Debut: Sonic the Hedgehog CD (1993)

Sleek and compact, heavy yet remarkably fast, the glossy Metal Sonic was designed by Eggman to beat Sonic at his own game. A cutting edge robot doppelgänger with even greater speed and power than the original article. This deadly rival was first unleashed during Eggman's Little Planet conquest scheme: Metal kidnapped Amy Rose in front of Sonic's very eyes, then escaped with his prize to Eggman's base. Sonic followed, and the blue hero's first confrontation with his metallic counterpart took place on a runway in Stardust Speedway. In the ensuing race, Metal Sonic's dirty tricks couldn't keep him in the lead, and the true Sonic emerged triumphant. The still speeding Metal Sonic slammed headlong into the exit gate just as it closed, and fell to his (apparent) doom.

Later, Eggman retrieved the main and sub CPU's from the Metal Sonic wreckage and loaded them into a spare body. Using Dark Ring Power, he was able to successfully rebuild his fallen masterpiece with improvements to boot: a newly-installed "plasner" component embued the revived Metal Sonic with a belly laser called the Plasma Pulse. However, despite the enhancements, Metal Sonic continued to fail in confronations with Sonic and the rest of the good guy critters.

Frustrated by his inability to defeat Sonic, the one purpose for which he was created, Metal Sonic's advanced AI took over. He turned against his creator and proceeded to upgrade himself with new abilities and technology. The rogue Metal Sonic assumed control of Eggman's robot army and held the Doc prisoner in his own aerial fortress. Using an elaborate ploy to lure Sonic and company into his trap, Metal was able to absorb biological data from Shadow, the fallen Chaos, and Sonic himself. With data acquired from three of history's most powerful life forms in addition to his own upgrades, Metal Sonic unleashed a full-blown assault on his chief rival. However, for all his efforts, he was ultimately defeated once more and collapsed on the deck of Eggman's flying fortress. Following the failed mutiny, Eggman performed some tweaks to revert Metal Sonic back to his original obedient self.

Alternate forms:

This is Metal Sonic's basic form, the way appeared at his debut in Sonic CD. Despite his somewhat monstrous transformations, he always reverts to this form once the dust has settled.

Metal Sonic after absorbing power from a giant Dark Ring in Chaotix. Despite a massive increase in size and the unhinging of his limbs, his abilities are mostly unchanged and he makes for a sickeningly easy final boss.

This is rogue Metal Sonic as he appears in Sonic Heroes. He's a bit larger and considerably more jagged. His spines form a star shape. It's in this form that he speaks for the first time.

Metal Overlord, Metal Sonic's ultimate transformation utilizing bio data from Sonic, Shadow, and Chaos. He has a number of additional skills in this state, most notably the ability launch his fingers like icy missiles (then regenerate new ones).
