Anyone picked up Puyo Pop Fever yet?

Post by plasticwingsband »

I was wandering down the GameCube wall at the local GameStop and I noticed that Puyo Pop Fever was on the shelf. It kinda shocked me as I hadn't heard about the release, and normally know when a new Sonic Team release is coming out.

I know that GG! imported the DC version, and I was wondering if it's worth it. It's retailing for $30, so I'll probably pick it up anyway, but does it bring anything new to the table? What exactly is this "Fever mode" anyway?

I actually own it. Let me sprinkle my opinions.

First off, if you acquire it for the love of GOD turn on the Japanese voices! The English VA is atrocious - par for the course from Sonic Team. The 3-D effect is wholly unneccesary (but can be disabled). New 3-puyo and 4-puyo blocks can enter the field (and are more likely to appear when you're lagging in a match). The cast is mostly new, with the exception of returning Madou icons Arle and Carbuncle.

Fever Mode is, of course, the largest draw. Each time you counter a chain, your Fever meter charges - after seven counters, the meter is full and you have fifteen seconds to unload on your opponent. A set of puyos drop that can, with one match, be cleared with no less than a 4x chain. While in fever mode, after that one match any unmatched puyos clear and you are presented with a new field of puyos.

Here's the catch with Fever; when you counter a chain to charge your fever meter, your opponent gets an extra second to work with should he enter fever mode assuming you still have trash coming. That is, if you get hit with a shitload of trash, counter it all away and enter Fever, you opponent has 22 seconds for his Fever while you have only 15.

All clear has been changed too; instead of just upgrading your next match to Rock Ojama, it plops an easily chainable set of puyos in your field; a one-shot fever, as it were.

Fever mode can be disabled for two-player matches (using Puyo Tsu rules) but not for one-player matches.

It's a decent game on its own, though in the end nothing to write home about and if you already Puyo for GBA (which also uses Puyo Tsu rules; Mean Bean Machine uses Puyo One rules) it probably would only be worth it if you want to play on a TV as opposed to the cramped GBA screen.

Which I do.

Is there Japanese audio available on the EU GameCube version?

I have the Japanese GC version, and it's got both audio options, so I assume the US/Euro versions would also. (They even had the Sega Europe credits in the Jap version, so it's probably the exact same thing.) When you set the language, though, the text gets set with it. You can't have Japanese dialogue and English text.

Puyo Fever's not bad, but... y'know, it's Puyo. Still. Plus I hate the new character design. I'm really not into the whole pseudo avant-garde Cartoon Network look. It was kind of neat when it was just Powerpuff Girls, but it's turned into the cel-shading of the animated world. I'm tired of thick lines and flat shapes. I guess it's supposed to be super hip or something, but I miss gradation.

Tsu is still the best Puyo ever. You can only serve up a puzzle game so many different ways.

The US version allows independent setting of text and VA.

And yes, Tsu is still the best Puyo. It set the standard that every other Puyo is still trying to live up to.

*bump*

Something I noticed tonight when playing Fever: The different characters recieve their Puyos in a set order; for example, Amite's pattern is 2 2 2 3 2 2 2 1 2 2 2 3 2 2 2 4 (1 being a giant 4 puyo and 4 being a dual-colored 4 puyo). Each character's puyo pattern is displayed under their strategy in the character select, and only Arle's pattern is all 2s.

Of course, in Classic rules everyone's pattern is all 2's.

I opted to pick up Skies of Arcadia Legends instead (as it was $10 less, and brand new), but I suppose I'll get Puyo Pop Fever on my next paycheck.

Hopefully I'll be able to get Beyond Good & Evil as well, if I'm able to find it.

Panel de Pon's cool, but it's got nothing on Puyo. I really like the Magical Drop games, too. They've got the hottest super-deformed chicks ever.

I never really cared much for Columns.

About a week ago I found a ROM for a SNES game called Hentai Columns. Basically, there's a naked chick in the background, but most of her is covered up by the foreground where the columns fall. I've played for about 45 minutes, but there doesn't seem to be anyway to see the whole image in the background.

Which sucks, cause that means I wasted all that time playing Columns.

I have Magical Drop 3 on import that I got, like, a hundred years ago, and I thought no-one else knew the series, so it's nice to find I'm not alone in thinking World and Empress (among others) are so very, very fine. She be all bouncin' around in that floaty robe thing looking sexay, if having 3 eyes spreads your bread of course.

On an interesting side note, all the characters from the MD series are based on Tarot cards.

Man, Empress is fucking hot. I know I'm getting more deranged as I get older, because when I was young and easily excitable, I'd have never considered a super-deformed chick hot. But she's all cracking the whip and jiggling every time I make a combo and I'm all like: "Man, I'm wrong for thinking what I'm thinking, but DAMN."

Have you seen the multi-colored Worlds they use to advertise some hentai site that I've never bothered clicking into? Like, she'll be on the side of the screen doing her bouncy win pose and there's a message underneath along the lines of "click me for free porn" or something. And I'm all like: "That's World from Magical Drop. What the hell?!"

For softcore porn games, you can't get any better than Taisen Hot Gimmick. All the girls are drawn by the insanely talented Jun Tsukasa, and their boobs are all jiggly and animated. Plus it's even got hidden characters from other Psikyo games, like the absurdly busty Koyori from Sengoku Blade. I thought that was a particularly bold move, it'd be like if Capcom made a strip mahjong game starring Chun-li.

I actually searched out online tutorials and taught myself how to play mahjong just so I could play Hot Gimmick. I discovered that mahjong sucks and I ended up using cheats just to get to the boobies. (I think I was able to get to the third opponent by playing legitimately.) Anyway, the original is the best, the girls in the second and third ones were drawn by various erotic artists, none of which, with respect, are as good as Tsukasa. I think there was a fourth one which hasn't been dumped yet and there was one released on the PS2 not long ago in which the boobies are not actually nekkid because Sony is anal about that sort of thing.

Regardless of the boobies, it's widely considered the best arcade mahjong game by people who care about mahjong, so I guess it's actually a good game.

Yeah, actually about 75% of the time I'm browsing the interweb. It baffles me too.

Ah, we share so much in common. It makes me tingle in a special way.

I wasn't aware Tetris had a theme with lyrics. What are they like?

"Blooocks! Blocks made up of smaller blocks!
Drop them in a line!
Wait for the long and slender one! Baby!
Slip it into a hole!
Rack up the bonus! Do do dum de dum!"

I'm a big fan of puzzle games, but not particularly of Puyo Puyo. My two favourites are the original Bust-A-Move/Puzzle Bobble and, like Zeta, Panel de Pon. I wish Nintendo would release Puzzle Collection here!

And of course, we know what our chances of that coming our way from Nintendo are.

Mmmh... the only puzzle game I have EVER played, and actually liked, was Puzzle Fighter, and that Sonic/Eggman Puyo-esque game.

And, since I'm in a good mood (then agian, maybe it's not correct to post such things in the forum... but, WTF), here's a link you'll porbably like: http://www.hentaiboobs.com ... then again, maybe you already knew about it... but, again, WTF!!!

Ah Puzzle Fighter. I used to be able to beat that game no sweat on hard mode at maximum-star difficulty. Now I'm lucky to clear Normal Mode at 1 star. :| I've gotten so rusty.

You know my body belongs to Popcorn. Try Del, she'll put her dick in anything it'll fit in.

Puzzle Fighter's also really good, probably my favorite next to Puyo. I suck at it, but it's good.
