DVD troubles

Post by Locit »

I recently (as in today) recieved a dvd player from samsung. Using my old gi-normous gold plated-etc. high quality video cables, I hooked it up. Now everyting is a healthy shade of pink. I hearby formally ask the rest of the GHZ with its vast array of technical knowledge to help me by suggesting various solutions. Solutions that don't include drinking.

Check and make sure that your cables are plugged in all the way.

First thing that came to mind. Unfortunately it didn't work.

Get drunk, it makes everything look better. Either that or take off your pink glasses.

How old are your gi-normous gold-plated high-quality video cables? Did you get them just for this new DVD player?

Is your DVD player new?

Did you connect the cables properly?

Or some combination of the two.

That's funny, because my mom just got a DVD player as well in the mail today.

Btw, are they R G & B cables? If so, did you plug them in the correct jack?

The cables are about a year and a half old.
The player is indeed quite new, it is a replacement for an old one and takes up about 1/4 the space. Disturbingly thin, really.
Yes I did connect properly, and checked over and over again. Through fiddling I can get black and white and blue, but not normal colors.

Possible. In the player, my tv, or the cables?

Watch something that's already mostly pink would be my first suggestion . . .

Could be in any of those. Did your old DVD player work well with the TV? If so it could be the DVD player, or then again, maybe the TV doesn't work well with the DVD player, or it could be the cables. So yeah, it could be any of those you mentioned

Oh, I just remembered, is the DVD player going through any other device like a VCR or something?

Nope.

My old player worked well with the tv, but something hit it at some point and it was always captioned, no matter what.

Also, my tv is only about 6 months old, and its HD formatted.

Did everything work fine with your old DVD player? It might just be some weird compatibility issue with a brand new DVD player and the old cables.

You said you hit your TV?

It's possible the ports on your TV are damaged.

Wow, I should read all posts before blabbing on, huh?

What Holic said. Especially since
it was always captioned, no matter what.
Obvious damage, unfortunately. :\

Are the ports the cables are being plugged into RGB ports or AV ports? AV ports will tend to be colored white/red/black while RGB ports would most likely be colored red/green/blue.

Assuming they are AV ports on both ends, plug in the cables one at a time. One cable should be the video entirely, one cable should be left audio channel, and one cable should be the right audio channel.

If that doesn't work, try hitting the TV.

The DVD player was damaged, not tv. Dammit CE, I plugged them in right. Anyways, I've decided to use the old fashioned AV wires till I get new HD ones. Thanks all.

Don't spend too much money on them; it really doesn't matter if you get Monster cables or the cheap ones Radioshack sells, you'll get about the same quality.

Oh, you were trying to use component cables? What was wrong with them?

And yeah, Netaku's right. Don't waste extra money on those.
