Do the floating enemies even still have their spike holes? Perhaps it may be some indication of a hard mode coming our way!

Only the red ones have spikes. The blue ones just hover in place as homing attack bridges.

Because that will not automatically make them better games.

I dunno, because if you're going to capitalize on trends then you could at least try not to look like you're taking the competition (or fan hacks) and running it through a Xerox?Arcade wrote:PS: Really, if Capcom can make NEW megaman games and make them 8-bits, why cant sega make new Sonic games and make them 16-bits?
Or yeah, exactly what this genius said.Crowbar wrote:Because that will not automatically make them better games.

What? It looks like something he could, from his perspective, technically be able to do. Other than the fact it completely misses the point of loops of course, but why are you surprised? Loops are so 1999. Back in there with the, you know, homing-jumpless game.Kogen wrote:

From a speedrunner's perspective, the prospect of being able to bypass loops altogether with a well-timed jump pleases me. The casuals who want their meager loop thrills can have them, and the rest of us can just skip the bullshit altogether. I'm calling this one a feature!

Sonic games are not for speed running. They are for eye pleasures as you go through a loop like a real pinball, not like some floaty rat.

Yeah, a platformer with a character whose central gimmick is speed is totally off-limits to speedrunners.

Re: All-new 2D Sonic rolling out in 2010
I'm not intimately familiar with the game's physics, but this doesn't look like it's that faster than passing loops the normal way...full speed should definitely get you through loops quicker than this. Though I'm sure it's useful when you don't yet have full speed.Ritz wrote:From a speedrunner's perspective, the prospect of being able to bypass loops altogether with a well-timed jump pleases me. But tool-assisted speedruns are so friggin' fun to watch - especially when they figure out how to break the game without screwing up their time (like Collision Chaos 1 from the Sonic CD run). I'd argue they're allowed more leeway here than the real speedrunners.

Yeah, because it's totally against the laws of humanity to play a game a different way.(No Imagination) wrote:Speedrunners suck.

But then you're not showing public Sonic CD, you're showing them a RAM hack of Sonic CD, and it should be clearly stated as such.
Instead the fact's hidden behind some mysterious abbreviation of "TAS", and the explanations of what that even implies are almost never given within the videos themselves. Then thousands of freshly delivered 4 year olds in Korea go and watch these videos. "So that is how Sonic played back in the old days, huh? Neat." And fan demand suddenly no longer accepts proper Sonic platformers, instead demanding a quick fix of Sonic raping whatever countryside he happens to be running in. Cue endless running in dull landscapes.
That's why I think TAS runners suck.

Seriously. They're showing off this game you really like, but they want the good parts to end as soon as possible. Bah, I guess I'm just not into that.

YES BECAUSE MY OPINION IS CONSIDERED A LAW OF HUMANITY AND WHATEVER I THINK SUCKS IS AGAINST THE LAW THE HUMANITY.Yeah, because it's totally against the laws of humanity to play a game a different way.

Re: All-new 2D Sonic rolling out in 2010
Offended much there? It's no crime to like cheating while playing, you know. Just be a man and call it for what it really is: no longer the same game. Breaking scores in Sonic CD's Time Attack and watching other people doing it is fun and it's called 'post-game content of Sonic CD'. Playing through Sonic 3 & Knuckles in a single sitting and attempt to beat your previous time is fun, too, even if you happen to be just sitting there and watching. Silently removing the speed barrier in Sonic 2 is no post-game content of the game, it's remodeling the it in some fundamental and subjective manner; no matter what 'tools' are used. I've watched these speedrunners skip sections and fly over open air and otherwise impress public with daring stunts only Super Sonic should be able to handle ... while I admit can be fun to watch, it should be noted this is not how these games are supposed to be played, OR why they sold a gazillion copies back in the day.

http://tasvideos.org/WelcomeToTASVideos.htmlUsing these tools, we overcome human limitations to complete games with extremely high precision, entertaining our viewers as our players tear through games at seemingly impossible speeds. The end result of this process is simply a series of key-presses which could theoretically be performed on the original hardware.
No-one is claiming otherwise. You're just being that guy who points out that pro-wrestling is staged.

The fact that you call it "cheating" just proves you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. How is it cheating if everybody is forced to play under the same set of rules? Just because the rules are different, they're automatically invalid?
Do you also take away the controllers from your friends' hands when you don't like the way they play a game?

Re: All-new 2D Sonic rolling out in 2010
It's cheating in the sense that they aren't playing the game legitimately. A person with the console and game alone couldn't practically replicate most TAS speed runs, regardless of how many hours of practice they put in.
This would be a serious problem if they didn't clearly label their runs as TAS. But they do, which is why (No Imagination) is confusing me. It's hard to imagine a person mistaking a TAS as the intended means of playing. Although I will agree that, while entertaining as a spectacle, TAS runs look thoroughly tedious to perform.

dude who cares what the hell kids do in the free time. Are tool assisted speed runs stupid? Sure. But if they enjoy wasting their time on it so what. Don't waste yours by calling them out on it. Oh fuck now I'm wasting mine.

Well. maybe if the new games where 16 bits they would focus on gameplay, not in "lets make Sonic look cool"
