To those who own a Wii and Japanese Gems Collection...

Post by Dash »

..does this problem sound familiar?

I just bought a Hori pad off of a friend and wanted to try it out by playing some Sonic CD. Used Freeloader, popped in Gems, went to load Sonic CD and got an english error message(something that never happened when I loaded it on GC). Tried again but this time tried to load Fighters, same error message. It's odd, as Freeloader and other Japanese GC games have worked just fine on the Wii. To make it even weirder, the timed demos in the Gems gallery work just dandy. No scratches on the disc or anything... I'm not sure what's up.

So has this happened to any of you? Do you know what's causing it and how I could get around it? I have a serious urge to play CD now and I'd rather not go the trouble of pulling the Cube out of storage.

I just tried it and it seems to play fine on my Wii. However, I don't have the most recent version of Freeloader so I have to use this method to get it working.

There's a way, but it's more cumbersome than just pulling out your GCN:
- KEGA Fusion 3.51.
- Mega CD BIOS files and Sonic CD ISO (hint: you want to use the American Sega CD BIOS plus the 920 beta).
- Original Japanese soundtrack (the one that goes with the aforementioned beta) and the American one.

Have fun :) .

Why is the American BIOS preferable?

Just for comprehension (actually I prefer the Japanese one). Besides, that beta is American NTSC (as the page says, it's just the American version of the game but with the original soundtrack). There are even more BIOS files here.

EDIT: While we're at it, did someone else notice that the special stages in Gems Sonic CD go too damn fast (like, roughly double speed)? Probably it's because the Mega CD itself wasn't powerful enough to process them at full 60 fps, but this emulation of the PC version does. I just sold half my soul to get all Time Stones, I beg for my file's integrity now...
