Odd that I just brought up Link's Awakening in the SSB Brawl the other day, eh? Coincidence!? ... Yeah, guess so.Shadow Hog wrote:Is Marin supposed to be some kind of weird nature lover with an incredible singing voice that is usually singing the tune that just so happens to be the key to waking up the Wind Fi- I mean, solving everyone's problems?

"The raccoon girl isn't enough. We need another character. Give us a suggestion."
"Maybe we should bring back an older character, like Fan-"
"NO. Did I not explain our situation? We do not have enough characters. We are sorely lacking in characters. If this is the case, then we certainly don't have any characters hidden away that we haven't used in over a decade. Otherwise, we would use those. But we are not so fortunate. We do not live in a perfect world. Do not pretend that we do."
"But look, this picture-"
"NO. That is a fabrication. That character does not exist. I saw you doodle it. I can see the smear of ink and dishonesty on your hands. Now help me come up with a new character. I'm thinking an armadillo or a tamandua."
"We had an armadi-"
"NO. You're fired. Bring me someone who will design me a new character. One with an excessive and distracting amount of markings and an ill-advised color scheme. Bring me the guy that did the last set of Pokemon. I want my characters to look like crap. We will make billions. Nothing will stop us."

My point was Rush was a legitimate cut above the rest. I'm uneasy getting my expectations up that high without Dimps' involvement.Titan wrote:Um, Rush 1 is basically Advance 4. I think you mean you see this as being Advance 5DackAttac wrote:The design wouldn't be as much of a disappointment to me had they just been honest and called it Sonic Advance 4. In fact, I'm calling it that in my mind, and maybe it'll meet expectations. Maybe.

Knuckles really does not look anything like an echidna, anyhow. But then again, Sonic doesn't look much like a hedgehog, either!
As interpretations of real animals, they definitely exercised a bit more imagination with the original cast. I think that's the big thing that's missing from the new characters. Cream just looks like any other generic cartoon rabbit. The few unique features she has to distinguish her from the Sonic template look to be inspired more by cartoon rabbit cliches than by any actual observations and interpretations of the features of real rabbits.

I kind of wish I knew how exactly to make characters more, well, unique. Personally I'd been toying around with a stoat character (well, c'mon, stoats are somewhat obscure animals!), but the more I think about it, the more I think it's a black-and-white female Tails with, well, one tail, and a tad bit more hair and different shoes (in this case, none)... which is essentially just as bad as Sega's been doing, really. Different hair, different shoes. I believe we've seen this complaint before.
Even her gimmick isn't that unique... she has the ability to swing her tail around excessively fast, essentially using it as a really freaking sharp sword. She wasn't designed to be a PLAYABLE character so the fact that such a move doesn't really fit into the Sonic formula is somewhat excusable, but the fact that, like, every Pokémon since the first generation have had "Tail Slap" (or similar) kinda means that my gimmick falls flat. Even if she can cut down trees with just a flick of her tail, it's really not that original. Heck, Tails even has a move like that in Sonic Adventure.
So yeah, how exactly DID those fellas in the original Sonic Team pull it off?... Coming up with a character that isn't incredibly generic isn't exactly an easy thing to do, I've found, but regardless it's something I'd like to have done at some point. Bodes well for moving on to more original work than fan characters, I'd think.
