There were downloadable tracks? That seems a lot better than more redundant characters.

So it is still dumb. Too bad Flash is Brb right now to notice.

Sonic the Hedgehog for the Master System, in which the ring count reseted to zero once you had gathered 100, was an interesting twist, even if it was probably due to technical limitations. Either you collect 100 rings to gain an extra life (at risk of dying while your count is still 0), or you keep your ring count low enough to protect against damage. Does this particular anomoly apply in any other Master System Sonic title?

Yeah. Sonic 2 does this as well (same engine). Sonic and Tails sends Sonic to a bonus stage, while it does the prior thing to Tails. Not sure about G Sonic because I am not importing it from Brazil.

I'm pretty sure G Sonic does the same thing, having played it myself.

Really? I wasn't aware of that -- never played the Game Gear/Master System ones. It could be something of a technical limitation, but then the hard limit would've been 127/255. Most likely it was just rounded off to 100 for consistency's sake and to reduce rendering time associated with drawing even more digits.

Interesting tid-bit, though.

The original one was a red Opa-Opa-esque kart with a really tall back and an oversized Omochao for a driver (about twice as big as usual). The one in SA2 Battle looks exactly like an Opa-Opa, is really tiny and light, and features a regular neutral Chao for a driver.

Uh, yeah? Each track came with a new kart exclusive to it. The High Speed Trial came with a protoype kart for Sonic, Fantasy Zone: Opa-Opa featured an Opa-Opa kart driven by an Omochao and Egg Robo featured a liveless, playable version of the track's namesake.

I think it's the same thing, except now you only lose 10 rings per hit, removing that aspect entirely.

In Sonic 1 for the Master System, I always avoid collecting more than 99 rings. Since that resets the tally to 0, and since it's impossible to get 150 rings in any stage (in other words, 50 rings after the reset), getting a 1-UP from rings means you don't get a free pass to the Special Stage. Considering the Special Stages each have a 1-UP monitor, a Continue monitor and more than enough rings to compensate with yet another extra life, getting more than 99 rings in this game isn't particularly wise. Unless you're past Labyrinth Zone, since the Special Stages become inaccessible after that.

Then again, it's kind of hard to get more than 99 rings in some of the levels and just flat out impossible in Green Hill Zone Act 2, which contains a total of 98 rings. I think there may be more levels where it's impossible, but I can't remember for sure right now.

The Final Boss of that game has got to be the most disappointing unlockable in the entire Sonic series.

"Hey Kid! You just slogged through all the zones of this awful game! You even found all the Chaos Emeralds in the most banal and ugly Special Stages ever! Your reward? Super Sonic? Nope! You get to fight this capsual-looking final boss! Tremble in fear as it slowly sweeps the stage, left to right! Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha! You deserve it!"

Adding insult to injury, that final boss was actually really tough. I can't possibly imagine doing all the work, only to lose all your lives and start over at the beginning of the game. That makes it possibly Eggman's most insidious torture device.
