Hmmm... No gloves, goggles seem to have been merged with glasses, outfit seems to be at least a little bit different...
Looks like they're redesigning Eggman again.

Movie tie-in games aren't really a thing done anymore, are they? I mean, substantial non-piecemeal console games?
Imagine that they where or that this materialized back when. Imagine the possibility that it turned out like the Spiderman 2 game. Sure it'd be mired in a contemptible source material no matter what, but the proper physics could be there if the team was passionate and competent enough. Heck, like SM2 it could be the one game to place Sonic in a sandbox. Not that sandboxes are necessarily the best thing fro Sonic, but it'd at the least be novel.
(Sonic Boom was an initiative to reinvent Sonic from the ground up; such a mission statement wouldn't really apply in a hypothetical cash-in. In the eyes of the movie license holders it'd be a one-and-done thing not even on their radar, not a ploy to start a new brand. Not to mention a Sonic game produced by Occidentals need not necessarily be bad)
I think that's the biggest let down here, that this can but won't happen.

Movie tie-in games have been locked in the mobile games dungeon for a while now, but there have been a couple to release on consoles in the last year or so (Cars 3 and Hotel Transylvania 3, as well as LEGO Ninjago)
My only gripe thus far is the obvious missed joke with the population.

It does make me wonder what 1981 could be an allusion to, if anything. It's not a particular banner year for Sega, their most notable game being Frogger, which is technically Konami. The elevation suggests it was chosen at random, unless 3445 has some obscure meaning.

Wonder if it's going to be christened "Rad Mobile." Or maybe one of Sonic's karts from Drift/All-Stars/etc.
Maybe we should start a pool on what predictions will come true

"Reports of wild robots rampaging to the north? Golly Sonic, I smell a weird mystery!"
In all seriousness, it might be interesting to see how Sonic interacts with a stern ally that doesn't let him get away with all of his guff. Knuckles and Shadow might be exceptions, but everyone else seems to just cheerlead Sonic in whatever he does. It honestly might lead to some new and interesting character dynamics.

It just occurred to me that Sonic's favorite foodstuff is chili dogs and this is a modern kids' film.

Ben Schwartz to voice Sonic in the new movie.
I dunno how I feel about this. Roger Craig Smith is a fine Sonic in small doses, and if nothing else the Sonic Boom show demonstrated that he actually has pretty great range as the character. I just really hope that Schwartz doesn't just reach for his Dewey Duck and call it a day.

It looks like I was right that he'd be recast. I'm not really familiar with Ben Schwartz. I just hope he doesn't ham it up, or try to sound like Roger Craig Smith. I'd rather have him do his own take than poorly imitate another one.Tsuyoshi-kun wrote:I'm still waiting on whatever actor they'll cast as Sonic. Rings are the macguffins. Not Chaos Emeralds, rings. Obligatorily needless bastardization no. 1!
Not that this deserves the benefit of the doubt, but maybe it's to avoid including Super Sonic? Not that CEs need to endow super modes given this is a different continuity. Then again Sonic Boom lacked CEs and Super Sonic, too.
Maybe Sonic's life will be spared 'cause he held onto one, yknow, for cheap eleventh hour tension.

Re: James Marsden taking lead role in Sonic the Hedgehog mov
I love how the plot teaser implies Sonic just has a big stash of rings hidden away for safekeeping somewhere. It's like Sonic's coming after Eggman because he absconded with his gold.
The decision to make rings the macguffins could be pretty interesting, though. They have a pretty wide range of uses in the various continuities, ranging from teleportation devices to power sources, not to mention their livesaving properties.

The climax of the film heavily involves Sonic picking up the same ring over and over and over again.Maybe Sonic's life will be spared 'cause he held onto one, yknow, for cheap eleventh hour tension.

I dunno, after spending 800 trillion of 'em on an empty paper grocery bag from the Chao black market, they kinda lost their appeal.

Re: James Marsden taking lead role in Sonic the Hedgehog mov
It hearkens again to the Series Bible and Kintobor's Reverse Quantum BioFormulator/Retro-Orbital Chaos Compressor that trapped all of the evil in the world in 6 emeralds using the power of the gold/containment rings, and Sonic's main goal was to recover the rings and restore the machine. Probably not what they're going with, but maybe some variation on it.Dr. BUGMAN wrote:Rings are the macguffins. Not Chaos Emeralds, rings. Obligatorily needless bastardization no. 1!

Okay, so I just learned that the movie has an estimated budget of $90 million. Apparently Paramount cut that down from $100 million.
Is there that much of a demand for Sonic? I guess I wouldn't be too surprised if the foreign box office manages to salvage this thing even if it bombs domestically. That seems to happen to a lot of movies, especially animated ones.

Made me curious about budgets of recent film similar ostensible ilk. Peter Rabbit was 50 million, Paddington 2 was 40m, and Christopher Robin was "70-75"m.
This exceeds a major Disney movie. What. Granted, all aforementioned are rather sedate not even comparing what anything Sonic-themed will surely demand. But still, what.

It also exceeds the budget of Deadpool ($58 mil) but is smaller in budget than the Smurf movies ($125 mil) & TMNT: Out of the Shadows ($135 mil)
