A russian Sonic website is reporting that Sonic Runners is returning as "Sonic Runners Adventure". They've included 'box' art (which could be fake, especially as there is something off about it when compared to art for recent games).
It's allegedly being made by Gameloft who have done Sonic mobile games in the past (although not recently so it seems odd to see them back).
I personally hope it's true. I loved the original (although Sonic Team messed up the free-2-play stuff which spoiled most of the charm). In the hands of someone more competent with mobile, it might turn out well (I know Gameloft doesn't have the best rep, but they couldn't be any worse that Sonic Team).

It's true!! TimmiT on Sonic Retro found this:
http://support.gameloft.com/OnlineAndSo ... ction/689/
There seems to be a vast number of improvements:
You no longer need to be online to play
Characters can be purchased with rings (no roulette)
Characters levels are capped at 5 (instead of 10 from the original)

As someone who didn't get a chance to check this out the first time around, I'm pleased! I wonder how they're going to roll out the story content?

Neat-o bandito. The original game was surprisingly fun, but yeah, hopefully the powers that be have cut back on the ads and the arbitrary waiting times.

So the old rumour mill suggests that this might not be the Runners we all love, but a brand new Boom game that was shelved when the Wii U title bombed and later rebranded into Runners.
I find it a bit odd that Sega would hold back a Boom mobile game but still release a new 3DS one, especially when they did release the Sonic Dash 2: Boom. We will see..

Re: Run back
Stuff like the ability to change the camera angle mentioned in the FAQ really suggested that they'd be making some substantial changes. There was nothing like that in the original, was there?

Yup, there's a lot of original content in this new version. TimmT made a list on Sonic Retro:
So this content could have been stuff Sonic Team were working on before the game got canned.
Although Sonic Team were continually adding new features to the original (And in the process, they broke compatibility with the old special events, which is why the one-off story episodes were never repeated). There are moments where the camera angle changes to showcase stunts
Characters are now unlocked through the story and with rings, no longer through gacha roulette bullshit
There are special stages where you fly and collect rings
Two different types of levels: Finite, Looped, and Infinite.
There are goals like "Finish the level with no damage" and "Collect all Rings"
Achievements are a thing in this game

Didn't even get an official announcement, but the game is out now on Android in some territories. Apparently, it costs some money up front this time around.
From a purely aesthetic standpoint, it's ages behind the original.

Yeah, for some reason they felt the need to redo the graphics:

It seems to be a new story as well, but I could be misremembering.
It can be purchased for 50 Czech Koruna!:
