How odd. I was on a bit of a classic arcade game binge for a while, including ol' Pengo himself whom I wouldn't've known of if not for this forum. Since MAME makes my laptop heat up like a dying star, I had to settle for the ports, all of which leave out Popcorn. :(
It's not like Pengo's actually that good. I certainly wouldn't award it "classic" certification.
I honestly don't even remember how I started using him, why I picked him of all things, or how he came to speak only in famous quotes. Does anyone remember how our Pengo mythos began? Because it's a total blank to me and it's driving me batshit trying to remember.
I think Sonic Team was somehow involved in some ports of Pengo to mobile phones or something, but for whatever reason he was prominently featured on their page as if he was their next big title. At the time I thought you were using him like that to demonstrate how important he was, like he was bigger than ShenMue or Skies of Arcadia or whatever other high profile Sega title he could say a funny line from out of context. Or maybe you just did it because he was a neglected Sega character, and the Pengo revival didn't happen until later?
The machine was all alone when I gave it a whirl. I played for about 10 minutes, during which time a few others joined in, but none for more than a round or two (granted, I wiped the floor with all of them).
Sno-Bees don't inflict damage, they only stun you momentarily. You can only "die" once per round: after being squished once, you become an angel, invulnerable to damage (but if you're an angel and catch a "live" Pengo, you get more points). Each round lasts about 30 seconds and the two players with the most points win while the rest of the players lose a life. Once they've lost 3 lives, they get a game over. Winners get to continue indefinitely. (The winning Pengos shake their butts victoriously at the losers - is that a new animation 'cause I don't remember it?)
I'm pretty sure everyone quit before they actually lost all their points (after 10 minutes I'd only lost one and was tired of playing, so I handed the game over to some kid who'd been watching).
So there you go. Bomberman it ain't and I'm going to wager this one isn't going into mass production. I JUST PLAYED A PART OF HISTORY SUCK IT
To be fair, everyone's attention seemed to be drawn to something on the 4th floor. There was a line all down the stairs and it looked like they were only letting two in at a time. Some big new game? I didn't see what it was...
"Ge-Sen Love Plus Pengo" is a collection of dumb looking action games and shooters and, most importantly, the long-overdue home port of whatever this game was called. Any takers? It's region free!
