This just in: teaser trailer made with no information about the product. News is cancelled, go home.

It was just a quick trailer to make an announcement for the DC's special day. It is not some sort of holy message about how to focus your lives.

Pay a company to create a video that will generate massive hype about a product we don't want anybody to know anything at all about yet (seemingly without clearly specifying to them that it actually exists) and challenge them to use their imaginations to get the job done. Yes. That is so how you advertise your company's products and build up PR and customer loyalty, by launching the paying customers into a secret shell game. And then not minding when the outfit you paid celebrates by telling the whole world about the plan, leaving nobody clear on what the hell's really going on.
The only smart thing this company did was fail to specify which branch of Sega approached them, though it's got to be Sega West because I kinda doubt the folks operating the mother ship in japan are this stupid. At any rate, has the Needlemouse teaser ever been posted up on Sonic Channel?
(How did this manage to sit in the open for four months without attracting attention? Wow.)

The Sonic Retro link doesn't seem to work, at least not for us groundlings without validation. Presumably you're talking about this. I suppose I should never have expected anything from a trailer as vacuous as that one.
If there's anything positive to be gained from this, it goes to show how passionate the fanbase is. There's still a palpable hunger for something great to come out of this fiasco, even with literally every sign suggesting otherwise. There's a market that's desperate for the game that this deserves to be. The "return of Sonic" is so close, and yet so far.

Re: All-new 2D Sonic rolling out in 2010
I think the big deal that's affecting a lot of people is that they were reading a lot into the trailer, thinking that there could be subtle clues inside. With this trailer now "non-canon", it means all we have is an interview, which, of course, is a lot more descriptive, though judging by some of his responses, he may not have been told everything, either.
The original post got discarded for causing undue drama and whining, so try here.Crisis wrote:The Sonic Retro link doesn't seem to work, at least not for us groundlings without validation. I wanted to say something here about the so-called "passion" leaning a lot closer to "immaturity", but then I read "the game that this deserves to be". Deserves? Really? Good grief. The bozos responsible succeeded in getting that market's hopes up alright!Crisis wrote:If there's anything positive to be gained from this, it goes to show how passionate the fanbase is. Re: All-new 2D Sonic rolling out in 2010
The trailer was released on Game Spot with a developer interview explaining the game, if I remember correctly. I think they are getting the exclusive information on the game as it comes out.FlashTHD wrote:Lawls, too late to tell Sonic Retro!Kogen wrote:It was just a quick trailer to make an announcement for the DC's special day. So maybe people should ignore a generic trailer that could be any Sonic game and instead try reading for 5 minutes? It really helps make everyone not seem as dumb as the folks at SONIC RETRO.

Well you could look at it that way, but it does make you a colossal cynic. Being able to get excited about something isn't an inherently bad thing, in this case it's pretty much all the franchise has left, the problem comes when it's manipulated by shady video game corporations and used to sell mediocrity.FlashTHD wrote:I wanted to say something here about the so-called "passion" leaning a lot closer to "immaturity"
Evocative language perhaps, but even purely from a marketing viewpoint (the most cynical of viewpoints), there is clearly a huge market for a great Sonic game and has been for years. SEGA are doing themselves an injustice by ignoring it and continuing to pump out swill. I felt the same way before the trailer, incidentally.FlashTHD wrote:Deserves? Really? Good grief. The problem is, what is the game that deserves to be? We hardly really know what game we're talking about here; right now the "game" is pretty much purely notional, and we have little idea what Sega's notion of it is.Crisis wrote:Evocative language perhaps, but even purely from a marketing viewpoint (the most cynical of viewpoints), there is clearly a huge market for a great Sonic game and has been for years. Re: All-new 2D Sonic rolling out in 2010
Here's where you're wrong. No one is being manipulated by shady video game corporations. The people that are still buying these games actually claim to enjoy them. Hell, we have people on this very forum who claim to have enjoyed Shadow the Hedgehog and even Sonic '06. Where is the corporate deception? Sega is doing nothing sinister or crafty here to somehow trick consumers into buying their product.Well you could look at it that way, but it does make you a colossal cynic. And the sonic community as a whole, is incorrigibly obnoxious. There's nothing to debate here. A simple skimming of any sonic related forum or news site will reveal vomit inducing levels of ignorance, naivete, and bad taste in general.
Not the GHZ though, no sir. With the exception of the aforementioned Sonic '06 sympathizer we're pretty much awesome.

Re: All-new 2D Sonic rolling out in 2010
Sega's blog has been updated with a character.
Basically, there's a picture with a list of potential playable characters and they're going to eliminate them to reveal the true playable characters. It's something I guess but it still looks like they're just trying to screw with fans at the moment.

Duh, since Tails and Knuckles aren't on the list. Those are the only names people stand a chance of genuinely being upset with if they're removed.
I kind of wish Sonic did get a new friend called Mr. Needlemouse who is to Sonic what Homsar is to Homestar Runner some bizarre, extra-dimesnional, possibly retarded Non Sequitur spouting poorly drawn clone of Sonic.

Like so:

"HeeheeEeeey everybody! It's time to run the doughnuts!"
"We am faster than anti-establishmentarianism!"
"I ate your father with a side of satellites and some mahogany!"

I don't know which is worse in building hype for a video game, announcements of an announcement(ex. "Square-Enix promises big news to come this summer!") or teaser games such as this and that Ryo deal with All Star Racing.

Re: All-new 2D Sonic rolling out in 2010
I hope someone hacks the blog every few hours and inserts 500 comments along the lines of "no thank you, I decline". Because if read their contest rules right, if enough people did not participate in this trivia bonanza, they wouldn't have to cross off a name or tell anybody anything. Yet of course they probably still would. Either way, that would be a riot.
To be fair that Ryo trailer was actual game footage and relatively honest hype-building. Not even in the leauge of this contest here, which is more or less stringing people along with mysterious "goodies" as prizes and forcing them to want to find out more about the game.Ngangbius wrote:I don't know which is worse in building hype for a video game, announcements of an announcement(ex. We could probably flood the site with wrong answers... if only we had a personal army.
This also has me trying to imagine a game with just Shade, Froggy, and Chip as playable characters.
Also, they only have 4 days lined up. Maybe with the bonus they'll eliminate more than one character each day.
I'd like the big Friday reveal to be some actual game footage, but I doubt it...

You play as Charmy and you have to fight the evil professor Hans Asperger.

Good news! Chip and Charmy are out.
In other news, you now have to have a Facebook account to submit an answer. Lame.
