Where do you get your game news?
So guys, what game news sites do you typically frequent these days? I don't know how it came to this, but at some point Kotaku became pretty much all I was reading and more and more I'm starting to find their editorial personalities kind of annoying.
My favorite site lately is Tiny Cartridge but their focus is pretty narrow.

My only alternative to Tiny Cartridge is Offworld.com. But they're kinda niche as well (and relatively slow on updates).

Re: Where do you get your game news?
I don't read news sites because with I'm not really interested in any current releases. But I post on several gaming related forums, so I'm kept semi-current anyway.

Re: Where do you get your game news?
Ditto; the only thing more annoying is the site itself, which even on a fast connection loves to freeze Firefox and generally take too long to load anything. Bloated heap of garbage. Pervasive too - if anything of Kotaku's (say, a screenshot) is loaded on a page, I notice on the bottom corner that something from "cache.kotaku.com" is constantly trying to be loaded/connected to. That's a little eerie.G.Silver wrote:I don't know how it came to this, but at some point Kotaku became pretty much all I was reading and more and more I'm starting to find their editorial personalities kind of annoying.
Anyway, I just pick stuff up when it shows up on various sites and don't go to any specific place for it.

Re: Where do you get your game news?
That's one reason I hate Kotaku. The other reason is that they're slow on anything that's not being covered by everyone else. It's one thing to post news slowly, but sometimes they actually pick up considerably old stories and post them as new.G.Silver wrote:Kotaku became pretty much all I was reading and more and more I'm starting to find their editorial personalities kind of annoying.
I actually get most of my game news from here. I occasionally glance at some fansites as well, but only when I'm looking for something specific. It's not something I actively go searching for, and that's why most of the news I get are from looking at what you guys post.

Mostly Joystiq, but I also visit some "interest-specific" sites as well, like Tiny Cartridge and Protodude's Rockman Corner.

Usually reddit. I occasionally look at Kotaku and Joystiq, but if something big is happening, it'll either be on reddit or one of the forums I go to.

Re: Where do you get your game news?
I use RSS to keep track of literally hundreds of different sites, so I'm subscribed to most major game blogs. I just skip over everything that looks stupid or annoying, i.e. most of Kotaku's shit.
Looking through my "Games" category, here are some of the broader sites I'm subscribed to: Evil Avatar, Gamasutra, Gamespot, GameTrailers, Giant Bomb, Joystiq, Kotaku, PlayStation.Blog, Sega America Blog, Shacknews, Wired Games. I get a shitton of redundancy when it comes to game news.

I used to do the same thing Holic does, but it got to be too much for me. Now I just feed Joystiq and GayGamer. The latter of which won't appeal to most of you. I stopped reading Kotaku long ago -- their sexism goes way too far. I realize that when you put two single straight men in a room together there's going to be a certain amount of "oh, women", but there's a line, and Kotaku leaps right over it and keeps on going.

I check Kotaku every now and then but they're starting to annoy me. On top of everyone else's complaints, their original articles are pretty terribly written. Their commenters are also kind of dumb, but they're excellent troll targets. So I guess that's a plus.
Destructoid is more or less the same, just a hell of a lot less professional.

Am I contributing if I say here?
I probably miss plenty of things I'd normally be interested in, but I'm honestly okay with that. I'm usually pre-occupied with one game too many as it is.

I generally go to forums or The Magicbox, then Kotaku or Joystiq. Joystiq slightly edges out Kotaku for being a bit more up to date and a little less annoying, but I think their commenters just might be worse.
Most other game sites I visit aren't exactly news related.

Re: Where do you get your game news?
I get them from The GHZ and CulT, the IRC channels I'm on, the German magazine Man!ac (although it's called M!Games now) which I still buy every month despite not really caring any more, and my subscription to the YouTUbe channel of a Chinese video game news site which I never visit but which always uploads new trailers of stuff.

Re: Where do you get your game news?
My opinion of game journalism in general is so low it forms a pit in spacetime. The only two sites I check habitually are Game Watch and Magicbox, and I think the former I only like because I can't read most of it.
Most news I get from here first.

Joystiq and GoNintendo, pretty much. Joystiq has a tendency to be a bit late with the news, and GoNintendo has a tendency to link articles and chime in with his two cents before I even get a chance to read what they'd said, which tends to irk me. Still, both supply me with news, which is good enough, I guess.

Re: Where do you get your game news?
Game journalism is garbage.
Lately I tend to only have time to go to Kotaku. I used to go to IGN, 1Up, and Game Trailers. I still go to that second batch when I feel like something other than Kotaku. I tend to check both 1Up and IGN for reviews, since I don't tend to like Kotaku's.
And I subscribe to Game Informer unfortunately. I just have to have something physical in front of me, from time to time. And since I don't watch the game industry like a hawk, I'll occationally find something in them that I would had missed otherwise. Once my subscription runs out though, I'll probably switch back over to EGM. I think EGM had much better writing, although that's no really saying a whole lot.
I haven't found too many places where I can find a decently written editorial. Most of them are just bad, with incorrect facts scattered throughout, like a minefield play place. I was reading a few pieces each week on Insomnia after Isuka started linking to them all the time. I don't usually agree with them, but their opinions are well made and I don't think I've seen a wrong fact on there.

This reminds me, Steve Harris finally completed the EGM revival. Even got Sushi-X back.

Re: Where do you get your game news?
I just wait for the stuff worth looking at to trickle down to me through forums and IRC. I used to frequent Eegra, which isn't so great for game news so often as vaguely game-related hijinks, but the dudes running that joint completely lost interest in the site and it died in short order. You could tell that they stopped caring before it even reached that point. It's a real shame, they had a wonderful thing going.

Re: Where do you get your game news?
I generally only care about Nintendo news as with the next gen systems I'm usually happier to just wait and see what comes out nowadays. Or I just check the gaming section of other forums I go to.
So saying that I primarily use http://www.gonintendo.com

Re: Where do you get your game news?
gr4yJ4Y reminded me that I still get Nintendo Power. Not really for breaking news or opinions, but just details that might happen to pop up. Considering they've covered somewhere around 3 different Sega games before any other magazines (NiGHTS Journey of Dreams, Sonic Chronicles, and... Black Knight), that's probably the reason I still put up with its clear bias. In fact, I hear there's going to be a Sonic 4 interview in the next issue; I'll upload that when I get it...
