Perfect right? You hate the rush games if memory serves.

I got the impression that was more about people being potentially confused by the presence of both.
It seems like everyone hates them except reviewers and me so eh (they have 82 and 78 respectively on metacritic, for reference)

I wonder if this means they'll be liquidated; I've been meaning to check them out but the Advance series left such bad aftertaste in mouth despite fair-to-good reviews.

Re: All-new 2D Sonic rolling out in 2010
I thought the second one was alright for a handheld game, but the first Rush title is Sonic 06 quality.
And overall I do not think using Metacritic to decide which games are good is a sound plan. Sonic Adventure on 360/PS3 has terrible online reviews yet the fan ratings on the consoles are about 4.5/5. I am not sure why morons at IGN and everything else get to choose what people like (all the big reviewers are owned by the same company, anyway, so it is all bribery based).

I can't think of a more illegitimate measure of quality than a fan ratings average.Kogen wrote: Sonic Adventure on 360/PS3 has terrible online reviews yet the fan ratings on the consoles are about 4.5/5.

Re: All-new 2D Sonic rolling out in 2010
The first Rush game is the Sonic Advance games all over again, but with (rather decent) 3D bosses and a sexier soundtrack. Sonic Rush Adventure is worth playing, it only resembles the Mega Drive games in the most superficial of ways, but it's an enjoyable platformer in its own right. The level design is a lot better than its predecessors and it actually has new stage concepts and an original art direction, instead of being yet another Sonic 1/2 wannabe. Your mileage may vary on the seafaring mini-games between zones though.Dr. BUGMAN wrote:I wonder if this means they'll be liquidated; I've been meaning to check them out but the Advance series left such bad aftertaste in mouth despite fair-to-good reviews.

Yeah if you're severely brain damaged maybe.Kogen wrote:I thought the second one was alright for a handheld game, but the first Rush title is Sonic 06 quality.
In 2005 Rush was more than just "the advance games again" for me because the boosting mechanic did actually feel fresh for a while and made speedruns pretty awesome. Also, regardless of how you feel about Naganuma's style, the soundtrack simply had far more soul than the generic midi trash from the Advance games.
I appreciated the extra visual detail too (which unfortunately Rush Adventure completely lacks as it looks like Dimps finally gave up giving a shit about visuals).

Re: All-new 2D Sonic rolling out in 2010
Also here is list about Sonic Rush:
* Rolling makes you go slower
* Zone 1, Act 1 can be completed by holding right and doing nothing else
* Boosting removes any sense of gameplay, making all powerups and moves useless
* Holes everywhere, not fun
* Jumping is inprecise
* Dual screens makes getting hit by enemies and falling down holes much more common
* Homing attack barely works
* Terrible, weird techno music with absolutely no appeal
* Ugly character models
* Annoying, frustrating game design overall
* Boss fights with terrible collision detection
* A new, shitty, emo rival to Sonic (never had enough of those!)
* A new, shitty, recolour (Eggman Nigga)
* Another gay story about the power of friendship
* Last boss is not even new, just the Sonic Advance 2 boss
So yeah, what a fantastic game.

I would probably enjoy Rush Adventure a bit more if the audio wasn't so goddamn annoying. Even the decent tracks are hard to listen to when everything you do creates obnoxiously loud 8-bit sound effects.

I agree with most of Kogen's list.
So do we have more impressions of this game, or are most people waiting for the console versions? No way am I paying $10 for this on the iPhone. It astounds me how out of touch the major game publishers are with the App Store, banking on brand recognition to move overpriced games when multiple tiny independent developers are discovering ways to make millions with 99 cent apps.

To be fair, I believe it's working--at least in the UK apps store.Segaholic wrote:It astounds me how out of touch the major game publishers are with the App Store, banking on brand recognition to move overpriced games...

Destructoid and IGN have reviews up:So do we have more impressions of this game, or are most people waiting for the console versions?

Destructoid's analysis of the iPhone version is spot-on, but I agree with IGN's score.

Also, GamesRadar's review (this one has a shot of the world map):
http://www.gamesradar.com/ps3/sonic-the ... 5153197035
It looks like the console build is a lot different from the iPhone version.

Sorry, I wrote that wrong.How can you agree with a score without having even played the game?
I meant that I think the iPhone version should have got an 8/10 score. At the time of writing, I assumed the phone and console versions were identical (apart from the two level changes), hence the comparison.

Re: All-new 2D Sonic rolling out in 2010
So I downloaded the game yesterday evening and spent a good few hours playing it. I'll be honest; I hated it at first. It's clunky, cheap looking, and worst of all, the music is grating(Eggman's initial theme is one of the worst jingles to ever come from a Sonic game to date). I think Sonic's jump bothers me more than anything. It's as if every time you jump, there's an invisible gust of wind trying its damnedest to keep you in one place. Anyway, I put it down for a couple of hours but decided to give it another go before bed.
And this time, something clicked. I don't know if it was the fact that I was trying to get Zone 1 Act 2's elusive chaos emerald from the special stage that made the entire thing more rewarding, but for some reason I was having a blast this go around. I think it's because in the end I accepted the fact that this game is not Sonic as I knew it on the genesis. It's something that plays almost completely different. And if you can get over this fact, there's a generous amount of fun to be had.
So my advice to you guys? Try as hard as you can to embrace the fact that this is something different and you may actually enjoy it.

I would give it a try but Sony is doing one of those 'upload the game at 11pm' things, apparently.
