I also forgot to mention how awesome Wily's castle is in this game. Not only is the first boss, known as the Weapon Archive, packed with nostalgia (three sets of three devices, each wielding the weapon of a past Robot Master, ranging from ElecMan to Tornado Man), but Wily's personal craft has a distinct "pirate ship" bent to it (topped with giant hat), and the FINAL final level is upside-down, in space.

Except that Mega Man 8 is piss easy, barring a few segments (such as the "JUMP JUMP SLIDE SLIDE" ones), especially after you start getting some of the better upgrades (like the laser-Mega Buster). Still one of my favorites, though. Do yourself a favor and hunt down the Saturn version, it's not horribly expensive (I only paid $25 for it four years ago) and is MUCH better than the PS1 version - more bosses, more bonuses (sound test, concept art), underwater levels have more fancy effects, etc.

What about the X games? I could do with a few more Saturn games, so are X3 and X4 worth it? How do they compare with their Playstation counterparts?

X3 is just a SNES port on both with shittier (by this I mean they managed to make bad music sound worse) music and terrible FMVs. X4 only has slightly different graphics; what they are, I do not know.

I would say just get X3 on an emulator and torrent X4 for PC.

Don't think X3 came out on the Saturn, but the PS1 port is not worth hunting for, just for bad midi audio and some quirky anime boss intros. (and some other anime cutscenes that look positively embarassing) X3 in general is not that great. It scatters around a ton of collectible shit, but much of it is worthless or even manages to make the game more annoying to slog through. Zero's inclusion is all but pointless and the bosses just suck.

X4 though is great. Does not repeat any of X3's mistakes and is pretty much as straightforward as X1 (not as good as it, alas), and it looks freaking fantastic. Difficulty is a little lopsided (may be too easy as X, occasionally too frustrating as Zero) but that should not be a problem. Get it with MM8 for Saturn. Of course, you should still get X1 which is to date the best Mega Man anything ever made. Then X2 if you liked that.

X3 did come out on the Saturn - but only in Europe and Japan. As I recall the European version fetches a pretty penny - the Japanese one, not so much. It's not that it's a BAD version, just that it doesn't really have anything over the SNES one (aside from a CD soundtrack that's personally worse than the SNES soundtrack - less rock, more jazz - and largely unmemorable FMV cutscenes).

X4 is probably my favorite in the series - that or X1. Brilliant, brilliant game. Unlike MM8, the differences between the two versions are more negligible; the PS1 version tends to fare better in terms of polygonal transparencies (Saturn gets the usual ugly mesh effect), but the Saturn gets warping backgrounds in the second intro stage and Magma Dragoon's stage and properly looping music (the PS1 version cuts out after a certain point and restarts), which also has a few extra measures added onto the intros of a few songs (really only the Eregion fight at the beginning and Frost Walrus' second stage). Otherwise they're pretty much identical, so you can't go wrong with either version.

Yes, yes, YES. Glad to see so much love for Rockman X4. I only ever got the Hapanese version so I don't know what they're saying in the cutscenes, but I fucking loved it. Looked great, played great, music was ace, bosses were brilliant. My first, and favourite, Mega Man game.

I just found out they renamed Web Spidus to Web Spider in the English version. This is literally raping my childhood.

I cannot speak a word of Hapanese either. Very strange language they speak in Happen.

Yeah, I guess I spelt it wrong. It might be Hapannaise, although I'm fairly sure that's a dressing.

No, that's that stuff from Holland...I forget the name, but I'm sure that's what it is.

In more MM10-related news, official trailer for Bass Mode.

So I just got 10 and raced on through. I think this one is actually quite a bit easier than 9, but I might have just hit the bosses exactly right and had a few good guesses starting out as far as what might work well against who. (I never did figure out how to hit Nitroman properly--I'm certain I tried everything) I died a lot less this time around, at any rate.

I was gonna pick up either this or Castlevania Rebirth, but MM9 bit me on the arse so hard that I'm a little bit afraid of it now. Is 10 actually easier, or just easier if you're already good at Mega Man? Because, to be brutally honest, I am utter bollocks.

MM9 was actually the first classic Mega Man I ever played, and I found it to be quite easy. I'll admit that I never fully beat it but that's only because I don't have the patience to sit through all of the final levels without saving and quitting in between.

