Sonic 2 mp3 Tool

Post by Spazz »

So, there's this cool little tool called the Sonic 2 mp3 Tool (created by Qjimbo). What it does is replaces the music in your Sonic 2 ROM with mp3s of your choice, as the name suggests. I'm posting it here because there's a few people here I'm sure'll be interested in it. Pretty nifty, in my opinion. I went with the very original idea of replacing most of the music with my favorite Sonic 2 remixes (with the exception of the Death Egg Boss, which I used "Live and Learn" from SA2). Click here to get it

Instructions:
Firstly you have to decide what tracks you want for each zone. Simply name each MP3 file it's number in the soundtest, and put it in the same folder as the tool.
02.mp3 - EHZ
0E.mp3 - CPZ
13.mp3 - Boss
etc.

Once you have placed the files (you don't need to place all of the them, but there will be no music on levels you don't put music for) boot up the emulator and the tool and choose what emulator you are using from the menu at the top (currently only two emus are supported). Then start the game as normal and you should here your music!

They're still there. I Haven't tried altaring them, though.

For some reason both the Sonic 2 music and my MP3s are playing at the same time. I could just disable sound on Gens but then I lose sound effects too. Any idea what's going wrong? I'm using Gens v2.11.

I've had that problem too. I think you have to click on the emulator you're using under the Emulator menu even if it's checked already. <strike>OR simply open the tool before opening Gens.</strike>
Yeah, the first one.

That works, thanks. Is there any way to disable the fucking speed shoes?

There is a checkbox with "Speedshoes" in the tool, but it's disabled. Haven't figured that out yet.

Any news on a Sonic 3&K MP3 tool? I want to shove S3's Boss 1 back in where it belongs.

I'd like that too, as well as for a few other Sonic titles, but none as of yet.

I've wanted a version of S3&K with the S3 theme tunes since 1994. Such a tool would be orgasmic.

That sounds pretty cool. Can someone point the way to some decent Sonic 2 remixes? I'd actually prefer stuff close to the original versions; I basically want the original soundtrack but Sonic CD quality.

Oh, here's what all the sound test crap maps to (to save you from having to go through it like I just did):

01--Results screen (2P)
02--Emerald Hill
03--Mystic Cave (2P)
04--Oil Ocean
05--Metropolis
06--Hill Top
07--Aquatic Ruin
08--Casino Night (2P)
09--Casino Night
0A--Death Egg
0B--Mystic Cave
0C--Emerald Hill (2P)
0D--Sky Chase
0E--Chemical Plant
0F--Wing Fortress
10--Hidden Palace/unused/luaP deirub I/whatever
11--Options
12--Special Stage
13--Boss theme
14--Final boss theme
15--Ending
16--Super Sonic theme
17--Invincibility

19--Main theme reprise (after credits)
1A--Act complete
1B--Game over
1C--Continue

1E--Credits

The hardest part is getting remixes that time up correctly, so many of them have extended intros that just don't work in games like this.

Getting the right type of music for the levels may be quite a challenge too. I reckon some of the tunes used on Wip3out may do well for some levels like Chemical Plant and Metropolis.
Just an idea though.

Actually, the ending remix in Hedgehog Heaven matches up just about perfectly with the ending cutscene. Just because nothing fancy was really done to it, sounds like the tune was just replayed on a synthesizer.

I'd like to try this neat bit of kit out.
If i had a Sonic 2 ROM.
I found an emulator easy enough, but does anyone know where I can download ROMs for free, if such a place does exist?

Edit: ^ He got it.

But here's a place for all kinds of old roms. NWS (not that any rom site is WS. Most have porn on every page):

http://www.romnation.net/ (you don't actually have to vote when it says to)
