it's late and I need sleep...

Virtually all anime DVD's come with the option to watch it in Japanese with English subtitles. In all honesty, the problem of bad English dubs has been incredibly blown out of proportion by the rabid anime fans; it’s wether the show is actually of good quality that should be the main incentive to watch it, not about the voice acting.

Umm, pretty much every anime release out there has a Japanese with English subtitle option. Dubs are only produced to boost sales and for potential television broadcasts, and I don't have a problem with the dubbing for most properties that are televised. The only company you can really criticize for this is 4Kids Entertainment.

(Yes, I know they've released a few YGO and Shaman King DVDs uncut and "dubtitled", but those releases were purely experimental and are far from a priority for them. It doesn't change the fact that the company's main objective is to apply a scorched earth policy to their titles and market them to a Saturday morning audience. One Piece is pretty much screwed forever.)

I can't say I'm very into anime anymore, but I am a big fan of foreign (and particularly Asian) live action cinema and simply can't imagine watching dubbed versions of any of them.

Just because it's a dub doesn't mean it's automatically bad. Trigun, baby.

I'm just glad 4Shame was denied the Naruto license.

Yes, I want That's My Bush! on DVD.
No, I don't think all dubs are bad. I like to hear things in my own language. If I wanted to read, I'd get out a book, not watch television.

Speaking of which, Naruto is gonna be dubbed by Viz, which my friend is pissed about, *shrugs* but its better than 4Kids. And isn't Funimation in charge of 4Kids' DVD and video releases now?

"One of these days Laura, I'm gonna punch you in the face!"

He's the President in residence
He's kind of in charge
He's got the whole country saying
"That's my Bush"
Life is hard, that's the price of fame
When you're President everyone knows your name
Hey, what's that thing?
It's my Bush!
I can't believe he's actually in the White House
That's our man!
That's my Bush!

I don't have any problems with dub. Hell, I can accept horrible dubbed voice acting if the emotions is done right. I actually wake up on Saturday mornings just to watch dubbed Sonic X (among others) which I have no problem with (I swear people are blowing it way out of porportion just because Fox Box became 4Kids TV, it's just a freakin' name change). I'm aware of why some dubs made some changes here and there and I'm also aware some of the changes they made that make absolutely no sense, but in most cases, I can't watch the original because it's not out on DVD for America and I can't even order them online. Not to mention there are still plenty of good dubs out there.

I can deal with dubs if they get the original's theme/dialog down as closely as possible.

Which does not happen for most kid's shows.

Just because loads of dubs suck doesn't mean subs don't. Read or Die has an excellent dub, but the subtitles are completely uninspired and don't match the spoken words at all.

Then there's Akira. For years I've been wondering why Kaneda's girlfriend yelled "Why've you changed!" at him outside the school. Now that I have a dubbed DVD, "What the heck has gotten into you!" makes sooo much more sense.

The only case I've ever heard of that happening was with the original Dragon Ball on CN. FUNi retained the original music and used a bit of credits music that was actually a pretty close translation of the original.

Now that I think about it, the Blue Water dub of GT over in Britain also had an English dub of "Dan Dan".

So... yeah, that's still not 'most' shows, but it is an example!

Well I'm not into Japanese shows, the only one I watch being Sonic X (in Japanese with fansubs), so I wasn't really thinking about TV stuff only. For example Shenmue II had a pretty decent dub sticking pretty close to the original (the NPC voices are a different matter; their actors deserved to be kicked in the face). At least according to a fan in Japan who's played both versions. Also I played the Dreamcast subbed version and all the text was put together really well.

I don't see how the first half of this sentence makes sense with the second half.

Now that I think about it, Sonic X seems to be the only anime I'm watching so far. The other cartoons are all here in America.

The fact is that, without dubs, anime wouldn't sell remotely as well as it does, and none of your favorite shows would ever be brought Stateside because publishers wouldn't see any money in it.

I know rabid anime fans who spend hundreds on anime a month and only watch dubs. I look at them funny.

There shouldn't be any problems with the Naruto dub. There's even a chance that they'll try and get it to air with a TV-PG on Toonami, which is good since I can't imagine how the show could ever be edited down to Y7. Of course, it'll probably run uncut in Canada anyway, so whatever.

FUNi only distributes 4Kids properties. The discs are still produced by 4Kids.
