I don't think this is an April fools, but it looks like Sega of America's new Los Angeles offices are going to be the central hub of everything Sonic. Takashi Iizuka is heading back to the U.S. to oversee development of new games in the franchise. There's also a new chief brand officer: Ivo Gerscovich.
This isn't the first time Sonic Team relocated to the USA. Iizuka's previous stint in America brought as games such as Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog.

Certainly nothing but good times ahead.
It sounds like the goal is to have a consistent level of quality while still allowing other developers to make Sonic games. So they aren't fully bringing in the reigns on non-Sonic Team games. They're just trying to prevent them from getting below modern Sonic Team quality levels.
