I like how they think dirt = plant roots.

It looks terrible.

lolllllllll

If that's their idea of attractive/"old skool" landscaping, i'm afraid to find out what they plan to do with the character design.

Well Sonic's head like a curled plant root, I would assume.

Dear Sega:

Please release for XBLA/PSN/Wiiware.
Please have fully playable Tails a la S2 and S3&K.
Please release a Saturn controller for all 3 systems to go with the game.

I swear to God, if you do all 3 I will buy 10 copies and give away 9.

Bonus: If you include a level editor I will buy 20 copies.

Sincerely,
MT
Update:

If the game has

1) fully playable Tails a la S2 and S3&K AND
2) Averages at least 75% on Metacritic or GameRankings

I will give away 10 copies.

If it also includes a level editor, I will give away 20.

I may just give away one copy a month until I run out of money or die. We'll see how good it is...

Well, that rules me out, then.

Although thinking about it, it was obviously going to be DLC, and since I'm using a Mac and my only console is a Wii (that can't connect to the online store), I didn't have much hope to begin with.

^you assuming this game will be hand-drawn like Wario Land. That's a nice thought.

Unfortunately, with a that 2.5D comment that was mention before, I have a feeling that this game will look more like the atrocious Rocket Knight and Bonk revivals.
"But with Project Needlemouse, I think that Sega wanted to settle [sic] demands, because there’s a lot a nostalgic gamers out there, and on XBOX Live or PSN…(pause)…you have a lot of hardcore gamers. And the old versions of Sonic games are selling very well on these platforms, so there’s a real market for these kinds of products. [...] The idea really is to finally please all these hardcore gamers, because we love them at Sega."
I'm confused. Since when has Sonic the Hedgehog(the original 16-bit games most of all) was considered a "hardcore" franchise? Those titles had a really straightforword objective and only used the d-pad and one face button. They are on the same wavelength as Tetris, Pac-Man and Super Mario in that they were made to appeal to everyone.

Nothing in his post indicates this. That said, other examples of largely or completely hand-drawn games include Muramasa and A Boy and His Blob, both for the Wii. Non-HD 2D is doing quite well on the Wii, really.

You realize Rocket Knight was pre-alpha, yes?

Everyone who owns Wario Land that I know have said it was a ripoff. So it is just Nintendo pushing their popularity right now. Other franchises cannot risk to do what the leader of the hardware market can.

And I doubt Sonic is going to look like Rocket Knight looks. Most of the remakes do not look ugly like that.

Wario Land's problems aren't inherent from its hand-drawn visuals.

You realize it's being made by a company who has yet to make a game that didn't turn out mediocre?

Probably not "most" but there seems be a significant trend of publishers using their b-team or outsourcing a b-team to develop these revivals in 2.5D and slapping some generic art design that hardly resemble anything found in the original titles.

I would love to see Sega be above this, but they don't have a good record on how they handle this franchise, have they?

Actually, I'd say the leader of the hardware market usually has the option of playing it safe (which is what Nintendo is doing for the most part). It's Microsoft and Sony that have to take the bigger risks or follow the leader (motion control) to regain market share.

Oh and the Sonic Rush games were way funner than they were pretty. I don't think that's really something we need to worry about seeing how good (decent?) stuff like Sonic Unleashed looked.

Name a normal console Sonic game made by SEGA that has poor graphics in the last 3 years.

Well, maybe not on console but I wouldn't put it past them to pull another Backbone. I think I recall an interview where they stated they actually were aiming for retro with Rivals 2, and I didn't particularly like the direction there.

I guess its not a matter of whether they'll put in the polish, by now I fully expect that much. Just hoping they get the style right.

This looks pretty good. But then again it's from 2008. This year's remakes really kinda sucked.

I'm surprised anyone is worried about the visuals, of all things! Don't you guys think that they're just going to make "Sonic 2D" using the Hedgehog Engine?

Sega is advertising the new game as "HD", which means it's coming to the systems that the engine supports. It already exists, it makes pretty-looking environments, and it's rigged up to make 2D stages. It's gotta be by far the most cost-effective option. Why would they even consider doing anything else? They're not going to make a new game engine for no reason.

Tell me, is the engine for Valkryia Chronicles 2 the very same as the one used in the first game? ;^)

Yeah, re-using the Hedgehog Engine is a possibilty, assuming they don't phone in a cheaper outsource job.

They planned to license the thing out, and as of yet they've not even done that. The market, as it happens, isn't exactly cornered on global illumination engines. A big new Sonic Team project (this don't strike me as that) is the only place I see it showing up again.

For the reasons she demonstrated I don't see why it wouldn't have just as equal chance to look - borrowing a Gibbonism for you - insipid. And yeah, other forums still fail completely to grasp this but Sega PR has long proven to be all controversy and white noise and no substance.

Hey Zelda is a wolf? Lets make Sonic a monster Hog!

So, Nintendo is making a remake of Super Mario bros 3 in a 3D that plays like a 2D game, lets do that with Sonic!
