Le amorphous matter deux

Now if there's one thing de Blob did right it was amusing light-hearted action and likable characters. I think this trailer shows they know what made it worthwhile and are thankfully staying the course.

If there was anything de Blob did not get right was compelling gameplay. Touching absolutely everything wasn't fun; it was an OCD simulator. The ways in which this franchise can branch at this point is infinite and I really hope they have some idea of where to take it.

That said, this one is multiplatform, and that's never a good thing. Never a damning thing either, but I think it leaves developers reaching for ways to make it work for different hardware rather than focusing on making it just work really well.

I can't say I've actually played the original de Blob, but after those trailers I may well work to rectify this..

I really enjoyed the first deBlob! I totally get why some people would find scouring the city to paint every last building to be tedious, but personally, that kind of thing is totally up my alley.

But what is NOT up my alley is having to play a game for upwards of TWO HOURS before you can save your progress! Doing a completionist run of one of De Blob's stages usually takes about that long, and there's no way to save part way through a stage. I almost never play games for that long in one sitting, and I certainly don't want to COMMIT to doing that before I start playing! That was a deal breaker for me, and the reason I never got through the second half of the game.

Yeah, I think it did have more to do with the time investment than anything. Even minimalist runs could go up to 45 minutes in later stages!

Also, I just learned there was an official OST exclusive to Circuit City. Kinda wish I knew that; the soundtrack was sublime.

The first game had a lot going for it conceptually, but I think the developers either got really lazy or became uninspired at some point. There lack of mission variety, the slow reveal of new kinds of enemies, and the meandering length of the levels really knocked the wind out of the experience. The gameplay was hallow and failed to evolve as the game progressed. It was an okay game, but not really something I'd recommend playing.

It seemed like the developers didn't have enough ideas for a satisfying full game with the first one, so a sequel is kind of surprising. I'd like to see it fleshed out more, but I've yet to see anything that shows the gameplay will have much more meat on it.

Ye gods, this. De Blob shows there is such a thing as too much content.
