The Hedgehog Engine is just a lighting engine. I dunno why you keep referring to it as though its anything more.

If it does get a 3DS release, I wouldn't be surprised if it also showed up on the Wii. Just like how Sonic 1 & 2 had Master System versions.

My wish is about to come true. According to a SEGA sales projections report for 2011, Sonic Generations will have a PC release (and a 3DS one too):

Binary Domain looks like it has potential. I hadn't heard of it until now.

Man, that was about a zillion times better than the trailer they showed before. The old trailer made it look like an unfunny, unintentional parody of western FPS games, whereas now, without introducing us to any hateful protagonists, it actually looks pretty awesome.

Presence where? In any case, I hope not. I don't need unnecessary DRM...

Here's a new playthrough of the entire classic Sonic stage. Not gonna lie... it looks pretty much perfect. Good job, Sega, on finally successfully replicating your own physics engine! I can't believe it only took eight other 2D Sonic games to get there.

And here's the full modern Sonic stage. Spoiler: he falls into a pit!

(Seriously, though, it looks fun enough too in it's own kind of braindead fashion.)

Around the 2:15 mark, Sonic very obviously snaps into a scripted loop sequence, Sonic Adventure style. IN 2D.

The game looks phenomenal (keyword: looks), but still does enough things wrong here and there that stick out and prevent me from wanting to spend money on it. So yeah, let's hope it's on the PC too.

I'm actually surprised at how well the classic-modern dynamic works out. Not only do they play very differently (which was to be expected), but the way modern Sonic interacts with the stage offers a totally different perspective on the environment, without feeling schizophrenic. I didn't think the minimalist approach of the classic games and the over-the-top presentation of the modern style would work together so well. My only complaint is that a lot of the recycled stuff has kind of lost its impact. Did anyone not see the item box in the palm tree coming a mile away? How many times can they remake that orca chase? Etc.

I think we may have a contender for the prettiest stage in a Sonic game since the classic era. Shame it's a remake.

Also: what's up with how the music loops in Classic mode? Are they still using red book audio?

But yeah, that looks absolutely loverly. Maybe I should finally break down and get a new PC...

Looking pretty great. There are still quite a few "I'm just boosting" moments in the m. segment, but at least there was some platforming at the end. I laughed at comments like "as you can see, modern sonic's levels are not just all boosting" and the fact that he died during a rail sequence. Still nary a splash when sonic hits the water. Come on ST, go that extra mile.

I never liked Modern gameplay, but for the first time it looks rather interesting to me, they had to put (unnecessary) QTEs in there...

If its on Steam - and that's not confirmed, but it'd be daft for them not to - it'd be happy smiley Valve DRM. Steam/DRM or not, a PC release is a PC release, and that's damn good news for somebody who can't afford shelling out for a console/TV/TV licence when it's released.

I completely agree with you (since I don't have any console aside from the Mega Drive), but I don't buy a game with DRM like Steam in it.

Reposts of the playthroughs:
Classic
Modern

This looks super fun! Barring a total breakdown in the remaining stages' quality and the demo sucking out loud it's as close to a sure buy for me as any game can be this early in the rollout. I've heard the sentiment from some old school fans that they aren't buying the game because it has modern-style levels, which strikes me as a pretty backwards way to go about getting what you want. Do you think not buying the game with half its stages featuring classic gameplay will make Sega more likely to do a completely classic game in the future? Or do you think it will discourage them from pursuing it further because no one was interested in the classic gameplay the one time they brought it back? Hop on the logic train, people.

I think those were the ones from GameTrailers: classic and modern.

I'd also like to acknowledge Radrappy's comments about Adventure 2, the game is buggy in some spots (namely Crazy Gadget's last mission, which I'm trying to ace and is driving me up the wall now) and the homing attack doesn't even fucking home in on enemies sometimes.

And I've been watching some Sonic 4 vids over at pokecapn's. It's not a horrible game, just horribly, completely by-the-numbers, unoriginal and nothing like the classic ones, but very playable indeed. So I take that back, too.

Yes, it's quite logical to purchase a half-shitty game with the prospect that the next game won't be as shitty. Not that this is my particular sentiment, but I can see where they're coming from. No matter how you put it in perspective, you're still paying full price for a game of which half is something you don't like. Compare with Sonic Adventure 2 haters.

Fixed.

To be more precise, compare to Sonic Unleashed, which this is structurally a sequel of: one half people jizz over more than the other. Both ended up included haphazardly and neither very fun. Sorry, i'm not going to be fooled twice.