Use Chill Spike. It's especially effective if you can get him to run over the spikes themselves instead of just hitting him with the initial shot. (like laying down a spike trap for a speeding car, LOL GEDDIT?? ;D)

Play it on Easy mode. I did, and I was able to blast through it with little to no problems (ironically, it's the first MegaMan game I've been able to beat without the use of an Action Replay).

This was actually the first thing I thought to try (I even went into his stage thinking about it), but it must have been timed exactly wrong, because it looked like he ran over it but didn't take any damage. Or do you have to wait specifically for him to turn into a bike? By the time he'd got that far into his attack pattern I might have given up on it and was just focusing on evasion.

BladeMan is also sneaky like that, a direct hit doesn't work very well (but I still figured it out).

I don't think there's anything quite that hard in this one. Now that I am really trying to remember MM9, there were a lot of problem spots like that, I remember being stuck at the end of Splash Woman's stage on those damn bubbles for a long time before finally getting it right. Everything seemed much more straight forward in this one. The hardest stage for me was Strike Man, with the two "Goalie" minibosses, those guys beat the crap out of me. That and the sandstorms in Commando Man's stage.

I remember getting my ass handed to me a lot by the trucks in Nitro Man's stage when I bought the game back on Monday. Chill Man's stage was similarly hard, but that was more of a case of me knowingly failing some really, really simple maneuvers. I'm sure revisiting both will prove to be less difficult.

Sheep Man's stage was pretty easy, though - and so was killing him with the Mega Buster. Wound up having to kill that sewer douche (Pump Man?) with it, as well, when he proved to not be particularly weak to Sheep Man's weapon (like, I'm pretty sure it did more damage, but not all that much, and I was having a hard enough time hitting him with it that I was well out of ammo before he was even half-dead, forcing me to finish the job with the standard gun - good thing I'm pretty used to doing that at this point).

In case anyone cares, Mega Man, Normal difficulty (because Easy is for pussies, presumably).

I found Splash Woman pretty easy! But whenever I come across those one-hit-kill spikes I just lose all patience with the game. That bit where you have to jump off those swinging platforms down to that little doorway... that's where I put the controller down.

Gibbon stop picking on me ;_______;

So, finally having access to a Wii again I bought the Virtual Console Mega Man 2. I really liked it! It's the first Mega Man game I've played through properly, but I managed to finish it in one (long) sitting, albeit in "Normal" mode. The vanishing blocks in Heat Man's stage are bullshit, but I made the amateurish mistake of tackling it early before I got the platform items. I also finished Quick Man's stage before Flash Man's. The non-linear approach is pretty clever, there are clearly advisable ways of doing things (Flash Man before Quick Man) but no one best order to tackle the game. It was quite disappointing to get to Wily's Castle and suddenly have this freedom taken away. My gut reaction is that it would've been better with more Robot Master levels and only one or two Wily's Castle stages, but 8 weapons are already plenty enough, so it probably would've thrown off the balance.

How different is Hard mode? I feel like I can't really say I completed the game until I've beaten Hard mode.

General consensus says that I should go for 3 next, and I'll probably check out 1 for sake of curiosity. 4-7 are best avoided, I hear?

Also, some people swear by Mega Man IV and V (aka Rockman World 4 and 5) on Game Boy? Looks like I'd have to play those on an emulator, given their scarcity.

3 is suprisingly long, but it was rushed out the door - it shows in the level design. 4 is good and not as sloppy as 3. 5 and 6 are the two famously forgettable ones and are definitely not worth buying seperately. I think people tend to piss on 7 because of the massive change in the graphics (or they played the terribly emulated version in the Collection), but it's good and there's nothing especially wrong with it persay; feel free to buy it over 4.

RM4 follows the same pattern as the previous 3 (two sets of recycled robot masters and a Mega Man Killer) and is pretty good, but RM5 is a completely original game and is something special. Go for it. All the Game Boy games tend to be really stingy with the checkpoints though.

I'm not sure about the differences in 2's hard mode, but I don't think it's dramatically different. More enemies at least.

Oh and Mega Man Zero Collection. Pray this makes it to Europe.
