A new (good) reason to get a wii
Vanillaware, creators of odin sphere and grim grimoire are making a new 2d action game for the wii.

Apparently it is set in feudal Japan has a girl main character and still has amazing art. Hopefully it comes out for other systems or I will definately have to get a Wii.

If they can't make it work with the remote then it's the damn controller's problem, not the whole system. But no, let's see Nintendo mandate this logic, and watch the system get mowed down by the competition in, how long? Couple years tops?Delphine wrote:I meant that you misunderstand that the point of making a game on the Wii is -- should be -- to use the wiimote. If they can't make the game work with the 'mote then they shouldn't be making it for the Wii. I hear the Xbox 360 is pretty popular.

THEN DON'T BUY A WII. God, this is not rocket science. If you don't like something, don't buy it.Majestic Joey wrote:I hate flinging around the wii mote.
In a couple years they're going to duct tape a couple of Wii's together and sandwich some HD in there, so it's a moot point anyhow.FlashTHD wrote:Couple years tops?

The rate at which Vanillaware churns out these games is astounding. The fact that the game takes place in feudal Japan turned me off for a second, up until I saw the screenshots. It seems a bit more action-oriented than Odin Sphere, which is certainly a good thing. Yes, this post reads more like a bullet list than anything, but that's only because I'm too busy watching Doctor Strange to care about prose. Why do all of Vanillaware's male leads suffer from some form of amnesia?

Yeah, because all of the DS's best games require the touch screen and microphone.Delphine wrote:I meant that you misunderstand that the point of making a game on the Wii is -- should be -- to use the wiimote. Hey, has anyone else heard about that Wii Zapper rumor that says a Zelda Crossbow shooting game is packed in with the item?

It's real: http://kotaku.com/gaming/breaking/ninte ... 298328.php
I've got to say, despite my cautious enthusiasm for the games it "supports", I can't for the life of me figure out what the point of the Zapper shell is. I mean, it doesn't seem to add any additional buttons or functionality whatsoever. How is it any different than just using the remote and nunchuk on their own, aside from forcing you to hold them in a particular postion? Couldn't you just play Umbrella Chronicles just as effectively (and probably more comfortably) without the shell?

I see it as a delayed excuse to release Duck Hunt onto Virtual Console--but that's just my opinion.

In a way, it makes even more of a difference in 2D than it does in 3D.
3D graphics are scalable. A crate might be ten pixels wide, or 20, or 100, or 1000, depending on how close your character is standing to it. With an HD display, your screen resolution is bigger, which means you can see that crate in much more detail. But the game can still easily scale the graphics down to a lower resolution. The effect is no different than how it would display objects in HD that are slightly further away from your character.
2D graphics, on the other hand, are not scalable... they are drawn deliberately pixel by pixel. The resolution the game is designed for is the only resolution the game will ever be viewed in... if you blow it up bigger, it just makes the pixels in the game art bigger as well.
So basically, by making the game in standard def, they are effectively painting on a smaller canvas. HD would allow them to draw that pretty artwork of theirs much larger.
Of course, drawing it in HD would also mean it wouldn't fit on most people's televisions...

I wonder if the DVD-9 of the 360 has enough capacity for standard definition and HD samples of a 2D game of this nature (that is, flash-like 2D). Someone at Vanillaware could develop some sweet graphics compression algorithm (or even try and render some of the elements in real-time using vectors and textures) so it could store two separate versions of the game, and save any extras for a second disc if they must.
Of course this isn't a problem with the PS3, but I'll assume anyone that has the console must have an HDTV already, so it's entirely moot.

You would think so, but apparently most owners aren't even aware the ps3 and 360 are capable of HD visuals.

Isn't Alien Hominid and the new Castle Crashers game 2D sprite based HD games that can run in SD? How do they do it? Alien Hominid is only 50 or a 100 megs.
Oh and the difference between 360 games and Wii games graphically is staggering. I also bought the HD DVD addon and that kickass too. Even the sound kicks more ass. Everyone should buy 12, now!
