Actually that was a functionally solid (if aesthetically bizarre) final boss fight. I think you could have cited far worse material to make your point.
That planet wisp stage for some reason seems a lot like Nights to me. It looks a little like Stick Canyon and sounds like a Nights game to boot. Level design looks. . . forgiving.

Taking, hell, the animations and camera angles are exactly the same. Hope that was an old build.

I'll give Dimps credit for sticking with one of the best special stage set-ups in the entire franchise.
I just wish the game as a whole didn't seem so aesthetically bland. They seem to be slapping together a perfectly serviceable tie-in game and just stopping there.

The special stage seems functionally solid, but also boring. At least it is not frustrating looking.
As for the last boss in Unleashed Wii, that is some of the worst crap I ever forced myself through, and I have walked through a field of cows.

He's sporting bracelets and anklets like his alt-skins from Brawl. I can be asked to see if it matches, though.
We're kinda feeling the effects of anti-ancillary character backlash that Sega apparently took to the logical extreme.

"Okay guys, we need some gimmicks for our newest Sonic game. Any ideas?"
"...How about giving it a science-fiction theme? People seem to like levels set in space."
"...In ...space. Okay, what else?"
"Maybe we could have power-ups of some kind. You know, expand how Sonic moves throughout stages."
"Good, good. Anythi-"
"HAVE EGGMAN CLONE SONIC! MAKE THE CLONE RED! GIVE THEM BOTH RADIO ANTENNAS! THEY'LL BE PSYCHICALLY-CONNECTED HEDGEHOG BROTHERS!"
"...I thought we let that guy go after the backlash from Unleashed ."
"We did. He was begging for change outside the office a minute ago."
"I DEMAND IT! I DEMAND HEDGEHOG BROTHERS WITH A PSYCHIC RADIO BOND!"
"Somebody give him a bagel and get him out of here."
"No, wait... That idea's so crazy, that it just might work... "
"..."
"..."
"..."
"YAY! BAGELS!"
So, I think it's multiplayer of some kind, but why isn't there a split-screen?

I'm thinking it's more of a Purple Comet-esque deal. Better than a ball of light, I suppose.
(A role better suited for Metal or a hoverbike-riding Fang)

But why would they even bother with a score input for the red hedgehog?
I was thinking it was a co-operative multiplayer, but given the speeds at which this game takes place, that's probably an impractical supposition.

I didn't see that; the image is cropped on my computer. Maybe you have to beat its ring score in addition to racing it?
EDIT: Maybe it's a time attack mode, and Red's the ghost.
Ahh, ahh, I've put way too much thought into this.

I meant ring and lives display, my bad. They're visible in the entire, uncropped screenshot.

Did anyone think about why the level is pure grey and only squares?

No. I'm pretty sure the level is not finished yet. Weren't there screen shots of Sonic Unleashed similar to this before it came out?

It could be that it's a simple racing track ala Let's Tap or something. Either that or a training stage. I dont think it's meant to be an actual stage. This close to release, I don't think an unfinished screen would pop up on Amazon (source).

Well, if it IS online co-op, the stage might have been made purposefully simple to try and...preserve bandwith or something? *shrug*

I think the sterile look is a perfectly acceptable design choice if handled right.
Whether you feel it works for Sonic to any degree, though...

I don't see why Greyscale Level is any less interesting than Food Level. If anything, the former interests me more (although my expectations are still fairly low).
Multiplayer could be fun though!

What is this, flame bait? I thought we were above that.
