:: Death Egg ::
Data:
Name: Death Egg
Japanese: デスエッグ
Debut: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992)

A colossal spherical space station, probably the largest machine Eggman has ever built. The Doc's extravagant base in the stars was short-lived, however, being promptly knocked out of the stratosphere by a certain busybody hedgehog. The plummeting citadel soon crashed into Angel Island, pushing the floating oasis into the surface of the ocean. Eggman quickly set up a base on the fallen island to relaunch his grounded but otherwise unscathed Death Egg, but as soon as the machine lifted off, it was shot down yet again by that meddling blue rat. Using the stolen Master Emerald, Eggman managed to get his remarkably sturdy space station into orbit once more - only to have it sabotaged (AGAIN) by you-know-who.

(Note that the hulking Eggman-shaped boss robo from Sonic 2 is also called the Death Egg - for info on that machine, refer to the listing of Eggman's boss machines.)

The Death Egg through the Years:

1992
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Though the Death Egg technically debuted in Sonic 2, there is no clear view of the fortress anywhere in the game. The final boss fight takes place in one of the interior rooms - this image is from the tiny level select graphic.

1994
Sonic & Knuckles
Finally a good look at this colossal celestial citadel, two years later. A very obvious spoof of Star Wars' Death Star. Seems none the worse for wear even after smashing headlong into Angel Island (twice).

1996
Sonic the Fighters
This molecular looking fortress may or may not be the original Death Egg - it's more likely a replacement.

2003
Sonic Battle
Barely visible from the high peaks of Holy Summit. Eggman calls it the Death Egg, but it looks more like the ARK. It is not likely either one - just a case of sloppy continuity.
