HOLY FUCK, YES.
YES.
A THOUSAND TIMES, YES.
I'm having an orgasm right now.
On a side note, this level of art is what Mega Man 9 should have fucking looked like.

So is it a new game or not?
I never liked this game, but the weirdness of it is appealing.

It's the same story, but different and expanded gameplay and setting. Sort of like Starfox 64 was to the original Star Fox.
Re: Classic NES game revived in gorgeous hand-drawn 2D animation
Also how is it HD if it is on Wii?
And yes, MM9 should have looked like this.

Re: Classic NES game revived in gorgeous hand-drawn 2D animation
These bastards (wayforward) came to our school looking for 2d animators to do work for this game. They handed out these model sheets that looked like they'd been drawn by third graders and offered a pitiful amount of money to anyone willing to work. A few of my classmates tried it out but quickly abandoned the project when it became apparent these people had no idea what they were doing.
That doesn't mean you can't still be excited though!

Holy shit, I hate this game. I got it for Christmas one year and my dad played it way more than me. He actually finished it. I always got bored after watching all the blob's transformations.
Incidentally, was Contra 4 any good?
And for that matter, what the hell is David Crane up to these days?

This gives me further hope for a new StarTropics. I have a gut feeling Retro Studios will be involved.

If you like the idea of beating the last level on Ikaruga with only three lives, then sure. That is how this game is.Green Gibbon! wrote:Incidentally, was Contra 4 any good?
I am surprised that they whined that Hard Corps was too hard, yet this is one of the hardest games I have ever played (as in meant to be hard).
Also now that I know these guys are making it, I have become less interested.

I like the art, but I'm not really enthusiastic about having a bunch of motion sensor gimmicks, which I know there will be.
Don't know what uneducated, moronic excuse for a game journalist could have said that, but the fact is that this game is running, as most other Wii games do, at the standard NTSC resolution or in VGA, in case it's on a 4:3 aspect ratio.Kogen wrote:Also how is it HD if it is on Wii?
And yes, MM9 should have looked like this.
Morons just go about calling anything beyond NES graphics "HD", when infact they actually mean high resolution.
Still, it looks great, I'm wondering about the animation's smoothness.
Re:
I guess it depends on what High Resolution is. I assume they mean just over the 'standard', like you mentioned. Games like Halo 3 are not even 1280x720, just higher than the 'standard'.Isuka wrote:Don't know what uneducated, moronic excuse for a game journalist could have said that, but the fact is that this game is running, as most other Wii games do, at the standard NTSC resolution or in VGA, in case it's on a 4:3 aspect ratio.Kogen wrote:Also how is it HD if it is on Wii?

Also Zeta said it. You just called him an uneducated, moronic excuse for a game journalist.
Uh oh.

Re: Classic NES game revived in gorgeous hand-drawn 2D animation
Something magical has transpired here. To be honest, when I first played the original, I was so young that I couldn't even figure out how to get down the game's very first stairway (Much as I couldn't figure out how to jump over SMB3's first Goomba), but I have fond memories of running back and forth between those two screens regardless. Probably because the music was just that charming. And then I revisited the game via NESticle some time last year, and I couldn't stand it. But, hey, this put a smile on my face- all the better if they actually manage to make it playable this time around.

Looks better than Sonic Unleashed in motion. '2.5' is horrible.

A Boy and his Blob.
Official Trailer.
I like how it's like one of those direct-to-DVD cartoon movies; it's oddly fitting.
Also, mech-suit transformation. SOLD.
Also also, thanks for not mentioning the game's name at least once the entire thread; it made it a bitch to find.

Am I the only one who gets a really strong Iron Giant vibe off that trailer?
(Obviously, this is a Very Good Thing.)

Re: Classic NES game revived in gorgeous hand-drawn 2D animation
The difference there being that Iron Giant looked fantastic, while the animation here is actually laughably bad. I really hope that's just something they cobbled together for the trailer.
At least the game is starting to look a hell of a lot more entertaining than the NES original ever was.

The trailer looks fantastic. The Boy could shut up though.

I was on the fence on whether the whole thing was worth it or not, but the final levels just made the whole thing. I hadn't played a game like this since Mother 3.
So, uh, maybe you should pick it up if you happened to have forgotten that it existed.

That sounds good and I think it's time I make the decision to buy this. I've been waiting for people to give out their opinions on this game, but it seems to have been very quietly released somehow.
The only other problem is the guilt I have for never having finished the original Boy and his Blob. It's not even like I never tried or cared. I must have tried finish the original game almost 100 times growing up, only to fall on a spike like a little bitch or something.

Re: Classic NES game revived in gorgeous hand-drawn 2D animation
Well, it's not a sequel, or remake for that matter. It's more of a realization of what the original was in concept and attitude, but without the NES's limitations. I've never (legitimately) beaten the original either, and don't feel obligated to.
That said, don't take the dive without expecting some rough corners or easily exploitable puzzles. Methinks that's why it's 40 instead of the usual 50 MSRP.
I still recommend it, though, if only because it strikes the mood without intrusive cutscenes or ham-fisted melodrama.
