Cherry popping
What was your first Sonic game?
I made the poll choices the games I thought most likely to be introductory entries to people.

Re: Cherry popping
I might as well admit that I am the archetypal person Kogen referred to in the other topic, having been a Nintendo-exclusive person all of my gaming life up until that point and saw SA2B as a chance to see what this Sonic fuss was all about. For a double whammy, my first experience with the franchise was through the Saturday morning cartoon. I guess that makes me the hated demographic of both decades around here. But then again, if this didn't, I guess nothing will.
Though I think I technically played SA1 first, at a friends' house. And given the fact that I'm posting on TheGHZ, I obviously caught up with the 90's using collections and whatnot.
Also, I thought this thread was going to be about zits.

Re: Cherry popping
Sonic 2, which came with the Mark II Sega Genesis I got for Christmas '94. Also the first videogame I ever played.
Funny thing, Sonic 1 was the last of the trilogy (or quadrilogy, depending on how you count 3 and S&K) I played, and had no idea the spin dash wouldn't be in it. It was a strange moment, like finding out all the cool things you took for granted didn't exist when your grandparents were your age, but I quickly came to appreciate it for what it was.

Re: Cherry popping
As I've said a couple of times before, Sonic 1 for the Master System is one of the first games I've ever played, if not the first one. On a related note, it wasn't until Mega Collection that I got to play the first two genesis games - I owned a PC S3&K way before that.

This thread title made me think of the porn star, Cherry Poppins.
Sonic 2 (Mega Drive) for me. My main source of Sonic games was car boot sales, as I may have mentioned in the past (they're like the British equivalent of garage sales), so my play order was essentially random. I got S3&K for PC after Sonic 2, and Sonic 1 last. I didn't get a chance to play Sonic 2 and Knuckles until emulators rolled around.

Re: Cherry popping
Sonic 1 8-bit on a Master System at a friend's house down the road (this person also had Alex Kidd, ffffffuck yeah). Later, another friend's Gamegear allowed me to play it some more. Later still, yet another friend's Mega Drive let me try the real deal. Finally I got my own and that's where my story just sort of stops because there's nothing really worth continuing it with and I can't end it properly.
Maybe it's worth noting that the first system and game I ever owned was a Gameboy and Super Mario Land/Tetris. I can't remember what the first game I actually played was, though.

Re: Cherry popping
We recieved a Master System for one of my sibling's birthdays, which had Alex Kidd built-in. We got Sonic 2 for it shortly after. There were also some friends of ours that had the Mega Drive games. All that along with the AoSTH cartoon airing a short time later ensured I'd be sticking with Sonic for a long time.

Re: Cherry popping
I could've sworn I had already posted my story elsewhere on the boards, but I can't find it.
Long story short, my parents got my brother a model 1 Mega Drive with packed-in Sonic 1 for Christmas when I was a wee lad, and that was probably my first exposure to video games other than old computers like the ZX Spectrum. Then we warred over it for the remainder of the year until they caved in and bought me a model 2 with packed-in Sonic 2. And my brother eventually just gave me Sonic 1, so that was pretty cool.
Then I hunted the following games on my own and would end up playing all of them in order of release, save for the spin-offs. My brother eventually bought a Sega CD on his own, so I was able to get Sonic CD before Sonic 3.
Boring and predictable order, but I only ended up getting Dr. Robotnik's way after I had all the Saturn games, and only via Sonic Compilation. It's the one (PAL) Mega Drive Sonic game I don't own.

The model 2 was sold with Sonic 1 too, IIRC.Neo wrote:Then we warred over it for the remainder of the year until they caved in and bought me a model 2 with packed-in Sonic 2.

Re: Cherry popping
As far as I can recall, I was more into Sonic for the cartoons and the Archie comic for the longest time. I didn't get on the games boat until insanely late. I was given a used, somewhat beat-up Genesis 2 obtained from a flea market store, and no less than five games with it: Sonic 1-3, Spinball, and 3D Blast. When did this happen? Early 1998. Yeah, the point at which the Saturn was about to croak. I'm not sure I fully understand the circumstances :p (I don't remember how long it took before I had S&K and Mean Bean, but it was before getting a Dreamcast in christmas '99.)
But i'm gonna put it as Sonic 3 since that's the first one I turned on. I distinctly remember this fact because, when I got to the middle of Angel Island 1, the screen erupting in flames scared the crap out of me and I didn't play that one again for a good while. I'm betting i'm not the only one. Fess up!

Similar experience -- I was big into Archie Sonic after playing Sonic 3 at a neighbor's. Wasn't allowed a home console as a kid, so the Dreamcast was my first Sega system. I'd been playing those Sega PC ports for a while, though, so I got to play most of the Genesis and Saturn Sonics. I only played Sonic 1 for the first time a couple years ago.

As I said in some other topic, Sonic 2 for the Game Gear.
Naw, that never bothered me. The wall trying to squish you in Hydrocity Act 2, however...FlashTHD wrote:...when I got to the middle of Angel Island 1, the screen erupting in flames scared the crap out of me and I didn't play that one again for a good while. Sonic 2 for the Genesis was my first Sonic game. I remember the second half of Chemical Plant act 2 being a traumatic experience.

Though I understand why that would be the case, that is oddly the last part of Sonic 2 I really like (except maybe Wing Fortress). For one reason or another, every level after Chemical Plant just annoys the piss out of me.Wombatwarlord777 wrote:Sonic 2 for the Genesis was my first Sonic game. Re: Cherry popping
I hated Chemical Plant. I would get to the level with somewhere between ten and twenty lives, depending on how well I'd done so far, and I would invariably lose all but two or three. Or ALL of them. And then I would have to start over. I'm pretty sure that damn level was baby Del's first rage quit.

You guys are pussies. Chemical Plant is a breeze. I never had a problem until Metropolis.
For years I actually couldn't beat the boss of the Labyrinth Zone. The first time I saw Star Light and Scrap Brain, it was via the level select.

The rising water shafts in both were frequent game enders for me. It's quite possible I have never stepped into that region of Chemical Plant ever since I discovered the shortcut (which I believe was only after playing the level with Knuckles).Green Gibbon! wrote:You guys are pussies. It's hilarious, they pushed Labyrinth from being the second level into the latter half of the game (just barely) due to its insane difficulty spike, but then took Chemical Plant, which was going to be one of the last stages in the game, and made it the second level!
...Well I mean, it's not hilarious but, you know.
Yeah, fuck you.

I find it sad that kids growing up today will one day look back nostalgically on games like Unleashed and Black Knight as being high points for the franchise.

I didn't need a level select code to beat Sonic 1. With all of the Emeralds.

Now, Mecha Sonic and the Death Egg, that's tough. As a kid I never thought that Mecha Sonic had a predictable pattern to his attacks. And I still find the Death Egg hard, because it's easy to fall into its spiked hands after landing a hit on its gut.
