One more thing I'd like to add on why I like 256x256 chunks so much. Because of memory limitations (as you only get to use fewer of them), you will see a stage with plenty of repeating ones - but since their surroundings and objects will be different, they will not feel the same. They will feel familiar, and yet they will be different. It's pretty surreal, and adds lots of "soul" to the level...as if each was its own world of terrain features and quirks.

In Sonic 2, level segments don't repeat nearly as often, and it's ... not as familiar and comforting as it was in Sonic 1.

But you still can, if you know what you're doing!

That's actually something I really liked about Sonic 1 Megamix (Tweaker just said he worked on it? Cool!), the way it was built entirely out of those same chucks meant that the feel of the game didn't really change. Even when a fangame completely dials the way Sonic handles, the level design could go anywhere, for good or bad. With Megamix, I was spotting and recognizing those chunk formations, both consciously and unconsciously, as they came at me in unexpected orders, so even though I didn't really know what was coming, I often knew exactly how to approach obstacles really smoothly and quickly. It was a really interesting thing to play.

He's the one who started it, natch.

I'd say Sonic 2 is easier than Sonic 1 overall, but the Special Stages are a pain in the ass. I could get all the Chaos Emeralds with ease when I was 10, but now I start struggling after the third one and rarely end up with all seven. Same thing with Sonic CD.

Conversely I used to have trouble with Sonic 1's Special Stages as a kid but find them relatively easy now.

S3&K's were challenging at first, but I quickly memorised them well enough to glide through. The Blue Spheres lock-on game is a different kettle of fishes altogether though.

But all this talk makes me want to play Saturn's Sonic 3D again, the Special Stages MAKE that game. I'd pay to have a full game of those, 1996 graphics and all. Gotta love the music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=np76lPXKfCo

Oh my goodness YES. I thought about them earlier on and I literally started salivating.

In my opinion, I have to disagree. Sonic 2 was the only Sonic game I couldn't finish as a kid. And those special stages were hard as hell.

Indeed. That's one of the only few things that I like on Sonic 3D.

Doesn't that mean that you've somehow associated them with eating?

Influence? Dragon Ball Z, star wars and pop culture of that time... thats what ruined Sonic...

Most kids started to cheat and use Super, so that lead to some idiot at Sega to say "Hey, they cheat because the game its too hard, lets make easier Sonic games". A easy game means small kids as a target audience and that also ended lowering the standars cuss "Small kids just play the games cause they think Sonic is cool".

Wait, that didnt happened, what really happened is that after Sonic Adventure, they had no idea of what the hell they where doing....

Or maybe it was the quick cash games? You know Sonic 3D blast, spinball, the gamegear ones?

Okey, I blame SA2, happy?
